CSC All-Time Saints Team Nominations: Free Safety
Are you excited? We've almost reached the end of our all-time Saints team selection process. In fact, today's nomination post for our all-time free safety will close out the defensive side of the ball.
To get the ball rolling I've nominated just two players, Gene Atkins and Tommy Myers, both of whom were included in our earlier strong safety election but played significant time at free safety as well. There stats are included after the jump to help you make a more informed decision.
The poll will open at 6am Central tomorrow morning and will be open for exactly 48 hours, ending on Wednesday, July 21st.
I now open it up for any other nominations of players that you just can't believe I missed or to have one of the players listed below removed from tomorrows ballot. There very well may be a glaring omission and we could use another option or two. Talk it out below. I would also love to hear some personal rumination from our readers who've actually watched these guys play. Remember, this isn't just about choosing a player but allowing readers to share their memories of these players and educating those of us who never had a chance to see them.

well, I was writing a reason why to nominate him.

I almost did earlier as a joke
Not that Sharper is a joke or anything, but he’s only played one season with us. It was indeed a great season, but I can’t see voting him in at this time. Down the road and next year, there will be opportunities to vote replacement members for the CSC All-Time team once a current Saint’s career ends and then justifies it. That will be the time to consider Sharper. Right now, I’m leaning Myers.

“Down the road and next year, there will be opportunities to vote replacement members for the CSC All-Time team”
Is that the official line, Mr Dave?
If so, I’d be fine with voting for someone else right now.

Come on...
Sharper has more interceptions than both of these guys combined. Sharper will eventually be in the NFL hall of fame. He had more touchdowns than both of these guys in one year.

You mean he did more in 1 season than these guys did in 17?

Are you saying Sharper played in 244 games, started 209 games, recorded 8 sacks (unofficially more), picked off 58 INTs, returned them for 946 yds, scored 3 TDs, forced 12 fumbles, recovered 29 fumbles and racked up 463 tackles (unofficially far more), all in 2009?

I think that after he did all this in 2009, he was named Time's Man of the Year, right?

no way
Sharper…nomination for all-time Saints team? after one season? Maybe after 4 seasons with those continued INTs, I would be all for it. TD returns are nice and all, but considering the gunslinger we have already….a TD off of a turnover is almost absolute.

Voting for Tommy

I like Gene Atkins
But Tommy’s in the Saints Hall of Fame. Has to be Tom Myers.
We lost a wheel in Santa Cruz, so we partied with some motel maids
My friend said "I don’t like mine, so whaddya say we trade?"
Myers stands one INT shy of Waymer’s team record and he played in 13 fewer games, with far less defensive talent around him.

ya but int record is a low number to begin with that shouldn’t be a relevant stat. and btw Sharper has a fourth less int’s and played nine less years.

I like that one – football cards are cool – I have a small collection from the late 80’s early 90’s and Saints team sets from 2006-2009 (need to save up my $$ to order my 2010 Saints set…)

Still
This reminds me of my frustrations with our effed up US election system, especially for president. They make it so difficult for people to get onto the ballot and, when they do in some states, it sometimes is in a way that confuses the voter. The whole damn thing is rigged, I tells ya! So, because of that, I retract my “No” above and say yes if enough people, a number decided by Dave, think he should be on the ballot. I can only hope that the majority decide his one good year with us doesn’t yet justify their vote.
I think 10 would be a good number for Sharper nominations. If at least that many want him on the ballot, then put him on there.

