New Orleans Saints Mock Draft Database
It is time now for me to unveil our official New Orleans Saints mock draft database. Like last year, I have scoured the internet searching for every single respectable mock draft I could possibly find to see which player each has chosen for the Saints. I have collected them all here and compiled them into a handy-dandy, sortable table for your constant referral. The goal is to get a clear picture of which player the expert and not-so-expert draft analysts think the Saints will inevitably choose in the first round, as well as take note of any interesting trends.
After eliminating any mock created before April 1st (excluding a few mocks, most from the SB Nation family) we're left with forty-one total mock drafts in our database. After analyzing the findings, the conclusion...is that we can't really draw a conclusion.
Unlike last year when Malcolm Jenkins and Vontae Davis were the clear favorites and comprised most of the mock draft selections, there really aren't any runaways this year. 74% of the total mock selections are spread among four different prospects who play three different positions among them and each separated by just one mock draft. No real consensus. The only thing they all agree on is that the Saints still, after all these years, need to draft defense. Except these guys, who have the Saints going with wide receiver Golden Tate. I'll take a hit of whatever they're smoking.
So who was the most popular choice for the Saints? Surprisingly, to me anyway, it was Brian Price, defensive tackle out of UCLA. The other three popular choices were Everson Griffen, Sean Weatherspoon and Carlos Dunlap. Check out the full breakdown:
| Player | Position | College | # of Votes | % of Votes |
| Brian Price | DT | UCLA | 9 | 22% |
| Everson Griffen | DE | USC | 8 | 20% |
| Sean Weatherspoon | OLB | Missouri | 7 | 17% |
| Carlos Dunlap | DE | Florida | 6 | 15% |
| Jared Odrick | DT | Penn State | 2 | 5% |
| Jerry Hughes | OLB | TCU | 2 | 5% |
| Brandon Graham | DE | Michigan | 1 | <3% |
| Dan Williams | DT | Tennessee | 1 | <3% |
| Derrick Morgan | DE | Georgia Tech | 1 | <3% |
| Darryl Washington | OLB | TCU | 1 | <3% |
| Bruce Carter | OLB | North Carolina | 1 | <3% |
| Taylor Mays | S | USC | 1 | <3% |
| Matt Tennant | C | Boston College | 1 | <3% |
Of all the positions, defensive end was the most popular. However, most of those choices (69%) were made on or before April 7th, when the Saints acquired former Bears defensive end Alex Brown.
| Position | Total Picks | Percentage |
| Defensive End | 16 | 39% |
| Defensive Tackle | 12 | 29% |
| Outside Linebacker | 11 | 27% |
| Safety | 1 | <3% |
| Center | 1 | <3% |

i like the idea of price
although no one here talks about him…he’s one of those guys that could be taken in the mid-first rd. but might drop to us…imagine him and ellis for the next 6 years! a good young group of DT’s…it’d be something fierce yo
Price was my mock pick on Saints Nation
I think the Saints will go DT to get a starter alongside Ellis
Dumber drafting Tebow or another wide....?? Probably the latter but....
From the guru picking a wide receiver @ 32…
And besides, I’ve seen crazier — Charles Davis has them taking Tim Tebow. Come on.
That is hilarious Dave…

The only thing they all agree on is that the Saints still, after all these years, need to draft defense. Except these guys, who have the Saints going with wide receiver Golden Tate. I’ll take a hit of whatever they’re smoking.
I wouldn’t recommend that… sounds like something that could cause permanent brain damage.
Pigs have flown! Hell has frozen over! The Saints HAVE WON the Superbowl!!
+1 Thanks for taking the time to do this.
Yeah, the Golden Tate pick was by someone totally unfamiliar with our team. At least it’s not as insanely crazy as Charles Davis predicting we’ll take Tebow with no. 32. I’ll be glad when draft day finally gets here so the speculation will be over with and everyone can move on to ridiculing and criticizing whoever Al Davis drafts this year. That’s become a yearly tradition. It sucks to be a Raider fan these days.

