Breaking News: Jeremy Shockey Hospitalized with Seizure-Like Symptoms
Per Ed Daniels, ABC26 here in New Orleans...
ABC26 Sports and NewOrleans.com have learned that Saints tight end Jeremy Shockey was taken to a local hospital this afternoon.
According to a league source, Shockey was suffering from seizure-like symptoms in the club's weight room after practice. He was able to walk on his own power to a waiting ambulance.
Woah! Doesn't sound too good. Hopefully this isn't as serious as reported and just another incident of dehydration. Keep checking back as I will update this post with more information as it comes in.
Update: NewOrleans.com has some more info on Shockey's seizure, including this eyewitness report given by an anonymous Saints player...
"It was a little scary; it looked like maybe a mild seizure or a full body cramp or something,'' the player said. "There were a decent amount of guys in the weight room at the time. At first nobody really knew what was going on, but the trainers took control of the situation after a while.
"He was shaking and everything, and he was basically out of it for probably a minute or so, but it seemed longer. After he started coming back everything was pretty much all right. He seemed aware and everything seemed OK after a while. He got up and was walking around.''
Update: Looks like Jeremy is going to be just fine. He tweeted this about five minutes ago...
I am ok, thanks to everyone who has shown their concern don't worry about me I will be fine.. WHO DAT!!
...and Sean Payton confirms the news...
"I talked to Jeremy from the hospital and the good news is he's feeling better and everything looks real good,''
"He'll likely finish up his tests and spend the night in the hospital. They don't know if it was dehydration or what. That's what they're going through right now. They just want to make sure it's nothing more significant than that.''

3 types of dehydration
1. Hypernatremia: Where sustain high levels of Na+ salt= >145mg/DL
2 Isonatremia: Where you sustain equal levels of NA+ ions (salt) and H20 water= NA+ 135-145mg/dl
3. Hyponatremia: (Most common) Salt levels drop below 135mg/dl More commonly related to people consuming large amounts of water and performing strenous work outs.
Potassium is a major component in the dehydration.
Severe dehydration leads to heat exaustion. Heat exaustion leads to heat stroke. Heat exaustion and heat stroke can have full blown seziures or seziure activity due to the lack of potassium with the muscle cells

They will most likely due a fluid and electrolyte panel on him.
They will also probally give him > 1000ml Lactated Ringers IV.
It has a lot of electrolytes such as sodium and calicum.
Was it not last year when he was hospitalized for dehydration? The whole pool incident?

And test him for epilepsy.
"Obviously, we're all oil industry." -MMS Lake Charles District Manager Larry Williamson
depends.
They can typically rule that out without an electroencephlyogram (EEG) (the little electrodes they stick to your head, where you look like Medusa. But you are right. They may perform the test. The problem with the test is that you almost have to have seziure activity (irritable neuron excitibility) in order to test positive for the condition. In addition the medication that you can take for the condition (barbuitates) is classivied as a schedual two or three drug because of its sedative properties.
There are also several subtypes of Epilepsy. I will not bore you with those details.
If they rule out a family history of the condition, and there is a deviation in his fluid and electrolytes they they would most likely treat that (the fluid and electrolyte balance) and defer the Elipepsy testing.
Chances are if this is his first seziure it more than likely would not be Elipesy. If it were, then he would have likely have had a episode in his childhood or eary adulthood. With that said I am not a Doctor. But I extensively understand the medical condition because my daughter has it.

Get better soon, Jeremy
We didn’t lose a game he started in all year. Of course, I hope he gets better, anyway, but I just wanted to point that out.
Dave is so quick with his updates
I can see it now. If he got on a car wreck with Brees he would probably run in and post an update on here before calling the police or his insurance.

I'm hoping it's just from working too hard or dehydration
Wasn’t dehydration the reason given for him passing out at poolside at some event in Vegas last summer? Maybe he has a condition or something that’s causing this. I hope it’s not serious and he’ll be better soon. At least he was able to walk to the ambulance. That’s welcomed news.

Maybe
It seems coincidental to me considering that that was exactly 1 year and 3 days ago. I wouldn’t be surprised to find out that dehydration had a part in today’s incident. I don’t think it was ever confirmed that mass quantities of alcohol were responsible for what happened last year, was it? I think it was pretty much assumed but never confirmed. I wonder if he’s on some form of medication or something that may be causing this.

I'm not a doctor. I just play one on CSC.
I’m really beginning to think he may have some condition that he either does/does not know about that may be causing this. Twice in almost exactly a year seems too coincidental. I hope whatever it is isn’t a threat to his long term health.

Once someone has some sort of dehydration/heat exaustion/heat stroke episode.
It significantly predisposes them to another future incident.
I think this may be the situation he found himself in.

I hope they figure out whats wrong if it is some kind of condition because God forbid he’s at home by himself and this happens and no one is there to help him. But its a good sign he was able to walk on his own afterward.
