A message from Central Services about power rankings

Hi, there. I want to talk to you about ducts. Or power rankings, maybe. You'd rather talk about power rankings? Okay.

Mostly, they don't mean anything...you know that, right? But it's still nice to see that a team can struggle through four decades of futility, finally rise to capture a championship, and the rest of the country will cut it some slack, give it the benefit of the doubt, say, "Oh, all right...we'll give you the number one spot until somebody else takes it from you. You've earned it, you big lug."

Yeah, that would be nice. The other school of thought is, "Let them disrespect us. Gives us motivation. We fly under the radar. And it's all the sweeter when we make Bucky Brooks cry like a Vikings fan." Still, it would be nice if all these wrong-wing extremists would listen to simple reason once in awhile.

Obviously, I've been thinking about power rankings recently; so I used this new Google thing (amazing technology, by the way, though kinda evil) to find out what the rest of the country has been thinking. Turns out a lot of other folks have been thinking along the same lines. So what do the various "experts" have to say on this subject? I'm glad you asked. Here are 15 different power rankings, with the Saints' rank, as compared to...oh, let's randomly choose the Indianapolis Colts and Minnesota Vikings for comparative purposes. Plus comments, where available.

ESPN
Saints' rank: 1 (Colts 2 • Vikings 3)
"Losing FS Darren Sharper to free agency would be a big blow to the Super Bowl champs." [My guess is that ESPN doesn't put much emphasis on fresh content.]

Fox Sports
Saints' rank: 1 (Colts 2 • Vikings 3)
"All right, you finally got off the schneid. Now can you do it again? At first glance, a strong foundation is in place for another title run with solid youth in key spots and plenty of weapons for Drew Brees to target."

WhatIfSports
Saints' rank: 2 (Colts 2 • Vikings 5)

Sports Illustrated, Peter King
Saints' rank: 5 (Colts 4 • Vikings 13 • Packers ranked 1)
"All right, you finally got off the schneid. Now can you do it again? At first glance, a strong foundation is in place for another title run with solid youth in key spots and plenty of weapons for Drew Brees to target."

CBS Sports
Saints' rank: 1 (Colts 2 • Vikings 6)
"They've added some solid players on defense, which they had to do. The offense will continue to play at a high level. But will they have a hangover? Or is that even a good word to use?"

Sporting News
Saints' rank: 4 (Colts 1 • Vikings 10)
Sporting News did something interesting: they ranked the teams, and allowed GMs to comment on the rankings. Here's what Mickey Loomis had to say: "No. 4? How come we're not No. 1? We've got a good group of core players, a great coaching staff. I think our window of opportunity is going to last at least as long as Drew Brees is our quarterback."

WalterFootball
Saints' rank: 2 (Colts 1 • Vikings 6)
"I'm moving the Saints down a spot only because Drew Brees is on the cover of Madden 11. Why was he so happy in that commercial when he found out he would be the cover boy? I would have freaked out, punched my agent and jumped out of the building to elude the Madden Curse." [That Walter. Such a kidder. But all this does is demonstrate how tenuous is the hold of either the Saints or the Colts on the top spot.)

NFL.com
Finally, the "official" power rankings. ("When all you want is power rankings, go to the NFL.") Seven experts, plus the fan community, weighed in on the matter, and this is how it all broke down:

Expert Ranking Notes
Gil Brandt 1 (Colts 2 • Vikings 4)
Bucky Brooks 9 (Colts 2 • Vikings 6 • Cowboys ranked 1)
Vic Carucci 5 (Colts 1 • Vikings 2)
Pat Kirwin 1 (Colts 3 • Vikings 2)
Jason LaCanfora 1 (Colts 2 • Vikings 10)
Steve Wyche 4 (Colts 9 • Vikings 6 • Cowboys rated 1)
Joe Theisman 2 (Colts 3 • Vikings 4 • Packers rated 1)
Fans 1 (Colts 2 • Vikings 3)

All in all, the Saints got 7 first-place votes out of a possible 15. The score breaks down like this: Saints 7, Colts 4, Packers 2, Cowboys 2. No real systematic disrespect that I can see...but the respect ain't there, either. You know that if Indy had won, they'd be a unanimous choice at the top of the power rankings...and the Saints, those poseurs, would be back down to 24.

But, I can live with it. Not enough respect, but we'll fly under the radar. And Bucky Brooks is still peeing his pants. (Am I the only one who thinks that microwave popcorn smells like wet diapers?)
