Around SBN: Jeremy Lin's Game-Winner Was Incredible, Worth Remembering

Patrick Ramsey?? Seriously??

So the Saints are evidently going to sign Patrick Ramsey to be a back up quarterback to Drew Brees.  Like most of us at CSC, I think this is a serious flaw in their thinking.  He hasn't been in a meaning full game in how long?? I understand that some experiance is needed, and if we were going to rely on experianced QB's then maybe we should have let Chase throw the ball instead of Brunell at the end of the season last year, he certainly couldn't have done worse.  So now the Saints are waiting until Thursday so they can make the deal for Ramsey.  I seriously wanted Jason Campbell, but he has already been picked up by the... Raiders I think, yeah it's with the Raiders.  I know that we can come up with a better solution than Patrick Ramsey, but who knows, he might be the next Kurt Warner, or Ryan Leaf........

A backup being “the next Ryan Leaf” is about as likely as a movie extra being “the next Leonardo DiCaprio”. Placing 2nd overall pick expectations on someone basically hired to carry a clipboard, just isn’t something a whole lot of NFL GMs are bound to do. Truth be told, if Ramsey showed even a hint of “Leaf potential”, he’d already be on someone’s roster.

You do remember....

That Ryan Leaf was an embarrassment to anyone who had ever set foot on a Football Field, right?

by mattxlegend on Jul 23, 2010 11:32 AM CDT up reply actions

Y

You do realize that CP said potential right? Regardless of what he ended up doing in the NFL, Ryan Leaf was easily one of the greatest college quarterbacks ever, thus leading to his great potential

"Here's the funny thing. Last night, I couldn't sleep too well. I called my dad (Bill) at 2:15 in the morning, and told him I had a feeling I was going to hit the game-winner from 42 yards on the right hash. I think I was two yards off."- Garrett Hartley

by Alex Swift on Jul 23, 2010 1:14 PM CDT up reply actions

Was he more of an embarrassment than Babe Laufenberg? Or countless other QBs whose roles were clearly defined as second fiddle? He was … but only because of the expectations that were placed upon him going in. It’s not like the vast majority of career backup QBs have outperformed Leaf. Very few have and that’s my point. The Saints aren’t sinking anything more than a veteran minimum contract and a roster spot into Ramsey. It’s a half-baked comparison.

A better “opposite of Warner” example would have been Ryan Fitzpatrick; someone called upon in emergency duty that failed to excel. I’m sure there are many examples even better than that, he’s just a fairly recent one.

He hasn’t been a starter in 5 years, but we don’t need a starter. We need a backup. When Ramsey came off the bench in emergency situations in Denver he was adequate, (which is more than I can say for Jason Campbell as a starter in D.C.). What more do you want from a backup QB?

"I want to hand this trophy to the MVP of the Super Bowl -- and the MVP of the entire league.''

“we don’t need a starter. We need a backup.”

Huh?

What is a “backup” to you?

A backup is someone you might actually have to play/start in a game if something happens to your current starter.

ie. A “backup” is a potential starter. No?

there arent enough starting qb's to go around

much less back ups. id prefer to have a steve young type qb on the bench. but jason campbell? i dont think he would have been willing to be a backup here.

it would have been nice, but he wanted to start and he wanted WAY more money than we’re willing to offer a backup.

Steve young clone is Jeff Garcia

Granted he’s nowhere near as good. But not many backup options are.

Like most of us at CSC, I think this is a serious flaw in their thinking.

There are 3,000+ members here. And at least one disagrees with you.

Jason Campbell is starting at Oakland. Why would he want to carry a clipboard and hang out with the annoying pup dog Chase Daniel while Brees continues to tear it up out on the field? He wouldn’t. Not even Jeff Garcia wants to do that. Well, maybe he does:

Rotoworld.com: Jeff Garcia-QB- Eagles Jul. 21 – 9:11 am et Free agent Jeff Garcia has been working out and is intent on getting a job in the NFL, a source tells the National Football Post. Garcia has been linked to the UFL, but the source says that Garcia is not interested in joining the minors. He’ll likely have to wait for an injury in training camp to get any nibbles. Garcia is also likely monitoring the Michael Vick situation in Philadelphia closely, as the Eagles’ current No. 3 QB is raw project Mike Kafka.

I think Garcia is betting that the Kolb kid will fail early and he’ll get a shot to start at Philly. Better than signing with the Saints and crossing your toes inside your cleats hoping that Brees gets hurt. Probably not going to happen.

If Brees gets hurt, Ramsey will take snaps until the Saints scramble to get the best QB available (maybe Garcia). That appears to be the plan. It’s worked for 4 years, they’re going to try one more.

actually… i wonder how superstitious JG is.

