happy anno, hope you guys enjoy!

1. the game against Atlanta where he went off for over 10 catches, over 180 yards and about 2 scores. Anytime we embarrass the dirty birds i’m happy. He always had huge games against them.
2. @ Dallas in week 12. I hope we destroy them.
3. Brees and Payton for sure. Duncan probably not.
4. Ever? He’s certainly not retiring this year. I do think this will be his final season, though, regardless of what happens.
5. tough call, but you can’t beat Drago’s chargrilled oysters. If you want cheap eats, Acme is pretty solid. Sake Cafe for sushi. Antoine’s is amazing too.

1. i know its overstated, but cell phone night was awesome! 4tds on MNF!
2. dallas, on turkeyday (im convinced the scheduling was rigged to ensure that it is as difficult as possible for us)
3. preordered all (amazon rox!) – looking forward to sean’s more than drews unfortunately
4. the problem is similar to americas war on drugs…as much as we hate to admit it and love to assign the blame to someone else… the problem is us.
5. i could go on for hours… it would be easier if i just told you what i crave… ribs from the joint… funky margarita rolls from kyoto… double lotto burgers from frost top(lee’s if im in metry)… lobster ravioli from bacco… the flying burrito from juan’s… western special chicken from five happiness… etc.

1. The cell phone celebration, of course.

2. I do agree with the other posters here that going into Dallas on a short week is going to be quite difficult, but I’m going to go with Minnesota in the opener. I can’t help but think back to that nightmarish opening game we had against the Colts a couple seasons back. If the Saints come out the least bit overconfident or sluggish, that could happen again.

3. I might pick up Payton’s, but I doubt I’ll read the other two.

4. Not this time around, but I do actually believe that next season will be his last regardless of the outcome.

5. Didn’t eat out a lot while I lived in New Orleans (poor starving college student and all that), but I did love Saucy’s. Best chicken strips and sweet potato fries on Earth. I never could find their address or phone number again after my Freshman year though, think they went out of business or something. I despaired over it not a little.

by Drunkamania on Jun 27, 2010 7:20 AM CDT reply actions

Wow!! Saucy's!?

Never in a million years did I think anyone would give that answer. Saucy’s was located on the corner of Freret and Lowerline, right near Tulane and Loyola. Very close to my store and two blocks from where I lived in college. In fact I used to work there for a short time before it was Saucy’s when it was called something else (can’t think of it). And before it was called something else, it was called Beebo’s, known for their Steak Bomb sandwhich.

Place looks like an old gas station and most of the seating is outside where it looks like the gas pumps used to be. Unfortunately, Saucy’s is no longer in business. Now it’s called Cafe Freret and it’s been that way for a while. Guess they’re doing okay. Here is their website…http://cafefreret.com/…and more here…http://www.hollyeats.com/CafeFreret.htm

It was indeed once a gas station.

I think the brand was whatever Amoco used to be called. Used to buy gas there for < $0.30/gallon in my teens. BTW Dave, your store used to be our family drugstore, but we referred to it as “Richardson’s” (the owner’s name) rather than Broadway Pharmacy. An old guy named Jeff was the pharmacist; Mrs. Richardson otherwise ran the place. Bought a lot of comic books, bubble gum, and ice cream bars there as akid.

Now that I think more about it, the owners’ last name might have been Richards; I’m no longer sure.

by Dang Hu Dat on Jun 27, 2010 3:02 PM CDT up reply actions

You knew Alma Richards!? Well then this information just might interest you...

My store was indeed the Broadway Pharmacy and home to the first female pharmacist in the state of Lousiana, Alma Richards. I actually have her Louisiana pharmaceutical license dated from 1914 and a lot of their old books and tax returns from the 1920s and 30s.

She was very good friends with the famous politician, F. Edward Hebert, who started the Tulane Booster Club in this building and now has a building on Tulane’s campus named after him. Hebert had a regular column in The States-Item but supposedly, it was Alma who actually wrote the column under Hebert’s name.

