Madden 11 Player Rankings Leaked
We all know Drew Brees is currently the best player in all of football and now, courtesy of the leaked video below, we also know he'll be the best in all of Madden, too. One of the six best anyway. That's certainly not a shocker, but the ratings of some other Saints players might be a bit more surprising.
From the look of it, someone got their hand on the controller of a Madden-loaded Xbox and quickly flipped through the overall and speed ratings of each position group, all while videotaping it. A complete listing of all the top overall ratings by position is listed after the jump but feel free to watch the video to see each positions speed ratings also.
So which Saints players ratings, other than Drew Brees, were good enough to be revealed and just where did they fall? Who didn't make the cut? Meet me after the jump to find out. When you're finished, be sure to share any and all of your thoughts about these ratings or about playing Madden in general.
Probably the number I found most surprising was Usama Young's 91 speed rating, making him the eighth fastest free safety in the league according to the game. Has Usama ever been known for his speed? That's news to me but good for him.
If Usama Young's speed isn't a surprise, perhaps the fact that Anthony "Tony" Hargrove is ranked as the fastest defensive tackle in the league, though only with a 76 rating. I know he's got a non-stop motor but I didn't think it was good enough to be tops of the league.
Speaking of speed, check out Devery Henderson ratings. He's a burner.
One Saints player noticeably absent among the games top wide receivers is Marques Colston. I know he doesn't put up huge stats like Brandon Marshall or Larry Fitzgerald but that's simply because the Saints offense does a great job spreading the ball around. As far as raw talent is concerned, I certainly think Colston deserves a rating higher than a 91. Tell me I'm wrong.
Here is a full list of former and current Saints superlatives:
- Jahri Evans is the best right guard with a 98 rating
- Jon Stinchcomb is the best right tackle with a 90 rating
- Anthony Hargrove is the fastest defensive tackle with a 76 rating

Your Wrong, just kidding. Totally agree about Colston.
Also, I didn’t know Mike Karney made it back on the Saints squad. I’m sure you meant Heath Evans. I haven’t bought a copy of Madden in years, but this is one I will have to get. I kind of wish I would have plan my trip to New Orleans earlier in August to be there for Fat Madden day.
i already preordered it

i preordered it too
for ps3. i usually wait to buy last year’s version of madden when the new one comes out, bc i don’t understand spending $50+ when you can get the previous iteration for like $15. that being said, i HAD to buy this one – not only is brees on the cover, the superdome and saints fans are as well. never before has a madden game given props to a city like that.

“As far as raw talent is concerned, I certainly think Colston deserves a rating higher than a 91. Tell me I’m wrong.”
You’re wrong. Certainly a physical presence, as well as a consistent target, but he’s primarily a product of the scheme being run. Stick Ernest Wilford in a Saints uniform, throw to him 100+ times over the course of a season and he’s inevitably going to put up Colston numbers. His yards per reception aren’t anything special, nor are his yards after the catch. There’s a reason he was drafted in the 7th. By the same token, he’s a great fit in this offense. Even better if he was playing the slot imo, but that’s an entirely different topic.

Not buying it
And this…
There’s a reason he was drafted in the 7th.
…is just faulty logic. Colston’s talent has absolutely nothing to do with the way teams (incorrectly) evaluated him. If we’re going by draft position, which you seem to be doing, Reggie Bush is one of the best in the league. I know you don’t agree with that.

agreed
the “reason” colston went in the 7th has nothing to do with his talent, as he’s shown. i also disagree that you could plug anyone else (Ernest Wilford? really?) into his spot and get the same production.
Ernest Wilford is roughly the same size and speed as Colston, he’s just not utilized as often. The same could be said of Tyrone Calico, who accomplished even less that Wilford and is no longer playing in the NFL. Herman Moore is also extremely comparable and he had a solid career. You can’t evaluate talent based solely on statistics. Shuffle those players around and I guarantee you, you’d have vastly different results based on the offenses in which they’d play.
Where was Roddy White when Michael Vick was running the show in Atlanta? Why has Alge Crumpler fallen off the map since? Vick and Ryan utilize different strengths and the Falcons offense is/was catered to those strengths. The rise/fall of their primary targets is anything but coincidental.