Didn’t he fill in for Nabby after he was on the cover of Madden tore the ACL and meniscus in his right knee while jumping out of bounds in a game versus the Tennessee Titans, ending his season? (in 2006)

If all we need is someone to take up a spot on the roster, we have that.

If we want someone who could possibly WIN if he needed to play in a meaningful game, then I seriously doubt Ramsey is that guy. :-(

I think they are going to give him a chance because of his experience. But PayLoo aren’t stupid. He’ll have to earn the right to keep the job he’s being handed the inside track to. If he sucks in preseason, they’ll try some other option(s).

“If he sucks in preseason, they’ll try some other option(s).”

So you’re telling me there’s a chance… that we still might get a capable backup, even if they sign PR first? Thanks.

(Did Brunell not suck in pre-season, thus earning a spot at #2? Or, did they just go with what they already had signed and content with holding a clipboard?)

all I am saying is that based on the other threads I have read about Ramsey, a lot of people are not putting any stock into him. If we wanted someone with experiance, then yeah maybe try to pick up Garcia or whatever. But it seems to me that someone who has taken the snaps that this person has taken, I wouldn’t really call a “seasoned” quarterback. We have a rookie and one that’s played on the practice squad. I think we could have found someone else a little bit better to hold a clipboard, but like DBMC said there are not a lot of quality backup’s avaliable right now. Sure I would love a Steve Young as Back-up but if we wanted something like that then

 we should have drafted Tebow

but seriously, I really don’t understand the whole Ramsey thing and the Ryan Leaf remark was because he is the biggest bust to hit the NFL, and I don’t think we need a bust for a back up Campbell was more than adequate in the fact that if not for a missed field goal, we would not have been undefeated going into Dallas.

Something i don't quite get

is the acquisition of an experienced backup considering the make-up of our current roster. Now obviously it’s preferable to have an experienced backup who knows the game rather than a second year man and a rookie. However, as all of us have heard, Sean Payton and the rest of the organization have stated time and time again how high they are on Chase Daniel and developing him. Now, take into account that we also just drafted a rookie in Sean Canfield albeit in the 7th round.

The thing is if you’re high on your second year backup and you want to bring in an experienced backup to help…why draft a rookie QB? That just seems like a throwaway pick. Surely if nothing else you could try to take a flyer pick on a guy who could potentially earn a special team spot than waste the pick? And if they are high on Daniel, and truly wanted Canfield, then where’s the room for another backup?

Where it’s true that most team carry 3 QBs on the roster, the Saints actually only dressed 2 QBs for much of the season last year. If you we carry Brees, Daniel, and Ramsey then the only place for Canfield is the practice squad. Yet to get to the practice squad, we’d have to release him, have him clear, then sign him to the squad. That opens up everyone out there to sign him away if they so choose. Perfectly fine for Daniel last year being an undrafted free agent, but doing that with your actual draft picks is kind of risky imo.

a question only SP can answer...

If “Sean Payton and the rest of the organization have stated time and time again how high they are on Chase Daniel and developing him.” then why the heck didn’t they play him in week 17?

Ramsey

I remember when Ramsey played for the Skins under Steve Spurrier, poor guy nearly got killed! So he never really had a chance. They had a terrible offensive line and a terrible team. So it’s hard to say how Ramsey will perform. You just never know

Ramsey's going to make Joey Harrington look like Guy Benjamin

Joey Harrington was one of the best backups we ever had.

Want proof? Name me one game where he came in and played in the regular season where he didn’t shine!

On a non-joke note. I don’t think you guys understand the concept of the backup QB. Apparently you guys all want Brees 2.0 as the backup. Backups are Backups for a reason. With the exception of 2-3 backup QBs in the business, none of them are starters/starting quality. All you can ask for is someone competent enough to learn the offense and hopefully be able to salvage a game or two if the team relies on a strong running game and smart defensive play. Ramsey more than fits that bill.

Would you prefer Adran McPherson? there,…better

by Nez on Jul 22, 2010 5:19 PM CDT reply actions

Yeah it’s hard to get a back up that is starter quality. Look at all the problems San Fran had in choosing which of their QB’s was good enough to start let alone be the back up. Plus there was the whole issue Arizona had with Kurt Warner and Leinert. Leinart was getting paid big money to ride the pine while he watched Kurt Warner go out and play. And even when they brought him in at the end of one game, they had to bring Kurt back in to make sure the other team didn’t mount a comeback. He’s got 4 years experiance and was getting paid way more than Brees last year. Steve Young rode the pine watching Montana kick butt for the niners, so it is possible for a high caliber QB to be content riding the pine whilst waiting for their chance to shine.
