Billy Miller Rallies Behind Reggie Bush; Bashes USC and "The System"

Sorry if I'm a little late on this one. Yesterday afternoon a heated Billy Miller took to Twitter and went all Network on us, coming down on his alma mater USC's recent decision to return Reggie Bush's Heisman Trophy and take down his pictures, basically wiping their hands clean of the running back.

Here is what he said, through five separate tweets:

USC made one great move today with Pat Haden as AD and one really dumb one with the Reggie Bush decision...I might get in trouble for this but they are not returning all the money from his jersey sells or the bowl money or the TV money!...Take down what ever you want but to USC players and staff know Reggie was one of the best things that happened to the school...The system is what needs to change and the way the Mafia (NCAA) come come down on a player or school and not answer to anyone is a shame...Ok I'm done, take away the fact that he is my boy, the whole thing was handled poorly and not in any ones best interest

What do you guys think? Does he have a point?

anyone who has had some classes with the athletes

probably understands that most of them probably have no business being in college at all. i remember a speech class i had when a def lineman (who was good but not great) literally stood up when it was his turn to give a speech and said, “Ummm, i forgot my speech.” we had an open grading policy in the class, so he got a D.

its time that the ncaa does what we already know and admit that they already pay these guys a little even though they might need a little more. giving them something like rights to thier own jerseys would be enough. but it would be hard to differentiate between what makes them paid players and what makes them amateurs and there will always be lines that the players can and will cross. and there will always a**holes like my classmate above who doesnt even take the time to write even a bad speech and realize the opportunity he has been given since hes not a nfl talent anyway.

Its just wrong

Now thats a true friend and teammate. USC just slapped reggie when all he did was win for them and was a great role model for everyone. Sad to see once caral left there class left with him. Reggie will always be one of the best to ever play college. And i pray the best to ever play the game( ok i have dreams to)

NCAA

… and thanks NCAA for giving Reggie ( a guy who lives to put people on his highlight real when they talk sh*t about him ) the biggest chip he now has on his shoulder. Reggie will now replace that trophy for another Lombardi.

Not Dead Yet

Reggie still has his trophy. And they would have to pry my cold dead fingers from around it. USC is just following the NCAA sanctions by stripping itself of any association with Bush. All top tier recruits get paid in some way. It’s just a matter of who gets what and in this case, who gets pissed.

by Ponysaints on Jul 21, 2010 9:48 AM CDT reply actions

If you wanted to be completely fair about it, the NCAA would have to lift all future sanctions against USC, strip them of their Pac-10 and national titles while Bush was there, and give them back the scholarship they awarded Bush. They would then have to determine a value of the money realized by having Bush on the team, as Miller pointed out. That money certainly wouldn’t go to Bush, though. Not if you’re wiping the slate clean. They could donate it to charity, I suppose. Bush would then have to pay for his college education. The two points in bold seem to have been glossed over.

Bush would still come out of the whole thing smelling like a rose, obviously. Without the springboard USC provided, he’s not making $10 million a year in 2010. That easily pays for the four years of college. In turn, you wouldn’t be punishing the university and their current (or future) student athletes, none of which had anything to do with any of this.

True, but there’s no way of telling if he would have won those titles without Bush or not. At least he wouldn’t lose the experience or the degree.

by coldpizza on Jul 21, 2010 11:07 AM CDT up reply actions

The biggest injustice in this situation is that future USC students are punished for what past students did. That’s completely bogus. I don’t give a rats arse about “purity of the game” or anything, so I don’t care whether college players are paid or not. Couldn’t care less if you paid me to try. But as long as the rules are the rules, if they are going to punish the rule breakers the people (players and coaches) actually involved need to be punished, without touching in the slightest the players who come after them.

So I’m seconding the idea of making Bush pay for his tuition and taking away the money he earned USC. And fining Carroll and others. But leave the unfortunate innocents who came behind them alone.

by FriarBob on Jul 21, 2010 10:39 AM CDT reply actions

He has a very valid point.

Although I kind of wish it wasn’t true. College is a business now. That is at all levels, not just athletics. Academic scholarships are simply an investment in someone the university believes will one day be wealthy enough to give money back to the place he got his degree. Athletic scholarships are given to people who will sell tickets and bring in money for the schools.

If I didn’t love the rivalry and tradition of college football so much I would be totally against the idea of mandatory time playing college ball for football players entirely and say they should do away with the false sense of academic involvement and go to a minor league system such as what baseball has. The multitude of unemployed former NFL players proves that they are not taking advantage of the opportunity to actually learn something from their time in the university, so why make them go through the motions when all they want to do is play sports? Colleges are supposed to be an institution of learning, but with the business of universities these days, it just doesn’t hold true in all cases.

But back to Reggie Bush. I just can’t bring myself to care one way or another. But I’m sure Mike Florio is going to let us know his pleasure with USC making this move within the next 24 hours.

"I want to hand this trophy to the MVP of the Super Bowl -- and the MVP of the entire league.''
-- Saints coach Sean Payton, handing the Vince Lombardi Trophy to Drew Brees after Super Bowl 44.