I honestly wouldn’t rule out Tate. I don’t view WR as a need, but he could easily be considered the BPA at 32.
"I was not on the boat in question." -Darren Sharper
No way Tate should be considered BPA at 32…he’s a mid round 2 selection. Besides when you draft BPA you generally lump 2-3 guys together that you have almost equal and generally give a decision that’s at least partially based on need. The only exception is if you’re sitting on a guy who’s clearly leaps and bounds better than the others available. That’s why you never see people drafting a first round TE 3 years in a row because BPA…is never actually truly the best player available.
“That’s why you never see people drafting a first round TE 3 years in a row because BPA”
Being that most teams only start one TE, I don’t know if that’s the best of examples. You could have just as easily said “that’s why the Lions don’t have a QB rotation of Leinart, Flacco and Stafford.” I agree that need is always taken into consideration when players grade out closely, but who really knows how highly the Saints have Tate graded? I’ve seen him go as high as 14th overall on mocks. Just saying Loomis has surprised me before. I didn’t expect McAllister in 2001 and sure as hell didn’t think they’d trade up not once, but twice for DTs.
"I was not on the boat in question." -Darren Sharper
I’m kinda surprised no one has us taking Pouncey. He probably has about as much chance of being there at 32 as Weatherspoon does and I see Tennant somehow creeped into the bottom of the 1st, at least once.

BTW
I am starting to like your pick of Hughes lately CP
by jeremysherwin on Apr 12, 2010 10:43 AM CDT up reply actions
I like that he could regularly start at WLB in both schemes and still help out at RDE in a pinch. That could prove to be Hughes huge, if Will Smith’s possible suspension rears its ugly head again.
"I was not on the boat in question." -Darren Sharper
Not sure how effective he’d be as a WLB in the 4-3, but I don’t see how he could possibly be any more vanilla than Fujita was.
"I was not on the boat in question." -Darren Sharper
on Norwood
What do you think his first season impact could be? A lot of stuff I’ve read indicates he’d be better off at RDE to begin with.
Those two are about the same, imo. 40 times aside, Norwood plays faster and has faced better LTs. If they happen to go Price or Williams — i.e., address neither OLB nor DE — at 32, I’ll be crossing my fingers for Norwood on Friday.
"I was not on the boat in question." -Darren Sharper
Good size, good speed, could definitely be there in round 2 as a possibility. I don’t think he’s very instinctive though, he seems to get caught out of position a lot at times. I’m hoping though that with his size and speed, he can take to Williams’ coaching and flat out attack. Also looks like we’re courting Wilkerson from Tampa Bay, nother big body DE. Leaning to think it’s definitely DT/OLB in rounds 1-2, just a matter of which one in which round. Of course conventional thinking generally winds up with a lot of people scratching their head come draft day.
Although
I would really like to see the saints trade up for Odrick if the price is right
by jeremysherwin on Apr 12, 2010 12:19 PM CDT up reply actions
thats why i like the idea of jumping up for Odrick
He can play DE and DT. Covering for the proable 4 game suspension, that Big Willie might get, along with adding depth to the DT position.

Pouncey good. He’d be a beast no doubt about it…but when you’re sitting with 4 probowlers on the offensive line, one of which is looking down the gun of a tremendous payday in Evans, can you really afford to look at G/C in round 1? I’ll never disagree with picking a premiere offensive lineman, however, although it appears Payton and the Loomey one prefer finding gem type interior linemen later in the draft.
Chris Cook is visiting the Saints today
Source
Any chance they could be looking at a CB and planning to move Malcom Jenkins to FS? Projections on where Cook will be drafted are all over the place, but it seems he may be one of those guys that is not good enough for us to draft in the 1st round, but will probably be gone by the time we draft in the 2nd. Discuss amongst yourselves.

