Pierre Thomas Signs 1-Year Tender but Still Holding Out for More
Pierre Thomas has finally signed the original 1-year tender the Saints offered the restricted free agent, per Adam Schefter and Jason LaCanfora on Twitter...
A score in New Orleans: Saints running back Pierre Thomas signed his restricted free agent tender today.
Saints RB Pierre Thomas has signed his contract tender, according to a league source. Still hopes to get long-term deal at some point.
Not surprising this happened just before the June 15th deadline, which would have meant the Saints could have reduced Pierre's offer had he still remained unsigned.
Last week Thomas' agent, Lamont Smith, sounded threatening when asked what he would do if the Saints didn't up their original offer...
"We have a plan."
I guess the plan was simply to sign the offer. Score one for Mickey Loomis on this one. The only question now is whether or not there is bad blood between Thomas and the organization. According to WWLTV , that may very well be the case. The Flying Frenchman will continue to hold out for a long-term contract and has only signed the offer to save the nearly one million dollars he would have lost following the deadline.
On a sidenote, LaCanfora also has an update on Lance Moore, another Saints restricted free agent yet to sign his tender...
Saints WR Lance Moore will sign his tender this week. June 15 deadline not significant for him. More upcoming on NFL.com

The only question now is whether or not this little contractual feud has caused bad blood between Thomas and the organization.
Good point, and a question that probably won’t be answered until the next offseason.
Glad he signed, anyway.

my thoughts exactly...
there are players that ooze talent and make every play look effortless; and there are players who put everything they’ve got into every play and get it done anyway. The Flying Frenchman strikes me as the latter, and I worry we won’t see the same hustle. Hopefully we arent stuck with ‘the feckless Frenchman’ next season.

That makes no sense
There is no way Pierre does not so the same hustle next season. If he wants to make more money then the Saints are offering now then he has to prove to them as well as other teams that he is worth it. I know he is worth way more then he was making the past few seasons but he does not deserve to be payed like the top backs in the league. He is a key to the team but he is not a running back that carries the entire offense. I have the utmost respect for Pierre and what he has done as a Saint but he needs to bring his expectations down to a realistic level.
no disrespect intended
I just meant subconsciously, is he going to be the same guy after feeling slighted.

good point
I agree we wont know until the season is finished. All I am saying is he cant afford to let his play slip. If he does then he wont be worth the same as he is now.
I agree
The NFL is a lot like just about every business is now a days. It’s the “what have you done for me lately” way of thinking. If you have been a top notch employee for say 10 years and you march into your boss’ office and demand a raise; If he doesn’t want to give you one, you can’t simply decided to not perform your job at the same level you have been. If you do then in your boss’ mind, you will have justified to him that he made the right decision in not giving you a raise because he will feel that your performance is not worth it. It’s that short sightedness that takes over just about every business owner or manager. As an employee, the sad fact is that you are not in a position to control things such as that unless you are simply irreplaceable, then you may have some leverage. I can bet that Pierre is not viewed as irreplaceable in Loomis or Payton’s eyes. Although I am sure they value him, if they feel they can not reach an agreement and he walks, then they will not mortgage the farm to keep him. He can only play this season as good or better than he has been and use that for future negotiations with his contract or God forbid, negotiations with another team. Hang in their “P” and try to not take it personal and remember that it is a business. Play for yourself and play for us fans then trust that the better you do, the better things will get for yourself.
what is the deal?
why not give 23 what he really does deserve. the guy has been competitive from day 1 and he improves every year. what gives?
Like it or not, NFL teams are run like businesses, and they’re gonna do all they can to offer players just enough money to get them to sign contracts. Just because Pierre performs well and helps them win the Super Bowl doesn’t mean the Saints are gonna toss him an extra $10m out of the kindness of their hearts. I’m not even sure Mickey Loomis has a heart.
If I am good I could add years to my life / I would rather add some life to my years.
He has all the heart in the world . . .
. . . just not all the money in the world.
Seriously, though. I’d like to see them not nickel and dime every player to death. Happiness in the locker room is worth a lot of dough.

I guess the plan was simply to sign the offer.
I hope, for PT’s sake, that the plan was to sign the offer and show up for training camp. Because as a player now officially under contract, if he doesn’t show up 30 days before the first game of the season, he loses a year of credit towards free agency. And unless the threshold becomes THREE (or less) years after the next CBA, then he’ll have royally screwed up.
And the odds of the number dropping to three or less are pretty much equivalent to a snowball in hell… unless the union caves on just about every other demand the league makes, that is.
I'm not surprised he signed the tender
And I’ll bet he’ll be lucky to get any long-term offer now, since this is the last year of the CBA. No one knows what next year will bring, so I kind of doubt the Saints will make any long term offer now. We’ll see what happens. Hope he shows up for camp, and lets his work on the field this season show that he’s well worth the future consideration!
"The Saints made the right decision signing Drew Brees-not just in terms of his arm, but because of his heart and mind." - Marshall Faulk
I know everyone wants to see their favorite players getting big paychecks
But I’m glad they got him without giving as much as he wanted. This team just made Jahri Evans the highest paid guard in league history. Darren Sharper got a bit of a raise. The free agent moves of Alex Brown, Jimmy Wilkerson and Clint Ingram aren’t cheap. Drew Brees and Marques Colston both have big pay increases coming in the not-too-distant future. Those moves all cost money. And I know there isn’t a salary cap this year, but what happens if we gave Pierre the 3 or 4 year contract he wanted, and there is a salary cap next year? The team is then put in a real bind.
So instead of feeling sorry for Pierre (he is making money comperable to RBs in his production range), I say we should be happy that this move is good for the Saints organization.

Didn't Colston already sign a new contract