I lined out the part that doesn’t apply to me. This is pretty much all I view college football as … a breeding ground for pro football. I watch it for two reasons alone: a.) getting a better feel for specific “buzz” players about to make the big leap, b.) when there’s absolutely nothing better on TV. Who beat who, who’s ranked where … I honestly don’t care about any of that.

He keeps the Heisman

Nobody can take away what he did on the field. I do think he should be punished for breaking the rules. My opinion take his diploma he will probably never use it anyway. And make Pete carrol pay the money back that he made during Bush’s playing time at USC. Just my opinion.

By which I mean, I thought that the NCAA said that Carroll (and others at Southern Cal) did fail in their responsibilities to monitor athletes.

by AllSaintsDay on Jul 21, 2010 12:35 PM CDT up reply actions

Maybe in that regard. But did his contract say anything about forfeiting money, if he failed to do so? I seriously doubt it. Otherwise, coaches would have players on strict lockdown for four years, never leaving the athlete’s dorm except for classes and meals.

by coldpizza on Jul 21, 2010 12:45 PM CDT up reply actions

Oh yeah. I’m not arguing in favor of taking money, just that, from the NCAA’s point of view, Carroll did have something to do with it.

by AllSaintsDay on Jul 21, 2010 2:49 PM CDT up reply actions

Also, if you were clearing the slate, Reggie Bush would have theoretically never existed. I could see maybe 1/80th of his salary for those years, or whatever percentage Bush represented of the team. you’d still have to pay him for coaching the other 98% of the team, though.

Couple of notes on this...

The NCAA required USC disassociate from Reggie Bush. The “symbolic” gesture of removing the Heisman from Heritage Hall and returning it to the Heisman Trust is part of that disassociation.

Reggie was deemed ineligible for the 2005 season…they season in which he won it. So why would the school continue to recognize it? I doubt the Heisman Trust will take it away…they didn’t take Charles Woodson’s away and it was found that he took money from an agent while at UM.

And frankly the Heisman is an overrated award anyway…

As for the school giving back any money WRT to selling Reggie’s Jerseys etc. Will Reggie be returning any money to USC for his scholarship? Will he reimburse the school the money they are about to lose because of the TWO YEAR bowl ban that the school incurred because of Reggie’s (and his parents) actions? I can assure that is not peanuts…

No one will debate the greatness that Reggie was on the field but his selfishness has caused significant harm to the institution as a whole. You won’t see me disagreeing with anyone about the sham that is the draconian NCAA and their arcane view of “the student-athlete” but the rules are clear and Reggie not only broke the rules but his actions when all this came out say a lot. He has NEVER discussed anything about this. He settled with one guy but didn’t with another?

He doesn’t care about USC, otherwise he would have taken some action to help the school. I have covered this from day one…Reggie has done nothing to help USC defend themselves against these charges….nary a peep.

I know he has done great things for the City New Orleans I won’t dispute that…but Reggie is hardly innocent in this.

As Reggie said in his tweets

Well,……..we’re waiting…..

i think reggie cares about USC

i dont think he should have screwed them over like this, but how could he help with the charges against USC if he actually did everything that he is being accused with? he is obviously outside of the ncaa’s jurisdiction, so he probably felt like he shouldn’t say anything.

question: what are your thoughts on carrol skipping town to be replaced with an even better (sarcasm font) coach?

Like I said...

Provide bank records and documentation to prove your innocence…but it is doubtful there anything that could exonerate Bush. Listen to the tapes on Real sports. Reggies dad admits they took the money in promising to get lake reimbursed.

Reggie settled with Michael Michaels but not Lloyd Lake…did Reggie actually think Lake was going to keep quiet?

Settle with them both and this goes away…no NCAA interviews of Lake, no garbage can reporting from Yahoo…it would have gone away. Heck, even Kardashian told him to settle…and then the day before the depositions he settles? By then it was too late…the NCA had all the needed to cobble a weak story together.

As for Carroll…I like him but it was time for him to go…9 years is a long time in one spot. He probably left because of the sanctions but who knows…and really who cares?

what’ s done is done…

Well, no....

But if he isn’t going to help the school why would he allow himself to be humiliated?

Many ’SC fans just shake their head in bewilderment over his lack of action on this…he not only screws the school but he screws himself too?

If he is too stupid to look out for himself he isn’t going to find a lot of sympathy from the fans who he did screw that supported him all these years.

"Selfishness?"

That’s a presumption. We really don’t know what happened. We don’t know how much Reggie’s parents are involved in this and we forget the dude was a kid. A broke kid at that. Yeah the rules were broken and I understand what’s going on BUT no one understands what happened other than the people involved. Leave the presumptions alone!

I realize you don't care but you need read the report

there is plenty there that implicates LaMar and Denise Griffin…Reggie’s parents

This wasn’t some onetime 500.00 handshake…this was systematic. There are tapes that show Lamar admitting they took the money and there is the Ornstein angle in which Ornstein admitted he gave the Griffin’s money…selfish or greed take your pick but this was not some mistake….

More important if they are innocent then show us the records…they declined.
