Saints state of the team address - QB

When talking about the Saints QB situation, I think Saints and non-Saints fans will agree that the when it comes to Drew Brees the Saints have a QB that epitomizes the prototypical NFL spokesman.  Drew's on the field accolades are clearly documented - 2nd highest season passing yardage total, highest single season passing percentage in NFL history and not to mention a Superbowl MVP.  His many off the field contributions are now well documented as a result of his on the field successes.  He is a leader in the community and his charitable contributions are second to none.  Every team in the league would be lucky to have a Drew Brees at the helm.  To address the QB position though you have to assume the unthinkable --- INJURY UGH!!!!

With Mark Brunell apparently not going to be on the roster, the Saints have a huge whole at the back-up spot.  The Saints currenlty have a truck load of un-proven, un-tested talent, but as we all know unrealized potential is about as worthless as a paper bag with with a hole in the bottom.  For this reason, I believe the saints would be well served in going after a quality back-up with NFL experience.  Joey Harrington, Marc Bulger and even Brunell would be a welcome sight to see on the bench.  For those that have voiced the opinion that Jamarcus Russell would look good in black and gold, I say that the Saint's prefer not to have players that have a potential pin striped uniform in their immediate future or rencent past.

So with all that said, I put it to you fellow Saints fans....Please let me know what you think!

Joey Harrington, Marc Bulger and even Brunell would be a welcome sight to see on the bench.

Harrington is currently working as a radio analyst for FOX Sports radio for both college football and the NFL.

On June 23, 2010, Bulger reached an agreement with the Baltimore Ravens on a one-year, $3.8 million deal along with incentives.

Brunell is a bankrupt bum who will probably end up with the Jets.

Saints beat reporter Brian Allee-Walsh confirms that the team is expected to sign free agent Patrick Ramsey before training camp.
The New Orleans Times-Picayune hinted as much in a Sunday afternoon column. The move would likely leave rookie Sean Canfield to battle Chase Daniel for the third quarterback spot. Ramsey signed with the UFL’s Omaha Nighthawks at the start of the month, but isn’t obligated to honor the deal.

Culpepper is a choice idiot.

Ever since his knee went out he’s lost his ability to throw the long ball. And his short game was never all that impressive. I truly believe he was created by Tice’s liine and Carter and Moss. Without them he’s yet to have even a halfway decent year.

Instead you should look at Tarvaris Jackson!

Horrible Idea

If we wanted a back up with the qualities that Jackson possesses, I am sure we would have went for Tim Tebow.

Patrick Ramsey and Josh Mccown

are both viable options imo. I’m sure I’ll be in the minority on Mccown, but he actually has more starting experience than Ramsey. He actually has pretty decent stats as well, for a backup anyway.

I’d definitely prefer McCown over Ramsey. In fact, that’s who I thought the Saints were going to go after in 2006, when Payton first got here. Only because I didn’t think we had a shot in hell of landing Brees, considering the disarray of the franchise at the time.

While Russel is big enough to be an offensive tackle I don’t think he has the nuts for it. However a fumblerooskie that turns into an interception would be pretty much pat for the guy. I think I was agreeing with you.

Honestly you should ask Warner to come back and play for you all. Chances are he’ll never see the field he’ll make some money and if he does play you have an all star back up.

I don't think it really matters that much.

Garcia is a hardcore competitor. I would expect he has stayed in pretty good football shape for his age.

Really the only thing I think about when considering a backup is who would be best to come in for 4 games out of the year, and potentially the playoffs. If Brees is out for any more than 4 games I’m probably going to call the season a wash anyway.

Garcia certainly has enough left to handle 4 games a year. He’s a better passer than both McCown and Ramsey, has loads more starting experience, and playoff victories on top of that. You could put a lot of guys behind our line, with our offense, and have them be successful to a point, Garcia has what it takes to excel.

“You could put a lot of guys behind our line, with our offense, and have them be successful to a point, Garcia has what it takes to excel.”

