Saints Predict-A-Poll: 1,000-Yard Receiver?

We all know Sean Payton runs the Saints offense with precision and most importantly, balance. Combined with the sheer awesomeness of Drew Brees, it has done wonders for the best offense in the league but not necessarily for wideouts looking to rack up yardage on the field.

During the 2008 season, there were no receivers to break the barrier - Lance Moore came dangerously close with 928 yards - yet the Saints maintained the best passing offense in the league. Last season, Marques Colston was the only receiver on the team to register over 1,000 yards, though barely, breaking the milestone by only 74 yards. In fact, since Payton took over the team in 2006, Colston has been the only player to catch for over 1,000 yards in a single season.

In short, the sum of the Saints passing attack is greater than it's parts. So the question today is simple:Will any of the Saints receivers break the 1,000 yard mark. If so, who will it be?

Remember, the purpose of this series of posts will be to record everyone's predictions about the 2010 Saints season, with each post covering a specific topic. While this post may be discussing the possibility of a 1,000-yard receiver specifically, feel free to elaborate and go into detail about any and all of your prognostications regarding the Saints receiving game next season in this post. After the season, we will go back to this post and others like it for a good laugh or a pat on the back.

Colston gets another 1000 yard season

As for how the passing game will be next year, we have Drew Brees, what more needs to be said?

Lance Moore is an option, but Robert Meachem isn’t?

I agree,

Meachem should be on the poll, although I would still vote Colston.

Sorry

I forgot that there should have been an option for other receivers. My bad.

Colston and the usual logjam....

But watch out for Rod Harper climbing that depth chart

Gimme Some Moore.

Moore was a bit of a forgotten man last season due to injuries and whatnot. I think he comes back with a vengeance this coming season. The emergence of Meachem, combined with Henderson’s continued use as a deep threat and Colston always getting attention leaves a portion of the field open to exploitation. I think Moore reaps the rewards along with a healthy dose of Shockey and maybe even Jimmy Graham (though obviously neither of those two will sniff a 1000 yard season).

by Jimbo03 on Jun 14, 2010 9:11 AM CDT reply actions

He has to get on the field first

You sound like you’re describing a four-receiver set (not counting tight ends). Not gonna happen that often. Moore will have to beat out the competition in 3-wide sets in order to climb the depth chart and get more playing time.

I know who i am! I'm the dude playing the dude disguised as another dude!

by MtnExile on Jun 14, 2010 9:40 AM CDT up reply actions

I’m not talking about four receiver sets. I just mean that with the possible exception of Henderson, Moore will likely garner the least amount of defensive attention when he’s on the field now. I’m sure he’ll be accounted for, but I imagine Colston and keeping Meachem out of the endzone after his performances last year will take priority, not keeping the ball out of Moore’s hands 9-12 yards past the line of scrimmage. And with both Colston and Meachem collecting minor injuries every year like they’re Pokemon, I kind of doubt he’ll be hurting for playing time as the season wears on.

by Jimbo03 on Jun 14, 2010 4:03 PM CDT up reply actions

If any, Colston

Although, with the way Drew spreads the ball around so efficiently, it’s likely none will break the 1,000 yard barrier. They’ll all come close, provided they all stay healthy. I was thinking Meachem could really have a break out year, but he’s already injured. He’ll be ready in time for training camp, but you have to wonder if this isn’t a sign of things to come.

Colston will break 1000 again.

This has probably been discussed already, but has any other QB had a 4000+ yard passing season and not had a WR with over 1000 yards, as Drew did in 2008?

Jon Kitna!? :-O

Was he in Detroit?

Is he a backup somewhere right now?

he actually had a 5000+ yard season without doing it though

It could just as easily be any on of four as it could be none.

The way the Saints spread the ball around, a receiver may have a 160 yard game one week and then have almost no touches the next week. (I believe this happened to Colston this year. I could be wrong.) I think if one of the guys has a couple of games with some really long receptions and stays healthy and in the mix all year, Colston, Moore, Meachem and Henderson all have 1000-yard season potential, but if it does happen, I don’t think it will be more than one. Unless we just abandon the run altogether or something.

by Nabb1 on Jun 14, 2010 9:34 AM CDT reply actions

I'm the only one to vote for another receiver not listed

I actually decided to say Robert Meachem right here. Colston is the safe solid pick to get to 1,000 because like Dave said, he’s the only one to do it in this offense (twice). Lance Moore should be coming back healthy after an injury-plagued year last year. I think that Meachem will step up big this year. If this were about TD catches, who will have like 10 or more TD cateches, I would say Colston and Meachem. Meachem seems like everytime he touches the ball, he scores.

I feel like Meachem will gain the 2nd most yards of our WRs. He was great when targeted last season, and I don’t think he dropped a single pass.

R. Meachum

Should definately be on the list. As far as upside goes, he’s got it. Frankly, I think that any of our WR have a shot a 1000 yards even though 62.5 ypg is not saying much.

by jray2000 on Jun 14, 2010 11:31 AM CDT reply actions

62.5 ypg by 4 or 5 receivers is really good though. haha

Another fearless prediction:

Colston gets 1000+ yards this season, since Loomis is about to tick off PT and our running game will suffer this season.

They don't him "Big Trusty" fo nuttin'

Voted Colston, Drew seems to find him when needs him. Barely a 1000 yds, but we got weapons. I’ll add Lil’ Bobby Meachem to The Grudge List, (see above) Like to see both with K each. Stay healthy Bro’s.

It is tough to decide

I like Colston for it but it will all come down to who stays healthy. If they all stay health, which is unusual, then I don’t think anybody will. Can you all imagine how good the offense would be if they all stayed healthy?

by dalleoman on Jun 14, 2010 9:44 PM CDT reply actions

I pick Meachem

And I would not be overly shocked if Moore was a preseason cut.

by creeperjones on Jun 14, 2010 9:51 PM CDT reply actions

Maybe

From what I hear Moore is doing well and I don’t think they will cut a quality reciever while all of these other teams are dying for recievers. If Moore is not on the team I think it will be due to a trade. I could be wrong though and they are not in pads yet.

by dalleoman on Jun 15, 2010 12:35 AM CDT up reply actions

while all of these other teams are dying for recievers

What teams are those? There is not one team right now that is looking to make a big move for a WR, just ask TO. Moore will be in uniform when the season starts. Remember, he was our leading receiver just 2 years ago. I don’t think we’ll be seeing him leave for a while

by Alex Swift on Jun 15, 2010 11:36 AM CDT up reply actions

What makes you think Moore will get cut? He’s signed his tender. He played 16 full games two seasons in a row previous to last year. He has right around an average of 10 yards per reception for his career. He has special teams value. Not sure I see the issue with any of that for what he gets paid.

by Jimbo03 on Jun 16, 2010 8:20 AM CDT up reply actions

Economics

101 but would like to be wrong and Meachem get the grand.