The pharmacy was also where Dr. Ochsner would get his medicine. Now, Ochsner is the largest hospital in the state. And next week, they will be filming part of the new movie “Green Lantern” starting Ryan Reynolds right on our block.

Thanks

for clarifying the Richardson vs. Richards part of my memory. I only knew her as a kid who was a frequent customer, and she was already up in years (of course anyone over 30 seemed old to me as a kid). She was always friendly. F. Eddie was legendary. His district included part of downtown NOLA. Uptown was in the district represented by Hale Boggs. I once got to meet Dr. Alton Ochsner briefly when he gave a talk at my high school. I’m pretty sure the Ochsner family grew up in that general vicinity of uptown (I’m guessing somewhere between St. Charles & the river as I believe they attended Audubon for elementary school). That’s neat about the upcoming movie. Maybe you can make a brief appearance in it.

I remember it as Beebo's

1. When he was cut. Yeah, he was a great receiver, but I hate showboats. I much prefer the receivers we have now.

2. At Baltimore, late in the year. Super Bowl preview?

3. I’ll read Payton’s, maybe Drew’s.

4. Do you mean, ever? Maybe not…the Saints may kill him this time. Which means (if that’s what you’re asking) that yes, he will play in 2010.

5. I haven’t found it yet. Guess I’ll just have to keep looking. Would you believe I’ve never been to Liuzza’s, or Feelings, or Upperline, or Clancy’s? Hell, I’ve never even been to Brennan’s! I’ve got a lot of catching up to do.

On an unrelated note, does it seem to anyone else that I’m getting more crotchety lately?

It was worth the wait.

Happy anniversary!

1. In 2002, when we beat the eventual world champ Bucs for the second time that season, which was in the Dome on MNF and the Saints were wearing throwback jerseys. Towards the end, we needed just one 1st down to seal the win, but Brooks hurt his arm and had to come out. Jake Delhomme came in and threw a short 3rd down pass to Horn for the 1st down and the win. Horn dove for it and after the whistle was blown did a celebratory crawl forward on his belly and ended it by extending his arm to signal the 1st down. It was an exciting moment to an otherwise disappointing season. I have that game on VHS somewhere and think I’ll watch it again soon.

2. At Baltimore. Also tough will be at 49ers.

3. First Payton’s book and then Drew’s.

4. He’ll retire after this year. I’m expecting him to sustain an injury this year that breaks his streak and lands him on IR.

5. So many good ones, but I’ll choose Emeril’s.

Happy Anniversary Dave.

1. Meeting Joe after a game and having him take a pic with us.

2. At San Fran on MNF. I should be there, looking forward to it.

3. Probably none of the three for a while, maybe Payton’s eventually.

4. This will be his last year most likely, I think he’ll tank this year though.

5. Tough call, but I’ll go with Crazy Johnnies over in Fat City.

1.What was your favorite Joe Horn moment?
Cell Phone celebration

2.Which game on the Saints schedule do you think will be most difficult?
Ravens: It will be a cold game against a tough opponent on their home field. In addition it occurs later in the season where injuries could potentially play a factor more so than a earlier seasonal game.

3.Will you be reading any of the books being written by Sean Payton, Drew Brees and Jeff Duncan?
Bothe Payton’s book and Brees’ book.

4.Do you think Brett Favre will retire?
No way in hell. Not this season at least

5.What’s your favorite New Orleans restaurant?
I cannot remember the name of it, but there is a Sushi restaurant on St. Charles street close to Archi Manning’s house that I really like. I think it is close to Vodoo Barbacue.

When new orleans was evacuated due to hurricane Ike and what not, it was one of the first full blown restaurants to open.
There is also a pizza ria on magazine that is pretty good as well.

Happy Anniversary Dave & Erin!

1. Cellphone celebration. I typically dislike showboating, but that was a fantastic bit of showmanship, and as a musician, I have to respect it.

