Saints Sign Matt Tennant; Re-Sign Bobby McCray
Looks like the front office has been busy today!
Not only have the Saints signed fifth-round draft pick from Boston College, offensive lineman Matt Tennant...
Terms weren't disclosed, but it's believed the total base value of the deal is roughly $1.96 million.
The former Boston College center received the standard base salaries of $320,000, $405,000, $490,000 and $575,000, a signing bonus in the neighborhood of $174,000 as well as a fourth-year escalator clause that can significantly boost the maximum value of the deal.
...but they also brought back defensive end Bobby McCray...
According to the source, the deal has a base salary of $1.5 million, with another $1 million available in incentives.
Welcome back, Bobby!
It appears the move to cut McCray last month, who would have been due a roster bonus of $1.25 million, was purely a financial one. His re-signing is no doubt a surprise to many, even Times-Pic reporter Jeff Duncan, who gave his opinion on the chances of McCray's return on Twitter in early July...
No. I would not count on it.
What about you? Are you as surprised as Jeff Duncan?

Oh, that crafty Loomis
The McCray thing makes sense to me. The Saints save some $ on the roster bonus he was set to receive beforehand and McCray got a chance to test the market. I like it. Welcome back 93 Octane! I feel a little better about our depth at DE now.

Heard rumors
for the past week or two that McCray was hoping to resign with the Saints. Good to have the added depth back…also grats to the big man on his recent wedding.
Rumors?

Lol the truth?
People magazine. People magazine did a break down of McCray’s wedding and some lead up to it, because of the whole Reggie Bush and Kardashian angle. Apparently Kim and the whole family was there as they’re also friends with McCray’s bride.
Several times in the snippets it mentioned that McCray still had a desire to play for the Saints and hoped to resign.
The National Enquirer printed some rumors about McCray’s return to the Saints before People Magazine did. It was buried in an article about Lindsay Lohan’s jail sentence. You can’t rely solely on the main stream sports media to find this stuff out. You have to really dig for it.
Additonally
There was also some info regarding it a few days back from Sports Illustrated in the Hot Mustard section. Can’t remember what day it was though.
It was also mentioned in one of the articles somebody fanshotted that a coach or two suggested he might be coming back. I think it was GW himself but I’m not 100% sure on that.
it was in the...

Yeah, Williams said it
something to the effect of “don’t be surprised if you see Bobby McCray back, you never know…”
And….all the tabloids listed him as a Saints player when they showed pics of his wedding.
From your fanshot, Dave...

I was never all that concerned with losing McCray. I never thought of him as anyone we couldn’t live without. But I’m really happy to see Tennant getting signed. That kid is going to be good.

Glad to see it because....
McCray was solid down the stretch. Whatever happened with his drunk driving case?
Our D-Line is better than it was yesterday.
Duncan tweet:
interesting newsHA! Since there is no real communication between the Saints and the media, Jeff assumed that Payton was annoyed with McCray’s playing style (penalties) and discipline (tardy to the party) and therefore they cut him. Which led me to believe it since I’m a gullible hayseed. Bobby must have promised to do better, after the wake-up call.
Good times are comin',
but they sure comin' slow.
LOL!

Self-deprecating humor = very funny.
Once again, Jeff’s assessments are wrong. Either that or Pay-Loo have become very skilled at manipulating the local media into reporting only what they want reported. I’m glad to have Bobby back. Smooth move by Loomis to save that $1.25 mil.

Duncan has a long history of unfulfilled prophecies. Fujita WILL be back in 2010 … the Saints WILL sign Derrick Brooks before the close of 2009 training camp … Stu needs to add Jeffrey to the AI.

This whole thing is a Brett Favre head game
Release McCray, and Brett breathes a big sigh of relief. A couple weeks later, bring him back, and Brett’s blood pressure spikes. Guy’s getting old, he can’t take much more of this.
It was worth the wait.
GW said in the interview that someone recently posted as a FanShot...

Great, just as soon as I convince myself he wasn't worth having
I’ve got to do a complete 180. Oh well, good to see him back!
i was
surprised they let him go to begin with, i’m glad he’s back, i want to see him put favres pants on the ground in september.

Cognitive dissonance
It is hard after the long years to absorb this steady drumbeat of good news. Depth on the OL, depth on the DL, all in the same day. Where will it all end? McCray’s best games, I think, lie before him. Unlike, say, Brett Farve.

I wasn't surprised about Bobby
Greg Williams told me not to be.
And now a word from one of our sponsors "Preparation H, when discomfort sneaks between your cheeks, Preparation H"
glad he's back
but i don’t understand why he would resign with us when he just got cut because of roster bonuses. Maybe they added his roster bonus into the base salary. idk. i’d probably be too POd to resign after that unless no one is giving me a shot or they promise to put it into the salary. maybe he even got the money on the side?
Superbowl bound!!!...I know! do you?! Go Saints!!
Because money is money...
and apparently nobody else was interested in him. He was right there where they left him.

Yes
The Nighthawks have posted at their website an impressive roster of fallen stars who still may have some football left in them.
The list includes, among others, former Eagles guard Shawn Andrews, former Saints defensive end Charles Grant, former Cardinals defensive tackle Wendell Bryant, former Steelers and Panthers cornerback Ricardo Colclough, former Raiders receiver Ronald Curry, former Raiders running back Justin Fargas, former Packers and Vikings receiver Robert Ferguson, former Seahawks, Packers, and Texans running back Ahman Green, former first-round quarterback Patrick Ramsey, and former Raiders quarterback Andrew Walter.

It just struck me ...
Grant may now be the best Nighthawks defender since Nighthawk of the Defenders.
