Do we really need Patrick Ramsey?
So Patrick Ramsey is not in the building and who knows if he will ever be... a couple of well known beat writers claimed he would be signed after July 22nd and now they are kind of backtracking from the scoop which wasnt there... but seriously.... what do we really need from a back up QB and why hasnt one been signed yet?
We all know if #9 goes down we are in trouble. Consensus wisdom says that a back-up could handle the ship for no more than a couple of games, if that far, but we are pretty much shot. Can a Ramsey handle it better than a Chase Daniel or a Sean Canfield who have never taken a snap? Possibly.... but who really knows... he has been wearing a tag for so long.. and frankly it is hard to be excited about him... Payton looks to be thinking that way or else he would have been here already... that playbook is as big as they come... Lets face it... apart from a Jeff Garcia who else out there could effectively cover for Drew Brees?
Brees goes down and the next thing that happens is an awful amount of handoffs suddenly going through, which takes me to the following point. There currently are only five RB's on the roster with Lynell Hamilton expected to be new Mike Bell and PJ Hill battling Chris Ivory for number #4. It looks Payton has made his mind already.... But with a difference from last season - Hamilton is also a good special teamer while Bell wasnt. Can he handle the load of being the main short yardage carrier and ST ace at the same time? I think we can reasonably expect the fourth back to see a significant number of snaps (there will be four backs in the end anything less is an accident waiting to happen).
So where does it leave us... I would feel much more confortable if they signed Garcia or... a veteran RB to be there both for short yardage downs or if, God forbids, there is a sudden change of game plan which heavily skewes the play-book toward the running game.
Looking at it, IMO, this looks the best form of insurance if for whatever reason #9 cant suit up...

I'll say again what I've been saying for months...
Chase has been in the system for a little time now. Let him take alot of snaps and run some of the drills at camp, and give him a real chance in the preseason to compete for the back-up spot. We keep hearing how big the front office is on the kid, and supposedly he showed promise in the OTAs…could he be that much worse than Ramsey?
Certainly couldn’t do worse than Brunell! And it would save the team some money…
"It's about time that something good like this happened." - Drew Brees
That was why we all wanted to see him in the Carolina game. Brunell was doing so bad that Chase should have had a chance to take some snaps. It seems like they dressed him for nothing. I am hoping that maybe we will see more of Chase in the preseason so all of us can maybe rest easy in the highly unlikely sense that he may have to take over.
I do not think they need ramsey.
You have 3 backuo QB with similiar senarios.
1. Ramsey: we already know he will be horrible
2. Chase Daniels Newbie (at least he knows the playbook, well kinda)
3. Sean Canfield Rookie
If the end result is going to be the same, why do we not keep these young guys as Brees’s backup. This will give them some time to play if the worst case senario happens. It would also free up some money the would have been spent on Ramsey.
Jeff Garcia would be awesome, but I do not think that will happen.

Jeff Garcia would be awesome,
Couldn’t agree more.
but I do not think that will happen.
Unfortunately, couldn’t agree more.

i'm with you
i don’t think ramsey is a “value added” roster move. i’d vote to have daniels take the back up snaps.
I like Chase Daniel
He should develop into a 21st century Shane Matthews. Ahoy!
Great backup, mediocre starter.
I’ll admit to waffling quite a bit on this one. I don’t like the idea of trusting a rookie to back up Brees (and Daniel is, for all intents and purposes, still a rookie). But in the four seasons Drew has been in New Orleans, Ramsey was busy throwing 77 passes. He bombed with the Jets; he bombed with the Broncos; he was cut by the Titans, and never could see the field for the Lions.
So it’s looking like Ramsey is just Joey Harrington without the piano. I vote with everyone else: losing Drew is a disaster, anyway, so let Daniels and Canfield get their shots. And if they both suck during pre-season, we can always sign someone else. Just not Michael Vick, please dear God…
It was worth the wait.
Michael or Jamarcus… pick your poison… LOL
You are my people, you are my crowd, this is our music, we love it loud...
However
There’d be some sort of delicious irony to Vick ending up as a Saint backup quaterback after some of those thrashings we received from him in the early-to-mid part of last decade.

at least wit Jamarcus we would have the nfl's only QB/DT hybrid.

Well, with Jamarcus we could just train him to be an OT and have an extra blocker for PT.
Just don’t let him pass, please for the love of God, don’t let him pass.
As bad as it is, our QB situation right now is pretty much on par with the rest of the NFL. I could probably name at least 10 other teams that have a 2nd string QB that has never won an NFL game. Right off the top of my head, Green Bay, Seattle, New England, Indianapolis and Carolina are a just as bad, if not worse, in the backup QB department.

I fail to see how Seattle is just as bad off as we are with J.P. Losman in the fold.

I was thinking he was 3rd on the depth chart behind Whitehurst.

That hasn’t been determined yet, to the best of my knowledge. Even if he is though, I would think that designation is more about getting Whitehurst more reps with the 2nd team (read: better players) in practice, in preparation for his long term future with the team and less about who would actually take the field, if Hasselbeck goes down with a short term injury and/or the playoffs are still within reach. In other words, unless Whitehurst blows Losman out of the water in training camp, the only way he’s probably going to see the field in 2010 is if BOTH Hasselbeck and Losman are hurt, or the season is a lost cause. I can’t imagine Pete Carroll sitting on that much experience, under any other scenario.

So where the Saints have 2 unknown commodities, teams like Seattle and Denver have 1 unknown commodity and 1 bad commodity. I think the #2 spot for the regular season on both of those teams is very much up in the air and I don’t think experience is going to play as much of a factor if that experience is as someone that can’t win games.

(I know I’m later to the part, so forgive me if this was said)
We’re contenders – those two teams arean’t.
They wern’t going to the SB or even the playoffs. if they go from 7-9 to 4-12, it’s no big deal… they don’t need the insurance like we do… because all they are ensuring is a crappy season any we.
We need the insurance because we are trying to preserve our chance to go to the playoffs and win.
It’s MUCH more important that we have a capable backup than Seattle or Denver.
Want to go to the Saints vs. Cowboys game? I've got an extra ticket.
Losman has won 10 games in Buffalo and he just won a UFL championship. Quinn has won 3 games in Cleveland. I think you’re underrating the value of starting NFL experience.
"I was not on the boat in question." -Darren Sharper
Agreed...
and at least Ramsey has some real game experience; I remember the drop off when Painter came in for Indy; he was a rookie and looked terrible. Brees is always in great condition and gets rid of the ball fast so I’m not worried about him getting injured. Garcia was cut by The Raiders last year so maybe he is at the end.
If it’s truly an open competition for the backup position — which I don’t think it would be, if they sign Ramsey — and all things are equal otherwise, Canfield would seem like the better option, since he’s a lefty and wouldn’t have to throw across his body on a fake (or botched snap) FG or PAT. Regardless, unless they plan on going with Morstead as a holder, they need to settle on this rather quickly in preseason, in order to strengthen the rapport between center, holder and kicker. Throw in the fact that we may also be talking about a long snapper (Gresham) and those extra reps become paramount to Hartley’s continued success.

Keep in mind, an active emergency (third string) quarterback CANNOT participate in a game, unless all other quarterbacks on the team are done for the day. That includes placeholding.