I am all in
Let’s call it “Sharper’s insurance”..
"Saints don't commit sins, they exorcise demons. The NFL most accurate passer was preaching, and the league MVP watched as the Game MVP delivered an impressive sermon"
Scout.com ranks him the 7th best CB, 5 stars out of 5, 56th overall (bottom of the 2nd round).
Gil Brandt on NFL.com puts him 3rd round, 71-80 overall. He was a top performer in the combine in the 40 and broad jump. But…
Cook only possesses average speed and probably isn’t suited to play on an island. Does not have the necessary lateral quickness to shadow sharp route runners at the next level and likely won’t be overly effective in man-heavy coverage schemes.
Does GDub have time to work with this?
I'm sick and tired of hearing things from uptight, short-sighted, narrow-minded hypocritics.
The NFPost article says a “league source” expects him to go between the 20th and 40th picks, which does seem pretty high.
CBS Sports has him rated as the 47th overall player and a 2nd round pick. Like I said, the projections are all over the place with this guy. Their analysis on his man coverage abilities:
Man Coverage: Good hands for press coverage. Provides a stout initial pop and has the flexibility to turn and run with receivers. Strong, active hands to keep the receiver close throughout the early route. Doesn’t have the flexibility and quick feet to mirror receivers, but is faster than he looks and is able to cheat back to the ball.
The more I look at him, the more I start to think he could be the one getting moved to FS in our system instead of Jenkins. 6-2 is really tall to play CB and is probably the cause for any agility issues scouts are seeing in him, but that would be the perfect height for a FS. A few sites I went to actually praised his speed as one reason he might make a good CB. These conflicting reports from different websites make this whole process a pain. Can’t we just get the draft done already?
"I want to hand this trophy to the MVP of the Super Bowl -- and the MVP of the entire league.''
-- Saints coach Sean Payton, handing the Vince Lombardi Trophy to Drew Brees after Super Bowl 44.
Unless a guy is a concrete talent, i don’t see how you could ever justify spending a high pick (read as first or second round) for a guy to play a position he has never played before. The league is plagued by players who simply could not make the transition. There’s a reason why Payton has not moved Jenkins to FS but was willing to try that with Young (a player who’s been around a few more years and has obviously not panned out well at corner). We’re 3 starting corners deep, which is right where we need to be. We have Young and Chip Vaughn on the roster at FS. Either draft a true safety, or reach for a conversion at a later round. I’d rather keep Jenkins as our third corner despite his salary, especially considering the proliferation of 3-4 WR sets these days in the NFL. He’s also big enough that you can put him on the pure pass catching TEs and not have a huge size matchup issue.
You, sir, are going to be REQUIRED to call in during the season to Ralph and Dave’s little radio show and fill all the dead air (after Kevin gives it a rest). CP ought to do it, but he’s very modest, if you know what I mean.
I'm likin' that Hughes kid.
I’d love to….but a two hour time difference and not getting that radio station would probably limit my capabilities.
it's on blogtalkradio.com
Dave posts the link here an hour or so before each show. I don’t think there’s been a show since just after the Superbowl.