I agree with CP on this one, as far as the ranking.
Not sure how much Madden you play, but 91 is a very decent score. Colston’s stats just don’t justify a higher number. Just as long as his catch rating is about 97, and his awareness is about 95, I will agree with it. CP is right, his YAC yardage just doesn’t rank up with the elite’s of the league.
I would guess his injury score. speed, and Break tackle scores are dragging him down to 91, which again, I agree with. He’s just not Andre Johnston, and that’s OK.
"They're ready to be like 'Same Old Saints'" - Roman Harper, on each of the New Orleans Saints vanquished foes of 2009
I don’t feel as though it was (necessarily) an incorrect evaluation on the part of 31 other teams. Had he been drafted by just about any other team in the league that year, he would have never gotten the opportunity to start as a rookie. Odds are he would have either been buried on their dept chart or released, possibly never to be heard from again. How many other 7th round picks are outright handed the opportunity to start in a pass-happy system? He capitalized on the opportunity, which I give him full credit for, and has proven to be a fairly solid player ever since.
As far as the Bush comparison goes, not every team would have taken Bush at 2nd overall. They may have had him ranked that high, but not every team plays the BPA card. Case in point, supposedly in excess of 20 of the leagues GMs had Deuce McAllister ranked ahead of LaDainian Tomlinson coming out. San Diego evidently wasn’t one of those teams. Yet, once Tomlinson was off the board, McAllister plummeted. You could almost make the same case for Drew Brees that same draft. The need for a franchise RB and/or QB just wasn’t there in the 1st. I think a pretty good case could be made that, had the Saints NOT taken Bush, he MAY have tumbled a ways. Probably not, as Curtis Martin was at the end of his career at the time, but outside of the Jets, who really needed a RB that year? The 7th round doesn’t work quite that way. Teams are no longer predicated towards need at that point. They’re typically just grasping at straws, trying to land the BPA, regardless of position. Sean Canfield fits that bill this season, although you could probably argue the need for a backup QB. Still, there’s a pretty good chance he doesn’t make the final roster.

None of these are reasons why he isn’t talented, though. Just reasons why the Saints were lucky or smart enough to exploit it and why he’s in the position he is in now.

A little yes, and a little no. The conventional wisdom around the NFL was that Colston would be a TE in the NFL because of his size. When you look at him as a TE out of a small I-AA school like Hofstra, then its no wonder he was projected to go undrafted. In that sense, it was bad scouting to say that a guy who is 6’4", 225 lbs, and runs a 4.50 40 should have to play TE. It was also lazy scouting in the sense that players from smaller schools don’t ever get the attention that you get at big schools. We saw this again with Jahri Evans coming out of Bloomsburg. Being from a small school is the only reason I can see for why he was available in the 4th round.
Ask yourself this. Would Jimmy Graham have even been an afterthought in this year’s draft as a basketball convert that only had one year of football under his belt, if he had played his college ball at a 1-AA school?

I do believe Colston had a better ypc than Fitzgerald and a couple others on the list. Also, look at his TD/catch ratio. Also, higher than some on the list.
TD/catch ratio isn’t a inherent attribute among players. It’s a situational statistic; basically yards per catch, less real estate. That would be like ranking baseball players on their “home run per at bat” ability. Hitting power, hand/eye coordination, etc., those cover it. Granted, yards per catch is a product of agility, speed and discipline in route running. It’s not a true attribute either, but it’s a far more congruent to those core elements than TDs, as it applies to any play from scrimmage, from any point on the field. Put it this way … Darnell Dinkins sets the TD/catch ratio column on fire. Should he be ranked at a 90+?
"I was not on the boat in question." -Darren Sharper
Mike Vrabel is even better. Every catch he’s ever made has been a TD.
"Here's the funny thing. Last night, I couldn't sleep too well. I called my dad (Bill) at 2:15 in the morning, and told him I had a feeling I was going to hit the game-winner from 42 yards on the right hash. I think I was two yards off."- Garrett Hartley
I couldn’t wait until my day was up so I could post. I have a surprise for you guys. You can get the actually Saints ring (well not real diamonds) from gem-fashion.com. They have the replica for $540 in sterling silver, which is the best bet unless you are a baller. You can get 10k white or yellow gold for $2800 (ballers!!!!!!). I choose not to go with the replica I actually got the 99 Rams ring and just got it changed up a lot to fit me and the Saints. I love it, they sent me my design and I should have it in 5 weeks. So there it is you can pick ANY ring from past champions and get it the way you want or you can get the replica. Go check it out fellas!!!
Interesting note:
In clutch games, Adrian Peterson’s fumble rating goes down to single digits. EA Sports really is shooting for realism on this one.