2. Tough call…opening night against the Whinequeens will be a test (however I think they’ll come out hot and pound ‘em), the Turkey Day Special in Dallas will be tough, but I’m going with the Ravens – away game against a strong AFC team in potentially bad/cold weather late in the season.

3. Payton’s for sure, Brees’ maybe, Duncan’s unlikely.

4. Die on the field. If I have my way, it’ll be 9.9.10. ;-)

5. It’s been a LONG time since I lived there (left in 1985), the closest I’ve lived since was in BR, but I did gig on Bourbon St. in the late 90’s…lessee…is Mike Anderson’s still there? Superior Grille? I’d go with Superior, loved the combo of Tex-Mex and Cajun.

Happy anniversary--enjoy the brunch!

1. December 2001 Falcons game. Big win for us and kept us looking good…until we lost four straight to end the season!
2. Minnesota opening game and Dallas Thanksgiving game…both look difficult
3. Probably so…possibly all of them (I’m a big reader!)
4. Eventually (ha!)
5. Depends on what I’m getting. Oysters at Drago’s, Po-boys at Parkway or R & O’s, Italian at Cafe Giovanni, or Creole at Tujague’s.

Ummmm Commanders [drooling]

Hope y’all got the turtle soup with sherry

1. I always loved Joe’s ‘throwing dice’ TD celebrations best. Also, I met him in Greenbay at the team hotel in 2005. He signed my #87 jersey and was really great with the fans. You got to love a guy who could make Aaron Brooks look good.

2. I’m a little concerned about the Ravens game on the road. Not too worried about the Cowpiles, because we’re due a little revenge. As far as the Vikes game, I wouldn’t want to play us with Drew and Payton having 7 months to prepare.

3. I’ve already ordered Payton and Brees’ books

4. Who gives a s*** about what redneck megalomaniac does? Just ignore him during the offseason and try to knock his old ass out during the game. The blueprint has been established.

5. That is a really tough question that I can’t begin to answer. First four that come to mind (but not necessarily the best): Antoine’s, Commander’s, Clancy’s, Mosca’s. We should do a separate permanent post just of good restaurants that we could all use as a reference guide.

2. Ravens game on the road—cold weather
3. heck yes…just gotta save up, and ill buy them.
4. no. he will play football till he is 72 and then get injured so bad that he cant walk.
5. i have no idea. i haven’t eaten in Louisiana before. heck, ive only been there 4 times, and 3 of those were for Saints games.

Happy Anniversary to y'all...

1) Joe Horn moment? I think the 4-TD component of the cell phone night was more meaningful to me than the celebration itself.

2) I think the Vikes game is the most challenging – we don’t know what kind of teams either squad will be bringing in, there will be much emotion (opening game of 2010, hanging the banner, NFCCG residuals, etc.). I’d love to see us win big and set the tone for the season, but I just don’t know what will happen, and as the buildup to the game has been coalescing since the schedule was announced in April, it puts the game in a whole different plane of existence than any other game of the season. It will be a testament game to our players and coaches ability to focus and stay on target…
Second most difficult game will be the one after the T-giving Day Massacre Crusade of the Cowboys by the Saints. We have to play the Bengals outdoors in Cincy in early December following another huge game. We’ll see indeed.

3) I bet I’ll read them all, but as of now I only have plans to purchase Payton’s.

4) He will retire at some point, yes. It may take a career-ending injury to seal the deal, since it seems that as long as he can walk and talk, he might play. I really don’t care either way.

5) Don’t really have one. Haven’t spent any real time in NO as an adult. I love fried shrimp po-boys and onion rings, boiled crawfish, roast beef po-boys, and I got some really good lost bread at a restaurant in the Quarter a few years back, but I can’t remember the name of the place.

Could it of been Royal Cafe’ on the corner of Royal and St. Peters, across from the A&P? I designed the recipe when I was the chef there.

I ran across a Rachael Ray receipe for lost bread.

I didn’t read it. I was afraid it would have portobello mushrooms and EVOO in it, like everything else she cooks!!!

