Around SBN: Jerry Sandusky's Wife Tries To Run A Reporter Over

New Orleans: Backup Mark Brunell is a free agent and I’m not sure the Saints want to bring him back because of his age. Delhomme is no Drew Brees, but also is no Aaron Brooks. Delhomme is a guy who could fill in for a game or two because he’s smart and he also would fit nicely into any locker room. Plus, Delhomme is a Louisiana guy. He started his career in New Orleans. That would be a nice place for Delhomme to finish his career.

I'm not sure how likely this is. What do you think? Is Pat smoking crack again or could Jake actually return to the black and gold?

Personally

I would rather go after a development project rather than Delhomme.

For your information Viking's and Colt's fans, no matter how much you say it, you were not the better team in 2009.

How's he doing?

Maybe we’ll see in the preseason. No one seems to know if he is coming along or not.

If I remember right

Chase chose to sign on the Saints practice squad over the team he was released from because he wanted to be molded after Brees. There are alot of similarities between the two, and Chase has a year in the system. I would like to see how he unfolds in preseason. That being said, I think Jake may be a better veteran backup over Brunell. Perhaps let Brunell and Jake duke it out in training camp and pre-season for the #2, IF Chase doesn’t show he could be a capable #2 now that he has a year in the system.

There are alot of similarities between the two,

I don’t mean to be argumentative, but… well, Chase swells up with pride every time this gets mentioned. And Drew is too much of a gentleman to say anything.

Kinda agree

I’d like to see a younger developmental project acquired at QB, but if disaster ever happens and we lose our greatest ever player for a stretch, I’d rather have an experienced starter there to fill in as needed. I think Delhomme is slightly better than Brunell right now and could possible perform well in Payton’s system and with more WR and TE options than he has ever really had in Carolina.

we could keep them both

Saints carried both Brunell and Joey H for awhile.

Yeah, but...

Joey was Payton’s developmental project at the time. I think he likes to have both a veteran to back up Brees and a human piece of clay to mold into the QB he was never quite able to be. So far, he hasn’t been successful. Palko didn’t work out and neither did Harrington. Am I missing anyone? It seems like there was another at the beginning that I may have already forgotten. Anyway, I don’t see him carrying two seasoned veterans on the roster in Brunell and Delhomme. Brunell would have to go.

Or...

the two could battle it our in training camp and the loser goes home.

Didn’t Todd Bouman play in the 2006 preseason? Jamie Martin edged him out, but I have memories of him playing. Maybe that was just at the end of 2005 when Brooks was benched.

“It seems like there was another at the beginning that I may have already forgotten.”

Jason Fife, a former Arena League player, was Payton’s first pet project. He never took a snap in a preseason game, nor did he make it out of training camp. Jamie Martin backed up Brees that first season, after beating out Todd Bouman (Haslett era straggler) for the gig.

This is a guy I wouldn’t mind seeing them bring in. He was a highly touted prep quarterback at Massillon High School, which is like the Permian of Ohio. This before backing up Heisman Trophy winner Troy Smith at OSU. He was always considered to be the more NFL-ready of the two. Good size, arm strength and accuracy. He’s seemingly slipped through the cracks since going undrafted.

We could definitely do worse.

I think it’s about time for Brunell to call it a day, and Jake would be the right kind of guy to be a backup. Team player, good attitude, and he’s a “homeboy” which would count with the fan base.

I don’t see him being a starter anywhere that matters, so from his perspective, why not be a backup for his “home team”, and get a solid chance to see a SB ring in the process.

Not saying it will happen, but certainly could happen, and wouldn’t be a bad thing, IMO.

It's not as simple as releasing him and saying goodbye

rotoworld.com:

Jake Delhomme-QB- Panthers Mar. 5 – 11:44 am et
Following Thursday’s release, the Panthers still owe Jake Delhomme nearly $13 million in guarantees. Carolina has changed the face of its franchise, parting with the best quarterback in franchise history along with defensive MVP Julius Peppers. The organization reportedly has no qualms about the parting gift to Delhomme, a personal favorite of owner Jerry Richardson. GM Marty Hurney called the release the hardest decision he’s had to make while coach John Fox fought back tears at Friday’s press conference.
Sure, it’s not unusual for NFL teams to richly reward beloved star players after their usefulness is in decline. But that was a STUPID contract offer and the Panters management are idiot children.

I despised Rex because I perceived him as a backup trying to be a starter. Now that he’s a backup, I’m ok with him. He’s pretty good at times and pretty bad at others. Or am I thinking of Orton? I despise Orton because I perceive him to be a….

One Q:

If the Saints did manage to sign Jake Delhomme, would they have to eat that $16 million contract, or could they sign him for much less?

Other than that, I say go for it…since Jake would certainly be a better stop-gap backup than Brunell ever could be…and his Looziana heritage wouldn’t hurt, either.

At the very least, he’d have a far better O-line blocking for him than he had at Carolina.

from what I understand, and FiarBob can correct me if I’m wrong, when he’s releases from Carolina, his future contract is terminated, except the guaranteed money that Carolina owes him.

So, he could go somewhere else for a low salary knowing that he’s still getting paid by Carolina.

Towards the end of last year I thought Jake was losing his mind.

On the sidelines of the Saints game in the Dome, JD huddled with Fox and banging the back of one hand into the other with a 1,000 yard as if no one was listening. A couple of other displays like this happened.
IF the Saints are leaning that way, I hope before they weigh and x-ray him—they send him to Dr. Phil.

by CobraJet428 on Mar 5, 2010 1:54 PM CST reply actions

I think the only thing stopping Jake from coming BACK to N.O.

is why did he leave in the first place? If there is animosity there, on either side, that was the cause of his leaving, then he probably won’t be back. He’d be a much better fit as a backup than Brunell is, only cause of his age. But, since being a “short” successful starter…will he be willing to take a back seat for the next few years? I don’t see the Saints signing him as an eventual replacement for Drew 5 yrs. from now. Will his ego allow him to return to the backup roll full time?

WHO DAT!!! (sue me No Fun League)

my speculation is...

- there’s no animosity b/n Jake and the Saints. He left us for a starting job and a poop-can full of cash.

- I’m not sure it’s ‘ego’, but more of a desire to start and a belief that he still can.

- And, I agree, Jake is absolutely not the eventual replacement for Drew 5yrs from now.
