Saints Training Camp Day 2 Links

While Dave is away having an awesome vacation, he's asked me to help piece together posts of Saints training camp-related links from around the web. For those like me who, over the past few months, have been starving for Saints news, prepare to gorge yourself on the current plethora of Saints links out there (What is a plethora? El Guapo explains). They're popping up so fast, I can't keep track of them. Even if you were to visit sites like KittenPants.com (yes, this site actually exists), there might be a Saints article there. I guess this is another advantage of being the current world champion.

Well, here's my first attempt at trying to help fill Dave's massive shoes. I'm sure that by the time I get this posted, there will be many more Saints stories out there. Feel free to link to any important ones I've missed in the comment section. If I were to recommend anything out of today's news, it would be the Gregg Williams videos. I freakin' love that dude! The ESPN "Camp Confidential" post by Pat Yasinskas is also a must-see. Make sure you check them out. There's plenty more after the jump. Enjoy and.....TWO DAT!!!

Tony Gonzalez: Saints great for NFC South - NFC South Blog - ESPN
"I think it’s the best thing that could ever happen,’’ Gonzalez said. "You get that measuring stick, and it was a measuring stick for us last year. Both those games [against New Orleans] we could have won. There is no doubt about it, but we didn’t and that’s just how it goes in the NFL. Playing them twice is only a plus for us. ... We’ll see how we do against them this year."

Gruden: New Orleans Saints can repeat - NFC South Blog - ESPN
"It starts with having a great quarterback,’’ Gruden said. "That’s the No. 1 ingredient. If you’ve got the right steak, you’ve got a chance to cook it up pretty good. You can put herbs on it or make it medium rare or whatever you want to do. You’ve got one of the great quarterbacks in the history of this game. You’ve got a heck of a good chance to repeat. I promise you that.

"When it comes to the returners," said head coach Sean Payton, "we'll continue to work Reggie (Bush) and Lance Moore, but you're going to see Tracy Porter get work. Rod Harper a year ago did some good things in the preseason. Overall in the return game, it's just being more efficient with our blocks and setting up our returns. It's just one phase, one specific area we look at to try to improve on and really get to where we were executing in the postseason. It was something that we did a better job with as the year went on. But you'll see those four guys working back there as returners, and depending on the depth at the other spots and who's in the front unit blocking."

Thanks!

That second video of Williams is awesome. He makes a quick joke about Favre in there. Here we go again with the Vikings fans accusing him of dirty play.

Just found awesome Madden 11 video of Saints winning second SB!

I added it to the videos at the bottom. It’s some kinda cool! Guess who we’ll beat to win it. No, it’s not the Colts but another AFC South team.

Fantastic post, Satch!

Appreciate all the work you put in.

The pics at the top have a couple good ones, including the one with the QB’s stretching. Reminds you of “If you’re not the lead dog the scenery never changes.”

And on PT getting paid...

They gave Colston about 2.7 million a year, right? I don’t think PT will get much more than that. Anyone else?

is anyone else worried that this mix-n-match LB plan may backfire?

GW was talkin’ bout frontrunners at each skill or set of defensive plays, so won’t teams then be able to key on what the defensive play call is based on which LB is in the game?

Your post got me to thinking about it

No, I wasn’t worried. The only LB that Williams considers an every down player is Vilma. I was hoping that we would pick up another LB that is capable of playing every down during the off season, but that didn’t happen. I think part of that hope was a holdover from when the Saints had the dome patrol and they all stayed in for almost every down. My faith back then was fully invested in the LB corp. Now, with the way the NFL has evolved, I truly believe that it is more important to have a better secondary than linebackers. Now don’t get me wrong LBs are still very important.

I think Williams was explaining to the press more that there was not a clear cut front runner after two days in TC, not that he would actually use a rotation or committee. I am more than confidant that he will not be predictable even if he does wind up doing that though.

"Why do you even ponder passing? I mean, you can take a knee and try a 56 yard field goal! This is not Detroit man, this is the Superbowl!" -- Paul Allen's call after Tracy Porter intercepted Brett Favre in NFCCG

by DrWhoDat on Jul 31, 2010 11:39 PM CDT up reply actions

In GW we trust

Honestly, he’s too good a DC to do that. Heck, he even sent Sharper on blitzes this past year, which is clearly not his strong skill set. If there’s anything to worry about the LBs, it won’t be that the scheme is terrible….I worry more about lack of speed or missed tackles from the new LB than bad play calls.

by Andrew Tessier on Jul 31, 2010 11:12 PM CDT up reply actions

No

We run different packages, and we run different defenses from each package. I think what GW is talking about is the difference between the personnel for a 4-3, a 3-4, a 3-3-5, etc. In other words, formations rather than tactics. You can drop back in zone or run a fire blitz from any of those formations…how can the offense know which you’re going to do just by seeing that, for instance, Stanley Arnoux is in the game? What they see is simply that you’re in a 3-3-5 (for example), but they still don’t know what you intend to do.

It was worth the wait.
