I was listening to Bobby Hebert on WWL talk about how USC really doesn’t want anything to do with Reggie. Sad really. It’s like he doesn’t have a home anymore.

And, I heard they are also removing his jersey’s and other pictures of him from their trophy case.

actually, usc is giving back their heisman
there are two heisman trophys each year, one for the school and one for the player. the only person who can give reggie’s heisman back is reggie.

True, almost
This isn’t Reggie’s Heisman. He still has the real one. USC is just giving back the copy they kept in their awards cabinet. I say almost true because the Heisman Trophy Trust or Committee or whatever can still take Reggie’s trophy back if they decide to do that. Based on what I’m reading around the web, it seems unlikely they will.

they can ask for it back
but i don’t think they can kick down his door and take it. vince young has already said he will decline it if it is offered to him.

I don’t mind him being around this year so much. Nor any year, if the money is just going to sit in Tom Benson’s billfold, otherwise.

I posted this in another thread...
The NCAA required USC disassociate from Reggie Bush. The "symbolic" gesture of removing the Heisman from Heritage Hall and returning it to the Heisman Trust is part of that disassociation.
Reggie was deemed ineligible for the 2005 season…they season in which he won it. So why would the school continue to recognize it? I doubt the Heisman Trust will take it away…they didn’t take Charles Woodson’s away and it was found that he took money from an agent while at UM.
And frankly the Heisman is an overrated award anyway…
"Mention USC to a Bruin and they get angry; mention UCLA to a Trojan and they laugh."
Woops. I was wrong Hans
Well the NFL, SAINTS, and ESPY’s will still associate with him. Your loss NCAA and USC.
I didn’t know that about Charles Woodson. Yeah they can’t take Reggie’s then if they didn’t take his. Do you know if Michigan returned his heisman?