My mom used to be able to whip up lost bread for six kids in about two minutes. It’s always been a kids favorite in our family.

Loaded Questions plus a Happy Anniversary

1. Cell phone game. Hands down.

2. Top 3 in this order: Vikings, Cowgirls, 49ers. I only say the Niners because its our first road game (and a MNF game) after a huge game with Minny. The layoff could help or hurt us.

3. I am planning on buying and reading all 3 of them

4. Don’t care but he will play this season

5. Now this is huge question. Everytime we went to NO, my dad took us to Morning Call which isn’t in NO, but whatever. For lunch its Central Grocery and then head up to Brocato’s for dessert. For dinner, I don’t know what to say. There are so many choices.

2. I think the most difficult game will be one I’m attending, the Thanksgiving Day game vs. the Cowgirls – short week and away from the Dome, could be a challenge.

PS. I may have an extra ticket to the game, so if you’re interested you can email me and be on the lookout for a FanPost in the near future.

3. I haven’t seen the ToC of any of the Saints books, so maybe.

4. Favre will retire eventually. This offseason, no. He’s coming back.

1. Anytime he shredded the Falcons. Never does get old.
2. Ravens in December. Road, cold weather versus a great defense when playoff spots and seeding will be at stake for both teams.
3. I haven’t decided yet, but Payton’s book sounds really interesting.

   1. Cell Phone of course. Am I the 500th person to say that?
   2. Opener vs Vikings. With Favre that is. Without Favre then Cowboys.
   3. I plan on getting the Sean Payton book.
   4. Eventually…I hope. I am starting to think he is a cyborg.
   5. I don`t go out much, so I would have to say either Lucy`s or Gordon Biersch

2. The Ravens.
3. Sean’s and possibly Drew’s.
4. Either retire or die. Not sure which will happen 1st.
5. It’s been a while and hard to limit, but I love the muffuletta’s at Central Grocery and the fish/seafood at GW Fin’s.

1. Don’t really have one favorite(because I can’t really remember any except for cell phone). I always thought Joe Horn was all around a good player.
2. I think the Dallas game. I’m pumped we will be on the Thanksgiving game, but it did ruin my shot seeing the Saints in Dallas in person for that game. I was hoping it was on a Sunday. I was planning to make the 3 hour trip to go see them.
3. I will wait for the movie and only if he has vampires.
4. I wish he would just go away.
5. Fast food:Bud’s Broiler or Popeyes; Po’boys: Come back Inn in Metarie( I have tried Mother’s and Parkway and I still prefer come back inn). Italian:Venezia then Brocato’s, fancy restaurant:Delmonico’s, Seafood: Acme, jaegers, and so many more.

1.
My favorite moment, and also on my birthday.
2. Difficult? The cowgirls game gets my vote too.
3. Brees, yes, others, no.
4. I wish he would retire, but I know he will be back.
5. Herbsaint is really great. Bring your spouse & the checkbook.

by pma on Jun 28, 2010 10:27 AM CDT reply actions

oh well.

1.What was your favorite Joe Horn moment?
Any time he caught a ball and didn’t immediately act like a moron afterward. Give me the Barry Sanders celebrations any day.

2.Which game on the Saints schedule do you think will be most difficult?
Falcons/Panthers. Division games always play tough for us, and our lack of run D versus these two run pounding teams isn’t favorable.

3.Will you be reading any of the books being written by Sean Payton, Drew Brees and Jeff Duncan?
Nope.

4.Do you think Brett Favre will retire?
Eventually sure. I mean you technically retire once you die right?

5.What’s your favorite New Orleans restaurant?
Unfortunately i haven’t been back to New Orleans since about 93 or 94. I couldn’t even tell you what is even still around from when i was there. But if you can find me a hole in the wall, run down, local eatery with an adouille po-boy I’d be in absolute heaven.