I don’t disagree with this, I just think both Culpepper and McCown would bring more to the table in this particular offense than Garcia would. Ramsey would be a distant fourth. As in, I don’t even see him as an upgrade over Brunell, except maybe in terms of being able to take punishment.

that could be true, but how much do you think he’s really going to demand after being out of football for so long? That, coupled with the opportunity to get back in the NFC South and kick some ass on the defending Super Bowl Championship team, I think makes it more than plausible.

I’ve always liked Garcia, he has always been solid under pressure, able to make game changing plays in the crunch, a very pure passer, with a great football IQ. I do agree that McCown has a lot of upside though. Maybe throwing him behind Drew for a couple years would turn him into a potential starter. Develop him and he may be worth some draft picks….

This is all useless banter anyway if everything I’ve read is even halfway accurate. Ramsey is all but inked in I guess.

by 10up on Jul 12, 2010 3:25 PM CDT up reply actions

I know. But Garcia would have preseason and hopefully well into the season to get re-accustomed.

Its just that Garcia has proven more recently that he’s still capable of putting together a run and getting into the playoffs, with the Eagles in 2006. Garcia is more mobile and will get out of more sacks and bad situations than Cullpepper, and probably avoid an injury. I think its more critical to make the shorter passes, whcih we do a lot of along with some longer balls, in our offense. We thrive because of accurate passing. In the latter parts of their careers, Garcia’s completion % has gone up while Cullpepper’s has gone down, while both of them have been on bad teams. I think it woul dbe best to have a backup that resembled Drew’s talents so that we wouldn’t have to alter the gameplan as drastically, sticking with what we have perfected.

Payton: Drew, what do you think about us maybe approaching Jeff Garcia to be your backup?

Brees: (frowns during long pause) Uh, he’d want quite a lot of money, wouldn’t he? Does Mr. Benson really want to pay more than he did to Brunell? I mean, really, ha ha. Up side is, we can relax a little on the staph infection front. Down side… well, Jeff is just so keen about everything.

Payton: Got it. I’ll tell Mickey to go ahead and pull the trigger on the Ramsey kid.

Of course not that is a totally different matter,

but is the small possibility of such an event coming up, along with the assumption that some of those veteran backups might not be available at the time of need anyway, worth asking an already penny-pinching front office to fork over more money right now? They already seem unwilling to pay the players we KNOW we need! I’m just factoring that in and saying that right here, right now, hell yes, go with what we’ve got.

Who dat, from a cajun exiled to cowboy country.

by alcoholic_insight on Jul 15, 2010 10:44 AM CDT up reply actions

Well, if you don’t intend to address the problem, until the problem arises, then you’r eright, it probably makes little difference. In that case, it comes down to a QB with no game experience that knows the playbook, versus a veteran QB with game experience that doesn’t know the playbook. A more diligent approach at least imo, would be to bring in the veteran QB with game experience NOW. Only then would you gain an advantage, if and when Brees were to go down. As far as the odds of something like that happening, I think it’s a lot greater than anyone cares to admit. How many starting QBs play 16 games from one season to the next? I would estimate it’s less than half on average. It’s foolish to rely that heavily on any one player, no matter who it is. Especially when you have other options. The fact remains, the longer the Saints wait, the fewer options they’re ultimately affording themselves in that particular situation.

You surely realize this is a joke by now, so I expect laghter and light hearted ribbing for such an insane idea.

rotoworld.com:

Michael Vick-QB- Eagles Jul. 13 – 10:15 pm et Citing sources familiar with the Eagles’ decision-making process, FoxSports.com’s Adam Caplan reports the team would only cut ties with Michael Vick if he “forced them to do so” by lying about his involvement in Quan Phillips’ shooting. Yahoo! Sports reported Sunday that the option of cutting Vick was “absolutely” a possibility, but the Philadelphia Daily News has consistently stated the Eagles are keeping their backup QB. It seems obvious at this point that some in the front office want Vick out, but at least one strong voice (Andy Reid?) has objections due to the time and money already invested. Reid reportedly considers Vick a valuable asset and has plans to increase his utilization of the Wildcat offense this season.
