CSC All-Time Saints Team Election: Free Safety

The moment has arrived to finish out the defensive side of our CSC all-time Saints team by voting for the final open position, free safety. Just in case you missed the nomination post yesterday, get yourself caught up right here.

Based on your discussions yesterday, the overwhelming majority seem to feel Darren Sharper should not be included on the ballot. With no strong support for any other player nominations, the ballot will remain unchanged leaving only Tommy Myers and Gene Atkins to choose from.

The polls are officially open and will remain so for exactly 48 hours which means they will close at 6am on Wednesday, July 21st. You only get one vote so make it count. You can make a difference. If you've never voted in a CSC poll to date, now is the perfect time to start. Be sure to tell everyone you know to come on over and vote as well.

As always, the comment section is open for more discussion about these great players and the way things used to be.

First!

Gene Atkins was a fine player, but Tommy Myers deserves this. No brainer.

Nice showing for Gene, but fait accompli.

I vote for Myers, I don’t think Gene was a bad player but Tommy deserves it.

Sharper!

Ha ha, just kidding. I don’t think he would have won anyway, but I wouldn’t have had a problem with him being on the ballot. Doesn’t really matter anyway. Tommy is deserving and I voted for him and will again unless Sharper plays another 3-5 yrs with the Saints and has results like this past years performances. Then it might be a contest.

riiiight

yeah, i’m gonna go ahead and vote for Darren Sharper…and p.s. are you freaking kidding me? i’ve only been watching the saints since 1990…Darren Sharper made INT’s and scored TD’s…the only FS in my fanhood life to consistently do it…this shouldn’t even be a question

by A DOG NAMED DEUCE on Jul 19, 2010 11:45 AM CDT reply actions

By consistently

You mean that he made ints and returned them for tds for only 1 season? Is that consistency? Oh. And his level of play dropped as the season wore on. I do understand that injuries played a role in Sharper not being able to get ints

by Ezio_Auditore on Jul 19, 2010 12:20 PM CDT via mobile up reply actions

When Sharper gets more than 36 INTs in his career as a Saint then I’ll talk about him being more deserving of the spot than Tommy Myers.

I wasn’t around for Tommy Myers…quick question, what was the Saints record while he was manning center field? i’m big on averages…like Sharper’s average total for INT’s and TD’s per season as a Saint…..

by A DOG NAMED DEUCE on Jul 20, 2010 12:10 PM CDT up reply actions

That would be fine, if the two were in the same ballpark, as far as number of years played. You can’t possibly go by averages with that small of a sample. Regardless of team, how many player in the league have EVER averaged what Sharper managed last season over a 10 year stretch? Paul Krause, the NFL career leader in INTs, averaged 9.125 INTs per season over 16 seasons. That’s just barely nudging past Sharper’s one year totals. Conversely, you have forgotten players that have tallied 9 or more INTs pretty much every season, throughout history. Hell, just this past season, three other guys equalled Sharper’s mark, including Jairus Byrd. Do you think Jairus Byrd would be in the running for All-Time greatest Bills FS? Better question: do you think anyone will know who the eff Jairus Byrd is, 43 years from now? If I had to guess, he’s a flash in the pan performer, who will go on to have a so-so career, probably with another NFL team. And no one outside of Buffalo will remember him. Which is pretty much what you have today in Dave Whitsell as a Saint. Which is pretty much what you WOULD have in Sharper, if you flipped those 43 years of history on its head, like an hourglass and ignored his non-Saints career.

I think we'll end up with around 250 people voting for this one

and 500+ voting for Brees and Deuce soon

We’ve already seen CP’s QB list, so here’s my RB list of finalists:
George Rogers
Chuck Muncie
Reuben Mayes
Dalton Hilliard
Deuce McAllister

And Deuce will be the winner.

Of these, Tony Galbreath is not mentioned and should be, he’s in the Saints HoF.

Chuck Muncie
and his eyeglasses, in defiance of Coach Stram’s edict that he be fitted for contacts, is not in the Saints HoF and shouldn’t be, and should not be on the list. His numbers aren’t that great and I’m annoyed by the reverential treatment he gets here on CSC. My impression is that he was and is hostile to New Orleans and the Saints organization. Not a guy to honored.

I disagree. I think it’s a travesty that he isn’t in the Saints HOF. First 1000 yd rusher in team history, 1st Pro Bowl RB, 1st Pro Bowl MVP, led the team in rushing three times, something only McAllister and Rogers have exceeded, franchise’s all time leading rusher and TD scorer at the time he left.

Also, Pete Finney has called Muncie the most athletic player in team history and he’s on the HOF selection committee, so I would think he knows a thing or two about what it takes to be “great”.

by coldpizza on Jul 20, 2010 12:54 AM CDT up reply actions

Mr. Finney has seen a lot of Saints games over a long period of time. That’s why he’s on the committee. Certainly not because of his journalistic acuity, or his ability to size up talent.

Hence, Muncie is not in the Saints HoF. Cooler heads have prevailed.

Good times are comin',
but they sure comin' slow.

I knew you would. Mine point is purely subjective. That and few remember him as a Saint. Damned few.

by stujo4 on Jul 20, 2010 2:41 PM CDT up reply actions

Good list. I would add Mario Bates, Ricky Williams and Tony Galbreath. Galbreath was already included with the FBs, so that one’s a bit debatable. Bates and Williams each led the team in rushing three times. That’s more than Hilliard or Mayes and equal to Muncie. Like him or not, Ricky was the face of the franchise during his years here and started over Deuce. He’s also the only back with consecutive 1,000 yd seasons besides McAllister and the first Saints back to do so. He can’t possibly be excluded, imo.

when Muncie was on our team I was a kid (born in 1971)

I had no idea he was involved with cocaine or anything like that until my Dad told me (after we traded him) that he had trouble with “putting stuff up his nose” and I had no idea what he meant by that.
