didn’t see this one coming. Not because I didn’t see Fujita leaving, but I didn’t expect him to leave to go to the Browns, and with Eric Man[not a]genius as coach.
I think this makes OLB as important as DT in the draft… I like Casilias, but I’m not completely sold on him
With the 32nd pick of the 2010 NFL Draft, the New Orleans Saints take... The suspense is killing me!

I guess that money does talk indeed.
So much for Fujita’s community efforts.
Probably only means that the Saints will have to go hard for an OLB in the draft, as well as a DE.
I’m assuming that because he was an UFA, the Saints get no compensation for him??
Anthony
If he plays well....
we may get a compensatory pick in 2011

I'm shocked and dismayed
And very disappointed. And saddened.

So am I.
I’m sad. I thought he was here for the long haul and he’d stay w/ the city.
"There’s no doubt in my mind that we can win a championship together," Brees said Friday inside the empty media room at the Saints’ headquarters. "Not only for the players and the organization, but for this city. Because no place deserves it more." Drew Brees
Could it be a reacton to the inaction on locking up Darren Sharper??
Or…simply a sign that Cleveland had just too good of an offer for him to pass up?
I'm honestly not surprised
It has nothing to do with Darren Sharper, but Sharper has done a pretty good job of whining that he hasn’t gotten a deal from the Saints that he thought he could take. I’m sure the Saints attempted to get a deal with Scott Fujita, but they just couldn’t come to an agreement. Fujita has certainly paid his dues as a player and he turns 31 this year. He already has a Super Bowl ring, so why not cash in on it? I’ll miss Scott Fujita out there, but I wish him the best in Cleveland.
And the eighth and final rule: if this is your first time at Fight Club, you have to fight.
“he turns 31 this year. He already has a Super Bowl ring, so why not cash in on it?”
Assuming he felt New Orleans wasn’t going to come up with a ballpark figure, I can’t really argue with that.
"I was not on the boat in question." -Darren Sharper
He could have at least taken it to them . . .
I appreciate what he’s done for the city, but he didn’t seem to make much of an effort to stay.

WOW!
Stu is upset, I can see. I’ve never seen him care so much about the tags. I’m shocked too. I’d rather have seen Fujita stay. It looks like the Browns really, really, really wanted him. For a 30 year old LB, I think they overpaid. Pay-Loo isn’t about to dish out that much, even though Fujita has been real solid and was Payton’s very first FA signing as head coach. Didn’t the Browns notice how many games he missed last year due to injury? I think they made Scott an offer he couldn’t refuse (like the Godfather) and the Saints weren’t willing to match it. Is Mike Holmgren the new Godfather?
Well, I’m saddened and dismayed, but I wish Scott the best. LB may have just become the Saints no. 1 need going into the draft. I’m also speculating that they may now be wanting to get younger at the position anyway. Let’s see what you got, Stanley Arnoux!

It's a business
In all honesty, I’m going to miss Fujita out there on defense. I’m going to miss him a lot more than I am Sharper, who has done some whining and butt kissing because he feels he’s worth more. I understand it’s a business, but I have more respect for Fujita than I do Sharper.
And the eighth and final rule: if this is your first time at Fight Club, you have to fight.
I'd rather keep Sharper . . .
. . . in my opinion, Fujita was the most expendable of the LBs. I hope that Sharper doesn’t jump ship, too.

I don't expect the Saints to keep everyone
But I do expect to hear about them making moves to retain our valuable players.
Screw this chess game, it’s time to get deals done before we lose other players like Fujita. Where the hell is Sharper’s contract? Pay the man and lets worry about our schedule next year, not who might or might not suit up.

Kudos to them. Fujita came to us when we were a struggling franchise and played a big role in bringing us a Superbowl. He should be a great leader in helping turn their franchise’s fortunes around as well.

So?
Does this go towards us signing a ufa? and if so how much do we have to play with? Wouldn’t it be around 5 mil?
And since we lost one free agent, will be able to sign only one free agent back, at or below that salary? or can we have multiple signings up to that salary totaled?
This really doesn't bother me.
We can do better at his position, and this will now force us to. He was a great guy, albeit a llittle to progressive for my taste, but I digress.
Let’s see what Stanely Arnoux brings to OTA’s and training camp. And the BPA at pick 32 in the draft might be a hard-hitting pass rushing OLB, which, lets admit, Fujita was not.
Now if Sharper signs elsewhere, I’ll be devastated.

