On Twitter he says:
Guessing – 4th/5th rd. RBs (baggage, too) don’t bring value
This is the same guy who said Vick would avoid jail time, though. Both Yahoo and ESPN suggest the Bills want a second round pick for Lynch, though both also suggest this is too high a demand, given that he’s a misdemeanor away from a long suspension.
It was Twitter I got it from
A 5th rounder’s worth a flyer on that kind of a monster back, no? Issues or no issues.
These guys are FAMILY. They are known quantities. The guys who peed in the parking lot? Gone the next day or so. Terminated with extreme prejudice.
Marshawn Lynch, Michael Vick, and all the others are somebody else’s problem. The Saints are the world champions. Why would they cruise the gutter looking for talent? Tim Tebow types ought to be begging for a PayLoo interview.

Casillas and Nicks weren’t family when they were arrested. So, what you’re saying is, had Lynch already been a Saint when he smoked weed — which is ten times worse than beating you wife, btw — you wouldn’t have a problem with him? I personally have an issue with looking in the gutter or anywhere else for talent, as long as the talent outweighs the compensation. That was certainly the case with Casillas as an undrafted free agent and I would have to think it would be for a 5th, a round they’ve struck out in nearly as often as they haven’t. Rob Ninkovich, David Jones, DeMario Pressley, Carl Nicks, Thomas Morestead. That’s about as hit-or-miss as you’re going to get. Not that we have a 5th to work with, just speaking hypothetically. Worst case scenario, he gets caught with a bong and you wind up keeping the Thomas/Hamilton camp body du jour as our RB4. Gosh, what a crushing blow to our chances of repeating.

And yet, about Hargrove you said:
I don’t think he’s a disposable player … that’s just the point where I’d consider replacing him the wiser option, ALL THINGS considered.
So you’d dump Hargrove, but would have no issue taking on Lynch, his off field troubles, his probable 4 game suspension in 2010, his 2009 3.75 yard rushing average, and his locker room poison?
as long as the talent outweighs the compensation.
2010: $885,000, 2011: $1.14 million, 2012: $1.14 million (Voidable Year), 2013: Free Agent
Have at it. I wouldn’t do it. And I predict the Saints won’t do it, and won’t even seriously consider it.

Hargrove for a 3rd round pick
I also don’t understand the common conventional wisdom of trading a known quantity for an unknown quantity. Hargrove for a 3rd round pick, for example.
The decision maker must have a really high opinion of their player evaluation process.
All I can think of is this 11th pick in the 4th round who was cut in camp because they realized that he sucked so badly.

Even as an underachiever, Lynch would be among our top three RBs, in terms of career production. He’d also represent a marked improvement over Bell. I’d personally rather a bigger back, but he does run hard and it’s hard to imagine landing a more talented back that late. While the talent pool at the position is deep, guys like Thomas and Ryan Grant are pretty much anomalies. If we had a 5th to spare, I can’t see how it wouldn’t be worth the risk, even with his off-the-field behavior taken into account.
Thomas 415 career touches, 2407 yds from scrimmage = 5.80 yards per touch
Bush 748 career touches, 3874 yds from scrimmage = 5.18 yards per touch
Lynch 743 career touches, 3264 yds from scrimmage = 4.39 yards per touch
Hamilton 40 career touches, 173 yds from scrimmage = 4.33
Bell 374 career touches, 1567 yds from scrimmage = 4.19 yards per touch