1. What was your favorite Joe Horn moment?
There was one play, pretty sure it was during the 2002 Pittsburgh game, where he caught the ball over the middle and jittered his feet for like two full seconds, before taking off for another 10 or 15 yards. Very out of character for him to hesitate like that, which made it even more fun to watch him fake the DB out of his shoes. I also enjoyed the time he flattened the referee on a wide open fly route versus the Panthers. Incomplete pass, but well worth the price of admission.

Which game on the Saints schedule do you think will be most difficult?
I’ll go with the Ravens. Baltimore’s passing game should be much improved this season. They already have a solid running game and defense. On top of which, it’s on the road. In December.

Will you be reading any of the books being written by Sean Payton, Drew Brees and Jeff Duncan?
Possibly Payton’s, though I’d much rather wait several years, so all of those “I remember that” moments can come rushing back.

Do you think Brett Favre will retire?
I think this will prove to be his last season upcoming.

What’s your favorite New Orleans restaurant?
Either Rocky & Carlos or Charlie’s Steak House, depending on how much I’m looking to spend.

I'll give this a try

1. Have to be the San Diego game in September of 2000. Horn tore up the Chargers, and caught the winning touchdown from Jeff Blake. That game kind of got Horn on track and he broke the single season yardage record that year.
2. I think the Dallas game will be the toughest because it comes late enough in the season that Dallas will have screwed up enough games to be desperate, and they do at least have talent.
3. Might get the Peyton book, not sure yet.
4. I think that Superbowl commercial with him holding the 2020 Superbowl MVP trophy says it all about him. He is going to play as long as someone will let him or he can stand. (I am hoping he gets knocked around pretty good in the first game of the year though).
5. Have to say I am a Ralph and Kacoo’s fan myself, though I haven’t lived in New Orleans in 20 years. For po boys, I am going to have to go with Teddy’s Grill on Franklin Ave.

Welcome to CSC! Can you tell me what a “compiler” does? And in Call of Duty, why don’t the Japanese soldiers have faces?

by stujo4 on Jun 28, 2010 1:24 PM CDT up reply actions

A compiler takes source code and translates it into an executable binary file that can be read by a machine. Japanese soldiers in Call of Duty do not have faces, because the programmers thought it was best to not “humanize” the enemy.

Here's my shot

1. Gotta say the cell phone touchdown. The media pretty much ignored us all the time but that touchdown made Sportscenter.
2. The Vikings game will be really tough. National audience, Vikings revenge, Favre is back for another thumping.
3. I will be reading EVERY book about the Saints. ‘Nuf said.
4. Bretty has already said he wants another shot at the Saints. I say we show him why he should have retired.
5. My wife and I came back to Nawlins last year to celebrate our 24th wedding anniversary and ate at Commanders. Used to love the Palace Grill on Canal, but it seemed a bit off it’s game last year.

My wife just handed me a steaming hot bowl of red beans and rice with andouille. Do you know how hard it is to find andouille in Oklahoma? I’m a lucky man. Geaux Saints!!

lol...

I just had red beans and rice too!

Do you know how hard it is to find Blue Runner red beans in Dallas? (They used to have them at my Walmart. I thought it was a mirage. Now they don’t carry them anymore.)

I buy a case whenever I go home for a visit.

Every time we’re in the Gulf Coast area, we stock up on Community Coffee Nawlins Blend. When we moved back to Oklahoma 8 years ago, we cleaned off the shelf at the Walmart in Hattiesburg! People looked at us like we were crazy. They are starting to stock it now up here, but it’s kinda spotty, there one week, gone the next.

Congrats!

We will be celebrating our 5th in Nola this year yay!

1. Can’t answer
2. Minnesota then Dallas…I think most know how I feel about the Cowgirls. We HAVE to pulverize them or I will have it rubbed in my face for a year.
3. Yes Brees & Payton’s books
4. No
5. Probably the Gumbo House b/c they have a vegetarian option every day. I was able to eat red beans & rice instead of picking apart the menu. The south is not the best with vegetarian options, except for hippy Austin, Tejas.