The Bush investigation is one of those situations where everyone and every institution involved in it looks bad for the way it was handled…. Reggie, the thug who orchastrated the payments, Reggie’s parents, the NCAA, etc., but especially Pete Carrol and USC. If they weren’t at least “suspicious” of what was going on, they’re idiots. They chose to look the other way because the benefits outweighed the risk.
Pete Carrol says with a straight face his going to Seattle had “nothing to do with the investigation”. He must think all football fans are idiots.
On a positive note however, USC still gets to show off O.J.’s Heisman and their new whore coach got screwed instead of being the one doing the screwing.
Hmmmm...
but especially Pete Carrol and USC. If they weren’t at least "suspicious" of what was going on, they’re idiots. They chose to look the other way because the benefits outweighed the risk.
What would you propose they do? Track every players parents financial standing? Would you not consider that an invasion of privacy? This wasn’t some booster trying get Reggie to come to USC this was Reggie’s dad and a wannabe agent messing with Reggie’s eligibility after he was already enrolled.
Should SC have monitored things better WRT to his internship with Mike Ornstein? Yeap.
Should the compliance department done a better job of due diligence in looking into Reggie’s car? Absolutely!
But I hardly call Pete Carroll an idiot because of those transgressions.
Interesting…Not sure who Kiffin screwed. He is no different than UCLA’s Ben Howland leaving Pitt for UCLA one year into a 7 year contract.
Howland said this…
“There is no place I would rather be coaching than UCLA," said the 50-year-old Howland. "This has always been my dream job. I grew up a Bruin basketball fan and it still is hard for me to believe that I am the caretaker of the program that Coach Wooden built.–UCLAbruins.com
Funny Kiffin said the same thing about ’SC being his dream job…but has been castigated repeatedly for it.
Whore coach? You mean like the former coach in Baton Rouge who is now in Tuscaloosa via Miami. The same coach who said he wasn’t interested in taking the Alabama job but did just that a mere couple of days/weeks later.
Not sure about Carroll reason for departing…but I learned long ago when they say it isn’t about the money you know it is about the money…you can use the same rationality here…
I think it is great that Saints fans have rallied around Reggie Bush. It is clear that he has embraced every aspect of the city and its fan base. But you guys aren’t left to carry this bag of crap that Reggie and his family left on ’SC’s doorstep…so I hope you will excuse me and understand if I am not on the Reggie Bandwagon…
"Mention USC to a Bruin and they get angry; mention UCLA to a Trojan and they laugh."
Hmmm.... part II
I understand and respect your loyalty and defense of USC. I would do the same for LSU.
Your school, particularly the players and fans, got screwed. No debate. No argument.
However, I’m less understanding of your defense of Pete Carroll and the athletic compliance department. My comment that Pete Carroll is an idiot if he wasn’t “at least suspicious of what was going on” was meant to serve as reason he had to have been suspicious as he clearly is not an idiot.
In a recent interview on “Real Sports”, Carroll said “Reggie was like a son to me”. If that’s true, you would certainly think he was aware Bush was from a non-affluent background… that is step father was a security guard… that he was driving an old, beat up truck….that his family was on the verge of being evicted, etc., etc.
In the same interview when Carroll was asked why he wasn’t “suspicious” about the new car, his response was to exclaim “It was a Chevrolet!!!” as though nothing less than a Ferrari should raise a red flag. Carroll went on to say “I kidded Reggie his new car was old fashioned”. The “old fashioned” vehicle was a new $40,000 Impala Super Sport with $8,000 worth of after-market up-grades. The car and Reggie were on the cover of some “pimp your ride” auto magazine. You don’t really believe that is a believable explanation by Carroll for having not been suspicious, do you?
Carroll, or someone from the compliance department, must have certainly noticed over a three year period that Bush’s parents attended all of the away games. Even if they didn’t know Reggie’s step father retired from his security guard position and moved his family into a home valued at over $750,000, the other “clues” alone would have been picked up by anyone except possibly Inspector Clouseau.
You indicate you’re “not sure who Kiffin screwed”. Ask anyone in Tennessee and and they’ll be happy to explain it to you. Regarding your comment “Whore coach? You mean like the former coach in Baton Rouge?”…… I truly didn’t mean to be that critical of Kiffin. Nick Saban has a special place in the Whore Coach Hall of Fame no one can rival.
I agree with you that money played a major role in Carroll’s decision to leave. But, it wasn’t the first time he had been courted to return to the NFL. Since we agree Carroll is anything but an idiot, he had to have known the hammer was about to come down from the four year NCAA investigation. Even if he thought the penalties wouldn’t be as big as they were, the post-sanction era would have greatly hampered his negotiating position to go elsewhere. But, maybe it was just a coincidence he left when he did.
Your info is a little off...
However, I’m less understanding of your defense of Pete Carroll and the athletic compliance department. My comment that Pete Carroll is an idiot if he wasn’t "at least suspicious of what was going on"
He addressed it (in the interview you referenced)…thought the compliance office did their job…obviously not the case. That story is not fully told yet. The NCAA may have made a significant mistake on this…I am working on it…I address it here and here.
In the same interview when Carroll was asked why he wasn’t "suspicious" about the new car, his response was to exclaim "It was a Chevrolet!!!" as though nothing less than a Ferrari should raise a red flag.
Guess you haven’t been to ‘SC much. It’s a private school where tuition is $45-50K a year…before expenses many of the kids drive higher end cars…BMW’s, Mercedes and even Porche’s…it is not out of place at all…a ’96 Impala will be missed regardless of it being pimped out.
Carroll went on to say "I kidded Reggie his new car was old fashioned". The "old fashioned" vehicle was a new $40,000 Impala Super Sport with $8,000 worth of after-market up-grades.
Nope… it was a ’96 Impala blue-booked around 15K (page 16 of the COI report). The version of the car you saw on the cover of the Magazine was AFTER he left school and he put a very expensive paint job on it. The place he went to specializes in that sort of work, it is in San Pedro, CA very near where I grew up, and it is big car area…Agree on the 8k of upgrades (rims, sound, alarm etc.)
So yes, a ’96 impala that had some new rims at SC is not going to draw much if any attention…even if it driven by Reggie Bush.
someone from the compliance department, must have certainly noticed over a three year period that Bush’s parents attended all of the away games
Nope, Bush’s parents did not attend all the away games. They attended the The BCS title game in Jan 2005 (page 15 of the COI report). During the 2005 season they attended the Hawaii, Cal and Arizona games (page 16 of the COI report). That is certainly not three years worth of games, but in the end it doesn’t matter, one game or twenty., Reggie’s family was dirty.
