Around SBN: NFL Players Ready To Welcome Gay Teammate

From Rotoworld:

Malcolm Jenkins opened training camp as the Saints' first-team free safety.
The Saints say they expect Darren Sharper (microfracture surgery) to begin practicing soon, but it will be interesting to see if Jenkins can lock down the job. He's obviously healthier, and the Saints' future at the position.

Can we not yet agree that I was right and Rotoworld was wrong when they said months ago that Jenkins would stay at CB? I believe this May 3rd post from them was the one I said "Not so fast" to:

Saints re-signed FS Darren Sharper to a one-year contract.
Sharper, 34, tied for the league lead with nine INTs last year while chipping in 71 tackles and 15 pass breakups. Though not much of a run-stopping safety, Sharper's ball skills and aggressiveness in coverage always made New Orleans his best fit under up-tempo coordinator Gregg Williams. 2009 first-round pick Malcolm Jenkins will stay at corner, and battle Randall Gay for nickel back duties. Usama Young will continue to focus on special teams.

Can we not update the accountability index now? If not, I understand. I'll be patient. :)

no

It all hinges on Sharper.

If Sharper can’t make the final roster for Game 1, Jenkins will be at FS. He HAS to practice for that.

If Sharper does make the team, he’ll still be at nickel. Not FS.

are nickels always CBs, or can a Safety be a nickelback

Sean Payton and the players need to focus on the upcoming season and defending the title but I don’t.

you can put anyone in that spot.

Troy Brown (the WR) for the Patriots, played a little nickelback (not the band) a few years ago… got a few INT’s.

Technically

…nickel back is a defensive back. It’s not a cornerback, and it’s not a safety…it’s a nickel back. And under Gregg Williams, duties shift around continuously, anyway. You can have a nickel back blitzing while a linebacker drops back in a deep zone, or you can have a nickel back covering the tight end while the strong safety blitzes, or…whatever.

So if Malcolm Jenkins makes the team (big if), he’ll do so as a defensive back. What he plays on any particular down will depend on a lot of variables.

It was worth the wait.

what a coincidence

rotoworld.com:

Eagles acquired RB J.J. Arrington and a conditional draft pick in 2012 from the Broncos in exchange for LB Joe Mays.
Arrington was out of football last year after undergoing microfracture surgery, and it’s completely unclear what he has left. The 27-year-old can be a passing-down asset when healthy, though the Eagles are good to go in that area with starter LeSean McCoy. If Arrington makes the team – and it’s a big “if” - he’ll probably be No. 3 or 4 on the depth chart behind McCoy and Mike Bell.

All beside the point

They said he would stay at cornerback. He’s clearly not staying exclusively at cornerback. The dude is playing free safety right now, which I said at the time he would get reps there. I still don’t see the disagreement. Regardless of if Sharper is on the field in week one, Jenkins is still gonna be doing more than just cornerback throughout the season. That’s what they said, “he’ll stay at corner.”

"As soon as Tony (Dungy) said we had no chance, I knew we had 'em right where we wanted 'em"--Coach Sean Payton right after Super Bowl XLIV with the Lombardi Trophy firmly in hand. WHO DAT!!

It’s training camp. Tracy Porter is returning punts. It’s all experimental, in preparation for Game 1. Which is the earliest that this can be decided.

Jenkins is the heir apparent at FS, no one questions that.

He is currently listed as CB on the Saints roster. If Sharper can’t make the team for week 1, he’ll almost certainly be listed then as S.
