Saints Surprisingly Release Bobby McCray
Seemingly out of nowhere the Saints have release defensive end Bobby McCray. The Times-Pic has the story.
The only word from McCray himself comes via Scott Cody of WWLTV...
I'm speechless
That makes all of us. Jeff Duncan's reaction on Twitter confirms everyone's confusion and surprise...
Did not see that coming.
...as he tries to shed some light on possible reasons McCray may have been released...
Not sure exact reason but McCray was never a favorite of Payton or #Saints staff. Blew too many assignments & committed too many penalties.
I found it noteworthy in Sean Payton's book that McCray was twice late for meetings/team functions, including Super Bowl media day.
But Pro Football Talk has another, more likely reason for the McCray release to share...
Saints likely dumped Bobby McCray to avoid $1.25M bonus
If there is any good news in this situation, perhaps it's that the Saints need to free up some money to pay Pierre Thomas what he's actually worth? Just speculation on my part.
I was actually excited about seeing what McCray would bring to the table this season after hearing that he was also playing a little outside linebacker in 3-4 alignments during minicamp.
Oh well...

Free up some $?
Could be to pay PT what he’s worth, but more likely to give Brees a top-QB raise. It’s more likely that Payton and Williams didn’t think he’d be worth the $ and figure they can do just as well without him. I wasn’t aware that McCray was unfavored among Payton and the staff. It’s still a shocker.

maybe the Saints
are really high on one of the youngsters like Junior Galette. I doubt they wanted to pay McCray that $1.25 million bonus when that money could go towards re-signing Brees, Thomas, Harper, and Moore. Along with that, McCray always struggled mightily against the run and was inconsistent as a pass rusher. They may feel that Alex Brown, Jimmy Wilkerson, and one of the young guys can deliver for them.
this just occurred to me...
maybe they are moving hargrove back to defensive end?

If that's the case keep an ear they may be in the market for a tackle

or maybe not.
last year, clancy, ellis, ayodele, and hargrove made the roster at DT. however, once clancy got injured, pressley came back to the team. so this year, wouldn’t pressley, ellis, ayodele, and woods make it?

I had that same thought
His natural position is at end, and playing DT last year probably helped make him better against the run. Brown, Hargrove, Smith, and Charleston at end, and Ellis, Ayodele, Woods, and Pressley at DT
Peyton, I can eat Oreos faster than you!!!!
I heard
that he can have a bad attitude from someone I know who works with the Saints….if you ever noticed, he’s usually one of the guys getting into fights during practice

from RotoWorld
Free agent DE Bobby McCray reportedly had a $1.25 million roster bonus pending before his Monday release from the Saints.
McCray was due the bonus on July 1. A starter in the Super Bowl, McCray’s release has created a bigger stir in the football media than it probably should have. He was not an especially productive pass rusher last season, was due an excessive $3.25 million (bonus plus salary), and was never a favorite of Sean Payton’s staff. Look for undrafted rookie Junior Galette to get a chance to fill McCray’s old nickel rushing role behind Alex Brown and Will Smith.
An even worse result
No more “93 Octane” articles at Nola.com. I kinda liked those. The main thing I remember from those was McCray saying how G-Dub chews their ass every week no matter how well they play. That’s my kind of coaching – keep pushing for even better results.

I've been saying it for a while
For everyone that said “pay the man” when it was time for your favorite player’s contract to be renegotiated, this is the ramifications of “paying the man.”

Not a surprise really.
Averaged 2 tackles a game in starter duty. Was not the great in situational pass rush scenarios last year. The only real surprise is that we already had a weak set of DE’s to begin with. Now we’re down to Smith, Brown, Wilkerson as the main 3. Best guess is, look for Hargrove to play all 4 spots along the line this year. He’ll be the main rotational man for Williams.
Now pardon me as i continue to curse the Colts for selecting Hughes just before us.

They still have a lot of signings to go before they can reproduce the Saints in Georgia.
It was worth the wait.

Never lived up to his potential as far as I'm concerned
That being said, I hope he finds his way back into the organization. I think he was a big contributor to changing the attitude of our defense.
Though his stats aren’t becoming of an individual due $1 million+ in bonuses and incentives, the intangibles and nasty streak he possesses served as major contributing factors to the Saints’ playoff run.
"There are those that make it happen, those that watch it happen, and those that stand around and wonder what the hell happened." -- Drew Brees
His pending DUI suspension was due to coincide with Will Smith’s StarCaps suspension. Not sure how much he would have contributed early on, if at all. I personally liked what he brought to the table in terms of hustle and versatility, but he was arguably more of a liability than an asset last year and it remains a “what have you done for me lately?” league. I can’t really say it surprises me. Maybe something with Merriman really is in the works(?)

Do you think they'd hire him back for less money??
Having heard nothing from McCray, I keep wondering if they are going to re-sign him next week. Is that a possibility?
McCray wasn’t that productive in a numbers-wise way but he was quick enough to cause problems for opposing o-lines. I thought he was above average in effectiveness. If he has a bad attitude then that is a great reason to get rid of him. But he seemed okay to me. The dood produced.