Ummm...No
I can understand why folks would want him on the ballot, and it’s not just because he was a member of the Super Bowl winning team. When you look at his entire body of work, Sharper is obviously a great safety. But since this is an All-Time SAINTS list, I’d have to say no, only because he’s had just one year with the team. If he does just as well this year, we can talk…

If it was possible I would want every Saints that played FS on the list
but I sure don’t think anyone outside the two put up should get any of the votes.
Pre-reply
Yeah, yeah, Bullocks too. I just think that if its All-time Saints, there’s nothing wrong for getting to vote for all of them.
Post-pre reply
It’s not practical. I’m not telling you to do that, Dave. That would be dumb. But morally okay.
90% of his picks...
against unexperienced QB and downhill carreer before he played 8 ganes for the Saints?
Pass….
Repeat? Under construction...
As I’ve pointed out several times prior, how is it even fair that Sharper is getting consideration based on what transpired in 2009? That’s not something EVERY 2009 player was afforded. Were Colston’s 2009 statistics taken into account, when he got beaten by both Martin and Horn? Suppose Heath Evans had paved the way for 2,500 rushing yards by Reggie Bush. Every one of his lead blocks were pancakes. He also rushed for 1,000 yards of his own, reeled in 65 receptions for another 1,000 yds and scored 28 all-purpose TDs on the season, shattering the NFL record. Guess what? He would have no place on this all-time team. Why? Because the FB slot had already been filled, before Evans was ever on the team. Sharper’s being given an unfair advantage over his fellow first year Saint, simply because Dave arbitrarily choose to hold off on the FS position.

Good argument
Also, almost every “All-Time” award has a waiting period before induction. Even the Catholic Church has a 5 year waiting period before investigating whether or not to even think about canonizing someone as a saint. Shouldn’t we have similar rules for our Saints?

whats the waiting period on being deemed a molester?
LOL sorry, just had to throw that joke out there. I’ll be good Dave and to others I know I shouldn’t have.

YES!!
sharper has to be in it. it’s as simple as can be, he won a super bowl and the others didn’t. how can he not be on it
The same reason Jonathan Goodwin wasn’t on the center ballot. And before you’re quick to point out the contributions of Sharper to the 2009 team, please keep in mind …
it's SIMPLY the Super Bowl that matters.

Sparper is in the
top 5 safeties right now. Right now he plays for the Saints. Last year 70 tackles, 1 safety, 9 int; 3 ret for td, one was for a Saints record 99 yards. Right now he can’t even get on the ballot?

I think Tebucky Jones and Dwight Smith should be on the list
We could put Josh Bullocks and Kevin Kaesviharn on the list too. HAHA just kidding
Peyton, I can eat Oreos faster than you!!!!
We should change the name
to CSC’s All Time Saints Team w/2yr exp or more

Btw, I don’t feel as though this is the same situation as Eric Allen. First Allen played three seasons for the Saints, not one. Second, in the three seasons he played for New Orleans, Allen never missed a game. Sharper has missed two in the one season he’s been here. Third, Allen’s inclusion ultimately costed Mike McKenzie a spot. McKenzie only played 68 games as a Saint. Sharper’s inclusion would ultimately cost Tommy Myers a spot, one of the biggest defensive contributors in franchise history over exactly TWICE as many games.

Some thought about the ballot process:
I liken this to our American election system. Many people are free to try to run for office, but there are typically minimum age & residency requirements. We appear to have the equivalent of residency requirements at CSC, & I think that’s appropriate. The requirements just don’t seem to be officially stated. My assumption is that, by consensus, a single year as a Saint is not long enough. BTW, I also assume that we are not automatically electing anyone to lifetime terms in office. Some may stay on the roster forever if no one better ever comes along, but chances are some should eventually be replaced as better candidates come along, or history shows other players may have been better than the ones previosly elected. But this is not officially stated either. As an all-time roster, we ought to re-visit it from time to time, but I don’t know how frequently. The examples from the American system include every 2, 6, or 6 years.

Glad all this went down during the weekend when i was recovering from a car wreck. Think i got a little sick to my stomach looking through this thread.
jeff, I hope you’re feeling better. Beware the whiplash, it can manifest itself weeks or months after the accident. Totally serious.
Good times are comin',

Yea, i got rear ended when i was in a turn lane and some guy was looking through his CDs and drifted into my lane rear-ending me at almost 50mph. Got checked out by the docs, seem to be all right. Can’t say the same about my vehicle. I guess paying a boat load in insurance will finally pay off.
hang in there, Jeff!!! We're all hoping for the best for you.