I just think back to the three years of the Saints safety play prior to Sharper, and it makes me physically ill.
We went from the ABSOLUTE worst player in football, Josh Bullocks, to arguably the absolute best playmaker in football last year in Sharper. NINE interceptions! Are you kidding me!?
If he leaves, his instincts and leadership will be sorely missed. i want to see Jenkins move to safety, just not this year.
"They're ready to be like 'Same Old Saints'" - Roman Harper, on each of the New Orleans Saints vanquished foes of 2009
Bullocks isn’t anywhere close to the worst player in football. Even worst FS would be a a stretch. He’s near the bottom of the FS barrel though, I will give you that. All the more reason not to worry over Sharper. There are plenty degrees of usefulness and suckage between those two near-extremes.

Mangini team fines
There’s a new sheriff in town in Cleveland. Mangini now has to answer to Mike Holmgren. I think Mike will be mostly calling the shots there and Mangini will have to listen. I can’t see him creating a locker room mess like last year while Holmgren is in charge. With the way this league has teams going from worst to first so often, the Browns may actually become contenders. It may seem impossible, but you never know these days.

They aren't gone yet
We have to be prepared to see some of our players get offers that may lure them away. Winning the Super Bowl raises a players profile. They might as well get paid when they’re a hot commodity. It doesn’t last long.
They aren’t going to let Pierre get away. I’m confident they’d much rather match any offers he gets instead of letting him go for a 2nd round pick. Losing Fujita is a little surprising but losing Pierre would be heart-stopping shocking. I believe they’ll keep Sharper too. I don’t see a team breaking the bank for him at his age.

and just remember Fujita was an UFA (like Sharper - and my bet is that if he gets a deal he likes from a team he can tolerate, he's gone)
PT is a RFA, and the Saints have the right of first refusal on any offer sheet he signs. Fuj and Sharper are not/were not in the same situation as PT.
"In the end, the bread was in the pudding." Bobby McCray
Where does that come from?
PT already has been tendered. If someone does match we can still make a better offer or we get a compensatory draft pick. I like Fujita. But:

by Saints of Los Angeles on Mar 7, 2010 9:01 PM CST up reply actions
really???
Just because Fujita left for a huge contract that there was no way we were going to match doesn’t mean that we are dismantling our SB team!!! Sharper may get scooped up…. MAYBE, but with Ryan Clark signing with the Dolphins in the near future and the Giants paying Rolle way more than he is really worth, the pool for Sharper is getting quite shallow.
Do you guys really think someone is going to give up a 2nd rnder for PT??? I LOVE the guy as much, if not more than most of you. I think he is a damn good football player, and outside of Brees and maybe Jahri Evans, he’s the MVP of our offense. I. like all of you have watched every game this season, last season, and the season before. We watched him beat out Pittman, return KO and eventually work his way as an integral part of this offense. . HOWEVER, but what we see and what other teams see are different. Its so hard to judge our team. Refer to j.Duncan’s article which was posted by HansDat earlier ( http://www.nola.com/saints/index.ssf/2010/03/new_orleans_saints_offensive_p_1.html )
We KNOW that PT is worth a 2nd round pick, but other teams wouldn’t be as confident in that statement. A second round pick is extremely important to teams and they do not part with them lightly.
Other than PT, who else as far as core players are we going to lose??? Bushrod for a 2nd round pick? Yes, please! Roman Harper for a 1st round pick? Yes, please!!!! Let’s all step away from the ledge, put the knife down, flush those pills and take a deep breath… we are not breaking apart this team, just are going to make a few changes to the fringe.

Lose Harper? Really?
I’d much rather keep Harper than pick up another 1st rounder. I think Harper has become one of the better strong safeties in the league. He’s just now hitting his prime and seems to respond well to Gregg Williams’ system. I’d very much hate to lose him.

Personally, I'd rather keep him too...
but my point is that if we lost him, the team is not crumbling. If we lost him and got a first, we could pick up Taylor Mays, who is almost a carbon copy of Roman Harper.

Harper can be the first to go, in my book
He is good in run support, but a liability in coverage. Which makes him a dime-a-dozen.
For a FIRST ROUND PICK? In THIS YEAR’S DRAFT? We could only dream of being so fortunate!

Strong safeties are more about defending the run.
At least that’s my understanding. The free safety is more geared towards helping in pass coverage. I just watched the Super Bowl again yesterday and I remember Harper making more than a few big plays including batting down passes and key tackles. He’s a very good tackler. And I don’t see how that one TD pass to Garcon can be totally blamed on him either. Manning was just able to exploit the temporary absence of Greer on that play.
We could do a hell of lot worse at strong safety than Harper. I remember the Giants were reportedly interested in trading for him last offseason and PayLoo smartly declined. It would be a mistake to let him go now and I’m convinced it won’t happen. Williams loves him and Harper is just now hitting his prime.