I’m not in the mood.
I wouldn't mind getting half the "love" that the Saints are willing to give Sharper...
“We have Young and Chip Vaughn on the roster at FS”
Vaughn’s a SS … the only true SS we currently have on the roster, I should add. Neither Harper nor Reis have signed their tenders. Prioleau is a floater, though better suited for SS + valuable special teamer (basically an African-American version of Reis). I’m not terribly comfortable with either position, FS in particular.
"I was not on the boat in question." -Darren Sharper
One of the things we can't allow ourselves to be trapped in
is saying which DL works best in a 3-4 versus a 4-3. Considering the fact GW runs both along with a hybrid 3-3-5. To look forward to getting a DT to line up next to Sed is somewhat foolish, somewhat. I mean, how often will we line up as a true 4-3 defense. GW did his usual mind games last year when he started out with vanilla schemes and added to the complexity week by week. He even held things back for the playoffs. Look at the Super Bowl where he had separate schemes for first half, then third quarter, then another for the fourth quarter. If we’re looking for draft prospects for the front seven, we need versatile players who can play different positions. Discussion is open.
Price
BRING HIM IN! This guy is a terror, and with he and Sed in the middle, I’d say that it has potential to be one of the best DT tandems in the league.
I wouldn't mind getting half the "love" that the Saints are willing to give Sharper...
Liking the Price pick a lot more these days...
Though I am definitely liking the Brian Price pick a lot more these days, I am starting to think more and more as we get closer to the actual real draft itself that some other team desperate for a QB (who can be molded into a starter sooner rather than later) will agree to trade with us at #32 and give us a 2nd rounder plus for the opportunity of them taking a Tebow or a McCoy at the end of day one.
I’d love for the Saints to trade down, but I know if I’m up until 11:00pm on Thursday night watching the draft and they suddenly don’t pick until Friday night, I’m going to be gritting my teeth. If it’s a last minute deal … I hope it’s for exceptional compensation. Like a 2nd or 3rd and a starter. I’ll leave it at that.
"I was not on the boat in question." -Darren Sharper
That could make Charles Davis' prediction of Tebow going in the 1st round correct...
Think about it though, that could make Charles Davis’ prediction of Tebow going in the 1st round correct (although it wouldn’t be the Saints picking him then – that was about the stupidest thing I have ever heard from a paid NFL analyst, ever!)…
I also think the Saints could still trade Bushrod or Brown for draft picks yet...
What would y’all think about getting another 2nd and a 4th, or something like that, for Jermon Bushrod right before the draft?
I would think if someone was willing to give up a 2nd for Bushrod they would have signed him away on tender. The fact that that didn’t happens…leads me to believe nobody is willing to give up more than a third for him. There’s no way we trade Brown…he may be coming off an injury, but he’s a true star left tackle. You just don’t give those away.
Why not trade Brown? Bushrod already proved we can win a SB without him, right?
I wouldn’t ever go as far as to say there is “no way” we trade anybody on the roster (except Brees, that is) in this day and age…
Fact is if you trade away Brown you’re more than obligated to use a draft pick (Probably a top 3-rounder) to start grooming. Bushrod did ok at times, needed HUGE help at others. You trade away Bushrod…not so much. We have Strief, a more than capable backup. We can take some later fliers for depth. You trade a top 10 tackle like Brown….better be getting at least a 1 for him and change.
There are at least a few teams out there who want/need a starting OT...
…and one of them could be willing to trade a 1st round pick for that kind of a stud at OT (Brown). Tell me I’m wrong about that!
No you’re very right about that. I’m just saying what’s the point of trading Brown for a 1st round pick, if you then have to feel obliged to use that pick on a tackle replacement. Just doesn’t make too much sense for me.
You don't "have to feel obliged to use that pick on a tackle"...
…is my further point on this matter. We still have Bushrod and Strief (who is barely even a step behind Bushrod, if that, in my book) so you’re solid at the position for at least another year, is the way I am seeing it. Next year’s draft is another matter altogether for that position, however, if you lose Brown for sure…
1. I honestly don’t think we’d get a first round pick for Brown.
2. If we could, I’d have no problem rolling the dice on another LT. I’m just not pleased with Brown’s progress over three entire seasons at the position.
3. If Bushrod + Strief is your definition of a one year Band-Aid, thanks but no thanks, I’m hanging on to Brown. Any first round worthy LT at least has a chance of being a step in the right direction. With those two, you’re stepping backwards.
4. Even if we were guaranteed a Top 5 pick next season — i.e., a can’t-miss franchise LT — I wouldn’t want to risk Drew’s career playing behind a makeshift OL again. The impetus for my wanting another LT is based primarily on lead run blocking. Brown’s an exceptional pass blocker. As much as I knock his overall game, I won’t take that from him.
"I was not on the boat in question." -Darren Sharper
You and I may not view Brown in the same light. Ideally, I’d like to trade Stinchcomb, shift Brown back over to the right side and draft a true franchise LT. Obviously, we won’t be in a position to do that this year … on top of which, Brown’s never going to settle for RT money, when he’s made the Pro Bowl twice at LT … so they’re probably going about it the right way with the one-year tender + play it by ear. If we could somehow propel ourselves into the middle of the first, I’d be all for getting it over with. I just don’t see that happening. I do agree with you in that Brown’s not someone you just pawn off to the highest bidder, regardless of compensation level. While not elite (imo) he’s our best OT and I’m sure he fits SOMEONE’S definition of the cat’s pajamas, even coming off a season-ending injury. I’m also not anywhere near comfortable with Bushrod starting at LT for another entire season. I want improvement at that position badly … I just think I’m beating a hollow drum this particular season, based on our draft position.
"I was not on the boat in question." -Darren Sharper
Gonna keep doing this for anyone who looks,
Mel Kiper’s 4 round mock is Insider only but here’s what he says about the Saints:
Top team needs : DE, OLB, DT, FS, RB, C/G
Round 1 (32) : Jerry Hughes OLB/DE
Round 2 (64) : Mike Neal DT
Round 3 (95) : Darrell Stuckey S
Round 4 (130) : Antony Dixon RB
Summary : Hughes will be considered by some to be a better fit as an OLB in a 3-4. This is a player that piled up 26.5 sacks in the past 2 seasons at TCU, and he has outstanding athleticism. Neal plays with great leverage and is a run-stuffing tackle. The Saints should get a safety somewhere in the 1st 4 rounds given the uncertainty at that position, and Dixon is insurance in the backfield as a physical back.