Even if they didn’t know Reggie’s step father retired from his security guard position and moved his family into a home valued at over $750,000, the other "clues" alone would have been picked up by anyone except possibly Inspector Clouseau.
Again, it was in San Diego. Should the school be traveling around the country checking up on all of the players parents living arrangements? Like I said, it is an invasion of privacy and wholly unrealistic. To My knowledge, players are not required to inform the school of their parents living arrangements.
You indicate you’re "not sure who Kiffin screwed". Ask anyone in Tennessee and and they’ll be happy to explain it to you.
See my quote above about dream jobs…UT is ecstatic to have Dooley! So why continue to obsess with the past…says more about them than it does Kiffin.
Don’t disagree…when Carroll said it wasn’t about the sanctions…I had no doubt that it was. All the coaches say and do this or something similar.
I was happy about Reggie getting a ring. but the facts are the facts and Reggie has done nothing to refute them with any evidence to the contrary. Whether I like it or not, the removal of the Heisman (read disassociation), while wholly symbolic, is a requirement from the NCAA. The new president is going the extra step of removing any and all images or affiliations of Reggie Bush and OJ Mayo. The new president takes USC athletics and their traditions seriously. You don’t find that too often in University Presidents.
Final thought…I appreciate the mods letting me voice my take on this. My intent is not to flame or troll…I loved Reggie when he was at USC but his actions have irreparably damaged USC’s image and athletic tradition as well as the good will and support that the USC faithful gave Reggie throughout this ordeal.
I am ecstatic for NOLA for their rebound from Katrina and the happiness that you have gained in winning the Super Bowl…no one deserves it more.
I totally understand and accept your fanbase’s support of Reggie…we from the USC side unfortunately have little in terms of good will to offer Reggie because of this.
I wish you guys luck next season and hope you repeat. We still love Billy Miller, Big Sed and Charles Brown…
Thanks
"Mention USC to a Bruin and they get angry; mention UCLA to a Trojan and they laugh."
dude, my roommate had a pimped out car of the same class with kits and everything...
and he was totally broke! Doesn’t mean much! It is just a chevrolet, cheap and easily upgradeable. He just put what he had into it. Even if the coach had his suspicions he probably thought to himself it was best he didn’t find out…
Don't worry I got your back cuz...
Thanks for making my point...
As soon as Reggie tells us where he got the money to trick it out we’ll have all the answers. It’s clear his parents didn’t have the money they defaulted on the rental agreement with Lloyd lake…that’s what started this whole thing rolling..
I get it…you really don’t care about this. He helped you get a ring, you guys hate ’SC because most of you are LSU fans.
That’s cool…
We lived this for 4 +years so we have a different take and much more vested in this.
"Mention USC to a Bruin and they get angry; mention UCLA to a Trojan and they laugh."
You said it wasn’t your intent to “inflame or troll”. I never got that impression to begin with. Likewise, it wasn’t my intent to antagonize you. If I did, I apologize. I know this whole thing has been very painful for Trojan fans.
But just to make sure we’re on the same page:
I’ve never dismissed or excused what Reggie did. To my knowledge at least, neither has anyone else at CSC.
I don’t think it’s accurate to assume that “you guys hate ’SC because most of you are LSU fans.” Most LSU fans reserve such a strong emotion for Alabama, other SEC rivals or, at least, someone we actually play. We were a little annoyed over the “shared” championship claim, but it hasn’t even been a topic of conversation for a long time.
Regarding Kiffin, I think we’ll just have to agree to disagree. I’m certainly not “obsessing with the past” as I don’t even like Tennessee. But in my mind, what’s right is right. Perhaps I’m naive, but I hold a college football coach dealing with young athletes to a higher standard than most professions. Kiffin didn’t even address his players before sneaking out of town. While the “dream job” explanation might work elsewhere, he knew it would only elicit blank stares from the team that had put their faith in him during his short tenure at Tennessee. If such harsh sanctions had to happen to a head coach, I’d rather it be Kiffin than someone else. That’s just my opinion.
I think all Saints fans can fully appreciate why USC fans have a strong resentment towards Reggie at this stage. However, while it’s not at all hard to understand your feelings, I’m certain the vast majority of people in New Orleans will continue to support him through a difficult period. Partly because it’s in the best interest of our team to do so. But just as much because, as you said, he “clearly has embraced every aspect of the city and the fan base”. He’s one of us now, warts and all. And, despite poor decisions made at USC, he hasn’t done anything detrimental to us. There’s been a lot said and written about it over the past year, but Saints fans have known it all along…… there really is a unique relationship between this team and their fans. We definately tend to “embrace” each other.
A thought on a subject that hasn’t been discussed here – I find it difficult to believe that the dirtbag who went to the NCAA with the information did so only because of not getting paid for the money he had fronted as he claimed on the “Real Sports” progam. I think it’s safe to say that if a hundred grand or so would have made all this go away, we probably would be discussing something else. More likely, this guy was blackmailing Reggie for a whole lot more than just the money he had paid out. Even second rate hoodlums typically have a pretty hefty “interest penalty”.
Without trying to make Reggie look like a “victim”, we will perhaps never know all of the mitigating circumstances surrounding this scandal. Without theorizing all of the possibilites, I think there were probably issues unknown to us that contributed to a bad decision being made.
Finally, regardless of the value of the car or how many away games Reggie’s parents attended, my gut instinct remains that Pete Carroll didn’t find out what he didn’t want to find out. Had he probed, he may have found himself in a position to either suspend his best player or become part of a cover up. Sometimes ignorance really is bliss, even if it’s self-imposed. Assumming I’m correct, I doubt there are too many people who would have done differently in the same situation.
You obviously have a much greater knowledge of the details surrounding this than I do. But other than my belief that Carroll looked the other way and my low personal opinion of Kiffin, I don’t think we disagree that much.
I’m truly sorry about what happend to USC. I wouldn’t wish that on any program. I’m even more sorry the central figure is someone who should have been a source of pride for both Trojan and Saints fans.
Some of the comments players made on twitter
made it very obvious how rampant this type of thing is. They probably picked Reggie to use as an example because he just won an SB. Not that it’s right but you can’t tell me there is not at least a little truth to that. They wanted to make sure they went all out with this one, getting the trophy returned, etc.