Super Bowl or not, Benson is still a car salesman, so
you cannot expect him to spend big bucks retaining players. I would guess that he has given the GM and Payton a maximum dollar amount to spend. I’ll miss Fugita the person more than the player. At 31 with 8 million guaranteed, I’d have probably taken the money myself. Although I’m not happy about this, I am thankful for his contribution to the Saints and wish him well with his new team. Of course, not when they play us.

No linebacker is worth trading up in the first round for, imo.
"I was not on the boat in question." -Darren Sharper
I definitely think Sean Weatherspoon is worth trading up for.
Trade Jermon Bushrod & our 2nd rounder to the 49ers for the 17th pick overall. We take Sean Weatherspoon at 17 and a DE/DT at 32
The trade you’re proposing would dictate that Bushrod has the same trade value as the 27th overall pick in the draft. I think we’d be extremely fortunate to get another late 2nd round pick for of him.
"I was not on the boat in question." -Darren Sharper
But a team like San Fran, who has 2 first rounders, might be interested in a Super Bowl winning tackle
Why draft one who hasn’t played an NFL game when you can acquire one via trade and only give up one of your first rounders, a pick that you wanted to get a tackle out of, you see where i’m coming from? A lot of GM’s are interested in experience, Bushrod was our starting LT all year, he went through the whole 13-0 thing, played well against Jared Allen and Dwight Freeney, he has the veteran experience that he can bring to a young 49ers team, and Bushrod is still young. It’s a deal that can easily happen, I’d even give up Jammal Brown for the 17th overall pick, I just really want Sean Weatherspoon, he’d help us out immensely and would be a clear upgrade. Just my 2 cents
You seem to be overrating the value of winning a Super Bowl on a personal level. Granted, a player with championship experience is nice to have on your roster, but it doesn’t come anywhere close to overriding talent as an acquisition criterium. Bushrod isn’t starting NFL material at LT, regardless of how well he may have performed in a pinch. That’s like selling the farm to bring in Jeff Hostetler. Or whacking off to pictures of Antowain Smith. How did he work out as a Saint, btw?

I think more his problem is that he’s wanting his trade partner to be too stupid to realize they are handing us the keys to the bank vault.
Now trade partners that stupid ARE out there. Most years. Al Davis for one, if nothing else. But I wouldn’t expect it this year.
No the only thing I think is likely for offloading (if we even really want to) one of our OTs would be the Skins offering a SECOND rounder for one of them. And if they do offer it, we should take it. Both are reasonably decent, but an extra pick is worth it.

I agree, assuming you mean Bushrod or Brown (provided they sign Brown). Do you think Stinchcomb could be dealt for a late first rounder? He was a second rounder to begin with. He’s also healthy, already under contract and coming off a Pro Bowl season. I know no team is looking to spend a first rounder on a right tackle, but he’s played LT before and he’s a proven player. I personally think he’d land us the highest value in a trade now, being that Brown’s injury situation is still a concern. Not saying I’m crazy about a Brown-Bushrod tandem, but it isn’t really any worse than Bushrod-Stinchcomb this past season. And maybe that extra 1 or 2 goes toward upgrading the OTs even further. Or trade a second OT and the higher of the two top picks to move up even higher into the first round. With an extra OT (possibly two, if you’r upgrading) and a 1st rounder, there are several ways to make that happen. Like I’ve said before, throw Reggie into that mix and you may be talking Top 10 pick, with really not a whole lot lost, as compared to 2009.

That's very disappointing
Fujita was good with the Saints before Vilma arrived and then after Vilma ( and Sharper) etal we won a Super Bowl. I really liked the guy. Smart, tough and versatile. He can be replaced, my only concern is that we were in line to be very competitive next year and if we retool too many D players it could be tough. I think a lot of CSC people didn’t appreciate how good Fujita was.
Is Sharper gone yet?? Hopefully no.

Well… let’s see now. How many people did we retool last year? By my count we retooled four, and by the playoffs five. So far we’re only at one. Not the end of the world just yet.
Now if suddenly we have to retool eight, I’ll get a bit worried. For now, I just figure they have a plan to upgrade or at least replace.

A better title for this thread would have been ...
Saints to re-sign #55? FUJITABOUT IT!

And you thought stujo4 lashed out at me just before just for posting information...
imagine how bad it would have been with a title like that. Heck no!

Now that I think about it....
…if the Browns win the Super Bowl next year, Fujita has to get traded to the Lions.
In the immortal words of Socrates, "I drank what?"
Best of luck to you Scott.
Even if the Saints find a better player to fill your position, the city will still miss you.
So it wasn't a bad dream.
I woke up hoping it was. It’s not that I think Fuj is the best LB in the league. I just got too emotionally attached to the individuals on my team. So yeah, I’m crushed. It hurts. It sucks. I’ll move on eventually. But not today.