I wonder if they’re ever going to add player trash talking to Madden. Are you even able to hear the QB calling audibles? I guess if you’re playing online, it doesn’t really matter, but if the CPU is your opponent, I think it would be kind of neat to hear individual player voice simulation. They could even have ratings, based on how likely each player was to blurt out something off the wall, etc.
"I was not on the boat in question." -Darren Sharper
that's a great idea
different years have different audio options/tracks, but I remember turning the “field” volume up so I could hear the players… fro what I remember, there used to be a little trash talking, but nothing as cool as you’re talking about.
I call a bunch of ‘hot routes’ and several audibles… it would be awesome to hear Drew making those changes at the line… and even go so far as to mimic his (and other QB’s) unique movements.
"Do not anticipate trouble or worry about what may never happen. Keep in the sunlight. " ~Benjamin Franklin
i think they have generic audibles
but i agree that they should make it more specific. in madden 09 when playing against the colts, the cpu-controlled payton manning very frequently calls audibles at the line – but it’s just a generic voice
I'm suprised too. Freaking Blu-ray man!

Porter and Greer should be at least 90 or better, and Pierre should be 88, David Thomas better be higher than his 77 they had him at last year. And as a non-saint note, How did Andre drop from 99 to 98, who here wants to argue he regressed last year?
interesting
After the 1st two SS, there’s a big drop in the overall rating. Since the lowest is 84, can we assume Roman Harper is rated less than that?

I can’t believe neither of the CB’s made the list. I think between the two of them, they only gave up 1 or 2 TD passes last year. Furthermore, I think Garret Hartley has only missed 1 kick over the past two seasons and he isn’t on the list?!? I think Vilma is a bit under rated as well as center, Jonathan Goodwin. Didn’t they both get elected to play in the Pro Bowl?
Maybe, I am just a homer

Yes
Though a 90 rating is about right (no pun intended). At age 30, he’s at that right point where he is experienced while still maintaining athletecism, and he’s coming off of a great year on an excellent offensive line.
This is probably more reflective of the fact that the best tackles play at the LT spot more than RT. Also, looking down the list of other RTs, it’s hard to pick any of them that are “definitely” better than him.

i think Colston's rating is good.
He doesn’t have the speed to be much higher. Young was crazy fast on this past year’s game too. So fast that he is hard to control while playing him or at least he is for me. Takes a lil getting use to. Why is it that only LT and LG have high/good ratings for all of the top ppl in your lists(compared to the rest of the O-lineman). RG has 2 high 90s then drops to 80s and C isn’t too bad but there’s a big drop from 1st and 2nd.RT has 90 as the best with Stinchcomb. Seems kinda like there arent many good RTs or RGs. Vilma should be higher. Porter and Greer should definetly be around the 90s(idk their ratings) and why is J. Allen always such a high rating. He gets half of his sacks from GB. He should be around a 95 at best. Freeney is much better when he’s healthy imo.
I definetly plan on getting this one and it might be the collector’s edition if they have one. GO 360! 1 1/2 – 2 1/2 years and the new xbox(believe it’s 720) is coming out and in November their coming out with an awsome motion detector like the wii but one that tilts with you and has WiFi built into it along with the ability for voice commands while watching movies or browsing music and built in webcams. It’s not even going to use a controller!! Should be AWSOME!
