Mock Depth Chart

The draft hooplah is finally over, and I am bored again...So I decided to make a prediction on what our starting lineup will look like by the start of the regular season. I think Stanley Arnoux will surprise some people and take over the empty LB postion. I remember looking at his college footage after we drafted him and was pretty impressed, and I am also guessing that he's been studying while injured and knows the defense by now. I also think Darren Sharper will reclaim his FS postion this year (hoping he is 100% from surgery). The only other big change is I think Meachem will fully take over the #2 WR position on offense. He was great last year and here's hoping he improves even more this year! I think the "Brown" situation is up in the air...I am not sure if we're going to trade Jammal Brown and if we do, I will presume Charles Brown will ride the pine all year and Jermon Bushrod will get the starting nod. So, what do you think we're gonna do this year? Any thoughts on the center? Could Tennant take over at some point this year? Here's my "mock" lineup with a base offense and 4-3 D:

Star-divide

O  Sharper
O  Harper
O  Arnoux O  Vilma O  Shanle
O  Porter O  Smith O  Hargrove/Ayodele O  Ellis O  Brown O  Greer
 ___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

O  Colston O  J Brown O  Nicks O  Goodwin O  J Evans O  Stinchcomb O  Shockey O  Meachem
O Brees
O  H Evans
O  Thomas

Your base offense would probably be more effective with a second WR. Unless we’re rolling with ten players to make it more fair for our opponents.

Meachem is cut off of this page, and I think it should be Henderson anyway.

Greer is also cut off as the other CB.

Honestly

Expect Woods to push Ayodele for 1st and second run stopping duties. Hargrove in on third downs for his pass rushing.

With Vaughn, Young, Sharper, Reis, Harper, Porter, Greer, Gay, Jenkins, Robinson, Torrence on the backend, we can’t keep the all can we? On paper Reis and Torrence on the weak links, but Reis for one is a special teams standout.

Out of curiosity does everyone feel Arnoux is the clear choice? Obviously we don’t know too much about the kid given his injury last year. I do know Casillias saw a fair amount of time and the coaching staff is a fan of Dunbar. I’m gonna need you guys to give me mini camp updates and training camp updates galore. Montana isn’t exactly a mecca for Saints football info.

I heard on yahoo that right now Jonathan Casillas and Jo-Lonn Dunbar are the leading candidates to start in Fujita’s old spot.

Conventional wisdom says Stanley Arnoux, based on his draft position (118th). Neither Casillas nor Dunbar were drafted. That truly doesn’t mean anything, though. Where are Courtney Watson (60th), Alfred Fincher (82nd) and Cie Grant (86th) these days? All were drafted by Loomis, at least a full round earlier than Arnoux, and amounted to very little. I honestly don’t expect a starter to be named until the tail end of training camp.

they're all leading candidates

Isn't

Dunbar more of a middle LB?

I can’t remember about the other two. I think Arnoux was a MLB they were planning on moving outside. And obviously, Casillas played some outside last year, but not sure in college.

by ReggieVilma on May 4, 2010 11:05 PM CDT up reply actions

Dunbar’s an OLB. He’ll likely remain on the strongside, as there’s a shortage of bodies on that side. While a bit undersized, he’s arguably the most physical of any of our OLBs.

If I had to guess, the depth chart probably looks something like:

WLB
Evans
Casillas
Arnoux (also MLB)
Beauchamp (also DE)

MLB
Vilma
Mitchell
Coleman (also SS)

SLB
Shanle
Dunbar (also WLB)
Waters

at the moment. Evans was Fujita’s backup last season, so you pretty much have to pencil him in as the starting Will, at least until someone else steps up. Two of these guys probably don’t make the final roster. Also, bear in mind that both Evans and Casillas are heavily involved on special teams. Dunbar is also, albeit to a lesser extent. Not that that carries a TON of weight, but if Beauchamp or Coleman aren’t able to contribute in that capacity, you would have to think they’re at least not going to be kept in favor of those two/three. Also, Bobby McCray has played OLB before, so that probably doesn’t bode well for someone at the Will. Vilma’s a lock and I really don’t see Shanle slipping to third on the shallow side. Outside of those two, I think it’s an open competition.

nice chart and writeup.

In your opinion… Do you think Evans can handle the load? Or will someone else step up? Or do we need a FA/trade?

by Dan Kelly on May 5, 2010 8:41 AM CDT up reply actions

Coleman

is definitely an OLB, that’s where he played last year and he’s a bit undersized for a LB anyways. But he’s got great coverage skills for a LB (maybe a little slow for SS, but Harper’s not a blazer either…) so I think OLB fits him much better.

This depth chart is horrible

and Dunbar is gunna take the open LB spot. Arnoux will be the 3-4 ILB

Since Deverey's hands have gotten so much better

I kind of see him and Meahcem as very similar WR. They both have similar speed and hands. However, Meachem is a little taller and a little better after the catch I think.

Keep in mind

Meachem was playing hurt the last half of the season. I’ve been a fan of Henderson since he came in and think he was one of the mvps of the play off run but a 100% meachem is hard to beat.
