Fuggitabout Shaun Rodgers, what about Dwan Edwards?
Shaun Rogers has had a lot of discipline and weight issues in his past. While I'm in favor of giving people extra chances whenever possible, giving up a draft pick for him (if he's even available at all, which might not be the case) seems unwise simply because we don't know which Shaun we'll get. We could get the motivated one that looks the same way Grant looked like maybe he was going to have a good year after GW came to town. Or we could get the 400 pound doughboy. Or anything in between. And after finally getting rid of Grant's horrid contract I'm a bit hesitant about risking going right back.
But we do need a good NT to team up next to our 3-technique DT rotation. And frankly I think that's far more important than a "major" upgrade at OLB. Just like a good pass rush makes the CBs look better, a good DL makes the LBs look better. So why not look at Dwan Edwards? True he's coming from a 3-4 NT position, but while the scheme is different the role he's being asked to fill is very similar. He's strong and has been a great backup player for the Ravens for some years now. He's very likely looking for more money than Scott Fujita has freed up for us under the Final Eight Plan, but sometimes the right fit can make things work out anyway even when the money isn't "perfect". Coming from an aggressive and boisterous DC like Rex Ryan (one year removed perhaps, but still a huge part of his history) he might well fall in love with Gregg Williams at first sight.
Since nobody else has managed to sign him yet despite at least two FA visits, why don't we at least give him a call?

rotoworld.com on Dwan Edwards:
He is not much of a pressure player, though.

Yeah, but isn’t that where Sed could come into his own?
This is why I suggest considering him for our NT. As a run stopper and double-team-drawer he would free up Sed, Smith, and McCray/Hargrove/Whoever to face more single teams and hopefully make more plays.
At least in theory… :)

But would he take the double teams?
Or would other teams double-team Ellis, figuring that Edwards couldn’t generate the pressure one-on-one that Ellis can?
I don’t know, I’m just asking.

I don’t either. That’s part of why I said in theory.
Then again, in a 3-4, if you are playing NT and you AREN’T drawing double teams, your butt is on its way out in about three seconds flat. He got to keep playing quite a bit, and it wasn’t like the Ravens had nobody else to use at the position. So that means either he still gets at least SOME attention and just doesn’t get the stats because of the scheme of the 3-4, or something VERY weird is going on here…

he seems...
A little small for the NT (290 lbs), but I’ve heard good things about him. Any help at the DT rotation would be great and I am in favor of.
With the 32nd pick of the 2010 NFL Draft, the New Orleans Saints take... The suspense is killing me!
Teams may be hesitant to hand Edwards the money he’s looking for because of a spinal fusion surgery he underwent in 2008.
Mangini. Mangini. Mangini. MANGINI.

I noticed that. Which may well mean that he has to choose between several low-ball offers, and having a DC similar to the guy he was used to before just might be a tipping point.
