Saints sign LB Clint Ingram to One Year Deal

The Saints finally addressed their serious need at linebacker this off-season by signing former Jaguars starter, Clint Ingram, to a one year deal. Per the Times-Pic...

The New Orleans Saints and free agent linebacker Clint Ingram have agreed to terms on a one-year contract, team officials said late Wednesday afternoon. Financial terms of the deal were not immediately disclosed.

I think we all knew this was coming. My feelings are lukewarm about Ingram. Based on the fact the team only offered him a one year deal, I'd say the Saints share similar feelings. As for you guys, the vote from earlier this week shows 70% of you said you wanted to see the Ingram signing happen, so I expect 70% of the comments below to be positive.

How ya feelin'?

I feel good that, at the very least, there’s another body in camp at that position… I don’t know enough about him to say he’s guaranteed to start, but he will be a nice addition to the competition.

There wasn’t really much out there on the FA market, so… I can’t wait to see him play.

They only signed Sharper to a one year deal… different circumstances, yes; but that was an ‘experiment’ that turned out pretty well.

we'll see

I got some cautious optimism about this…maybe he’ll get 5 sacks of Favre in game one (not too cautious, is it???)

We've got 27 ways to add up to 11 (players on the field). I came up with another one last night. -- GW

I like the signing because it gives us at least a little more depth at the postion. I truely think Dunbar should be given a chance as are starter. Seems like most the time he’s in as a back up he makes some type of play. So lets see if he can handle the starting role. I just think Ingram is “ok” nothing to be to excited about.

I really wanted to see if we could still get Merramen from the chargers. I heard about how close we came in the draft but his agent wanted to much. I say lets go full out to try to get him. What a nasty bunch of LB’S we would have with him and Vilma. Who would want to run on us then?

GAAA!!!!! He hasn’t had a good season since 2007. He hasn’t been a good teammate or a decent person since birth.

Shawne Merriman-LB – Chargers May. 12 – 1:35 pm et
The New Orleans Times-Picayune disputes a San Diego Union-Tribune report that the Saints pursued Shawne Merriman during April’s draft. The Times-Picayune cites “multiple sources.” It’s possible that the Saints did consider a move, but backed off when then-Merriman agent Tom Condon requested his client be made among the highest-paid pass rushers in the league. Merriman is also an odd fit in New Orleans’ 4-3.
Shawne Merriman-LB- Chargers May. 13 – 5:53 pm et According to ESPN’s Adam Schefter, the Chargers would accept a second-round pick in exchange for unsigned restricted free agent OLB Shawne Merriman. Of course they would. Merriman wants to break the bank on a long-term deal even though he lost his pass rushing ability two years ago. It’s hard to picture any team willing to give up an early-round pick in addition to meeting Merriman’s outrageous contract demands.

Frankly

I would rather see our guys get the chance. Dunbar, Casillas, Arnoux. But then again, maybe Williams doesn’t like what he sees…and if he likes Ingram better, I suppose he should be given the pieces he thinks will work.

I like the signing from a depth perspective only.

In addition it gives us another special teams player.

I do not forsee him having a significant year, however it is good insurance.

I'm hoping the change of scenery will do him a ton of good

News was that he was being moved all over the place and the schemes had changed from mainly 4-3 to more 3-4 and he wasn’t as effected partly as a result of those changes and the inconsistencies of his placement down after down on the field.

Besides, doesn’t Jack Del Rio have a history of getting into it with his linebackers on a continual basis anyway? And who would be happy about playing in Jacksonville with zero fan support anyway? Seriously!

I betcha he’ll really enjoy the love in NOLA and I predict that he flourishes here…

by realheavyd on May 19, 2010 7:29 PM CDT reply actions

+1

I don’t know about him flourishing, but I expect he’ll have a better year with us than he did last year. The Jags were a defensive mess last season. I think Del Rio gets too involved in his defenses to the dismay of his DC and players. G-Dub sure seemed happy to get away from there last year. I seem to remember reports that Williams and Del Rio would sometimes butt heads on how the D should be run.

I really like this move

Not because I am certain that Clint Ingram will be a surefire starter (or even a good player), but because I think he balances out our risk percentages at the position.

Clearly the Saints feel like at least one of our unproven young guys (Dunbar, Casillas, or Arnoux) stands a good chance to be a capable starter, otherwise they probably would have drafted an OLB. But it’s always good to have an insurance policy in the event that the unproven guys can’t cut it. A one year deal for Ingram seems about right in order to:

1.) have insurance in case the younger guys aren’t ready
2.) have depth at the position in case only one of the young guys is ready, but he gets injured
3.) catch someone who maybe was in the wrong scheme that is capable of being a starter in a different system

When we evaluate the OLB position for the Saints, we may not have a sure-fire guy that we know can get it done, but between the 4 guys we have, the percentages seem pretty high that AT LEAST one of these guys will pull it off.

I'm not sure

what to think. I mean, he came out of oklahoma with alot of potential, but never really built off of his rookie season. ive got my fingers crossed for arnoux. i like that kid.

by saintfever09 on May 19, 2010 8:20 PM CDT reply actions

Just think like this...

I’m thinking that at least it gives us another veteran LB to hold down the fort along with Scott Shanle on either side of Jonathan Vilma while helping to guide the younger guys trying to make the squad at the position and give them further help along the way to maybe making one, two or three of them into real studs by the end of this year or going into next year.

it seems like

every “vote for _ (player)” we put up here everyone is all for it. (except jamarcus russell for some reason)

by GRlZZ on May 19, 2010 8:43 PM CDT reply actions

I'm gonna paraphrase Hall of Famer, Ricky Jackson

In his recent interview fanposted on this site, he talked about modern linebackers being hybrids that are basically situational players. Very few are complete defenders and most are used situationally.
From that perspective, I like the signing. Ingram can be a starter at best, and at worst be in a rotation with the LBs on the roster. I wonder if Adalius Thomas was not the best LB in free agency, but perhaps Ingram is more mobile and a better fit for our system.

Who else were we going to put over there……..HONESTLY? Arnoux…Dunbar…Casillas? Lets see how training camp goes. I bet he starts vs. Minnesota.

Better than what we got. DT Henderson is still out there……..now that would be nice.

Thanks stujo4!

Ya I didnt know that part about how much money he wants. I know he wants a long term deal which is good but I wouldnt give him to much money. But I think he would be a great pick up for the saints. The man can rush trust me but the chargers D also didnt blitz with him as much as they did a few years ago. He’s a beast and in are D he would shine. But not for the money he wants…sorry Merriman

Good question...

It looks there is no number available in the mid-teens apart from 41…. what is the number range for LB’s btw??

He’ll probably wind up wearing 55 or 57 before it’s all over with. I doubt both Kyle and Coleman make the team.

Agree on Kyle

Gresham may be the new snapper in waiting (and is going to save the team some dollars in the process)

Ingram Signing

Wrong guy at a critical time…there were better folks out there but we never made the move for them. I still think a big time guy on the outside would have given us a better D and a better chance to get back to the big game. I hope I’m wrong, but I just can’t see Ingram being the answer to improving our pass rush.

Ingram

Wrong guy? In the Saint’s perspective of “not” shelling out alot of money, this is just what the Saints would do. I totally agree with it. A fresh start for someone that knows Williams system, a chance for competition at LB to push our pick from last year that was IR, along with the others. A good team is made by hungry players that are hungry for playing time, hungry to make a play, hungry to learn, not hungry for the money that a “big name” would require. This brings competition. Also, with the next cut down of players from teams to come, there is plenty of optimism.
