All-Time Greatest Saints Rookie

With the season still a bit away and the draft behind us, I decided to look up some of our great rookies that the Saints have had.  I'm not to big on knowledge of the older players (80's and older) but here's a list of some of the best rookies I think we've had. If you have more, feel free to add in the comments section, as I will not be able to add everyone's favorites.

Star-divide

Since the Saints first became a team until now we've had 509 total draft picks, 44 first round draft picks, and who knows how many undrafted free agents. Here's a few that had exceptional rookie seasons: (in reverse chronological order)

1. Marques Colston 2006-

Colston was definitely a pleasent surprise as a rookie, a 7th rounder out of Hofstra (who doesn't even have a football program anymore) Colston set an NFL record for most receptions in a player's first two seasons with 168. He helped lead us to the playoffs in 2006, and almost to the Super Bowl.

2. Reggie Bush 2006-

Reggie has been quite a question mark so far in his career, but he's definitely one of the most exciting players we've ever had and his rookie season, in my opinion, has been his best stats-wise, he had 155 rushes for 565 yards with his career high 6 rushing TD's to go along with 742 receiving yards and 2 TD's. He also had 1 punt return for a TD. His rookie year was also his healthiest year playing all 16 games.

3. Darren Howard 2000-

Darren Howard came in from Kansas State in the 2nd round, he ended up with 11 sacks as a rookie which is quite a feat. I liked Howard when we had him and was sad to see him go.

4. Willie Roaf 1993-

It's hard to look back at Big Dubs first year, they're aren't many stats the O-linemen can get, but he did start all 16 games his rookie season and actually started in every NFL game he ever played in after that. Roaf is one of the all-time great Saints and should be in the HOF one day.

5. George Rogers 1981-

Goin back to a time before I was born for this one, I think he was our first and last 1st overall pick in the draft. His rookie season he rushed for almost 1700 yards and 13 TD's, He won Rookie of the year that year, and also went to the Pro Bowl.

That's all I've got for now...if anyone has anymore, like I said throw em down below and I'll try to get a poll going to see what the consensus is. Let's see if any of our rookies this year can live up to the few..the proud...the best Saints rookies!

(and like I said just because I didn't include anyone doesnt mean I meant to leave them out, just don't have time to put everyone in yet and just scanned through a list of players and picked a couple. I know Rickey Jackson and other players should be on here, but that's where you come in. List away my fellow Who Dats!)

Maybe not "All-Time Greats" - But a few that stood out from my early fandom...

.
Robert Massey CB – 1989 – 5 INTs before getting hurt in his 2nd year… got traded to the Cardinals and went to a Pro Bowl.

Tyrone Hughes CB/KR – 1993 – 1250+ Return Yards and 3 TDs. Finally somebody to help erase the memory of Mel Gray.

Sammy Knight S – 1998 – 5 Interceptions, 5 PDef

RBs Mario Bates and Vaughn Dunbar both put up 700+ yards rushing as Rookies in the early 90s… Bates had 6 TDs.

It's an ankle bracelet, not a halo....

Rogers

…but why no love for Rueben Mayes? He deserves a mention, at least.

Agreed. Mayes led the team in rushing and was named to the Pro Bowl as a rookie. That while splitting carries with fellow rookie Dalton Hilliard.

1353 rushing yards as a rookie

Mayes should be on the list.

+1000

Mayes was the first one that came to mind for me. He ended up getting injured (Achilles, I think) and that slowed his career down considerably.

my top choice is also George Rogers RB, South Carolina as New Orleans Saints all-time best rookie

For sure. Brought us out of the dark ages.

Cam Cleeland had a stellar rookie season, as did Jammal Brown at RT. Donte Stallworth still holds the NFL record for most consecutive games with at least one TD pass to start a career (4). Willie Roaf and Rickey Jackson both started all 16 games as rookies.

3 more...

Pat Swilling and Steve Trapilo: mid-round picks and key cogs on Mora’s teams that brought the franchise out of eternal suck

Lorenzo Neal – if I’m not mistaken, I think he was leading the league in rushing before getting hurt his rookie year.

oops

right you are CP. Still a great draft pick, but not such a great rookie year. I guess I was thinking about his 87 season (his second year)

Jahri Evans

won the starting job at RG his rookie season and has evolved into arguably the best OG in the game. Just shows how good that ’06 draft class was.

Peyton, I can eat Oreos faster than you!!!!

LeCharles Bentley in roughly the same vein. Started 14 games as a rookie at RG, made the Pro Bowl the following year.

Here's hoping

Evans has the better career since LeCharles completely fell off the map after he was traded. Of course that was mainly due to injury, but still.

Rogers by far

Still cry over the whole thing with him going to the Redskins…but please don’t judge me as i’m overly sensitive. After that Roaf then Mayes.

Please try to be a little more sensitive when speaking of Russell.

“Back in the day” he became clinically depressed after missing so many field goals, and he tried to shoot himself in the head. Missed, of course.

he said that he tried to shoot himself but the bullet got intercepted

All in all

I am a little surprised Morestead wasn’t invited to be on the list. If we are talking about rookies, then shouldn’t the rookie season be the measuring point? If not, than this post is a slightly different way of phrasing an “All Time Greatest Player” post that only encompasses players that joined the Saints as a rookie.

everybody was all over themselves about Hugh Green. History is on my side, Jackson was the man. Another player had he played on a championship team would have been considered the greatest that ever played the game. It’s a fact Jack—————son.
