CSC All-Time Saints Team Election: Cornerback No. 2
It's time now to vote for the next member to be elected to our CSC All-Time Saints team and today it's a second cornerback. If you missed our tight end nomination post yesterday you can catch it again right here.
Based on your nominations and discussion in yesterdays comment section I have added Robert Massey and actually removed Toi Cook from the ballot. First time that's happened.
The polls are officially open and will remain so for exactly 48 hours which means they will close at 6am on Thursday, July 8th. You only get one vote so make it count. You can make a difference. If you've never voted in a CSC poll to date, now is the perfect time to start. Be sure to tell everyone you know to come on over and vote as well.
As always, the comment section is open for more discussion about these great players and the way things used to be.

I stand corrected
Three hours later and it looks to be neck and neck between McKenzie and Waymer.

Just for the record:
Waymer – 37 INTs in 149 games = 1 INT every 4.0 games.
McKenzie – 13 INTs in 68 games = 1 INT every 5.2 games.
That’s as a Saint. For their CAREERS …
Waymer – 48 INTs in 197 games = 1 INT every 4.1 games.
McKenzie – 28 INTs in 138 games = 1 INT every 4.9 games.
Breaking it down by INTs per season as a Saint:
1 or more – Waymer 7, McKenzie 6
2 or more – Waymer 7, McKenzie 3
3 or more – Waymer 7, McKenzie 2
4 or more – Waymer 6, McKenzie 1
5 or more – Waymer 4, McKenzie 1
6 or more – Waymer 3, McKenzie 0
7 or more – Waymer 1, McKenzie 0
8 or more – Waymer 1, McKenzie 0
9 or more – Waymer 1, McKenzie 0
Pro Bowls – Waymer 1, McKenzie 0
On top of which, Waymer is the Saints all-time interception leader, as well as most games played by a DB, regardless of position. He was also drafted by the Saints, something brought up in the Brenner vs Childs debate. In Brenner’s case, you had the longetivity leader going head to head with the production leader. In this case, the leader in BOTH categories is getting blown away. Makes perfect sense to me.

Silly CP
trying to use logic on the children. There’s still a chance that Waymer will pull this out; afterall, there’s still probably 300 more votes to be cast.
It’s sad though that people just vote for familiar names or even worse, names that have been on the team for only a year or two. This is supposed to be about taking pride in your team and its history. Yet despite this, people seem to vote without even trying to learn a lick about the history of the team, preferring instead the glory of Johnny come latelys.
I liked that McKenzie came back last year
just for a couple games, just so that we could eek out the superbowl run. Talk about a teamer.
You think if someone else was willing to pay him he would have turned them down and waited by the phone for us?

What makes sense apparently has no sway here.

I was expecting McKenzie to make a good showing just because of how well Shockey did last week, but this is kind of disturbing. If we were polling a group of experts that were familiar with every part of the history of the team then this would be a one horse race for Dave Waymer. And Johnnie Poe would definitely have more than one vote at this point. I guess CP was more accurate than even he knew when he said that the bulk of this board is now the guys that can’t remember past Jim Mora.

My vote is in for Waymer.
Which it would have been even without CP’s wonderful breakdown. See, what we are encountering is people voting for people that they are familiar with. While McKenzie certainly wasn’t a slouch, he doesn’t hold a candle to Waymer. The thing is I actually remember watching Waymer play (heck, I’m sure that I saw them all!) But we have a number of younger members in their teens and 20s that don’t want to take the time to research all these people they haven’t heard of.
Believe it or not, football was actually around prior to 1990, and it even predates the Saints team (although we are only concerned with the Saints for the All-Time Team Election…)

i was too young to remember waymer when he was around
but he was def better than mckenzie (not that i dont love the predator). most of mckenzie’s best years were for the packers anyway.

Massey was exceptional in one-on-one coverage. Probably the best we ever had, as a Saint. He just didn’t stick around very long.

That’s how I remember him. My memory is not inaccurate, just full of blanks.
Peace, love and understanding
Tell me, is there no place for them today?

I didn't know Mike's extended family were all members.
This is borderline insanity. Shockey last week and now McKenzie? That would make the whole all-time team a joke. People, contrary to what many of you seem to think, the Saints did actually play before the year 2009.

I know these corners were real good players, but……. i voted for Massey because I really liked watching this guy play. I think at the time if things would have been different, he would have been much better.
any of you that picked McKenzie over Waymer

is it possible
that McKenzie doesn’t have as good an interception ratio as Waymer because he wasn’t thrown at often? I’m not saying this is the case but asking if anyone thinks it might be, I’m not old enough to have seen Waymer play so I don’t know. Also, why is Waymer listed as a FS on nosaintshistory.com every year?
It’s not like they played opposite one another. They were both the best CBs on their respective teams. I don’t see why one would have been avoided moreso than the other. The best case you could make against Waymer would be a better pass rush, at least during the Jim Mora regime. Still, he played throughout the Bum Phillips era, and put up respectable stats even then. No idea on the misclassification. He played CB until 1988, then switched to FS during his final season with the team, before replacing Ronnie Lott in San Francisco.

I'm not ashamed to say I voted for McKenzie
I AM old enough to remember seeing Waymer play and I have very few fond memories of those occasions. I mostly remember him getting completely torched in key moments but ’m old, so maybe my memory is faulty.
"But tonight the Superbowl belongs to the City of New Orleans" - Roger Goodell 2/7/2010
I voted for McKenzie
Because I enjoyed watching him play and thought he was damn good. Excuse us younger Saints fans (I’m 30 by the way) for voting with our heart and not our mind.

Excuse me, but you don't get to speak for all the younger fans.
I never saw Waymer play either, but I can recognize the fact that his production was miles ahead of Mckenzie’s. So when you talk about voting with our hearts, maybe you should reconsider your choice of words.

This is a real shame
And not for McKenzie potentially winning or Waymer. In my opinion, Waymer is by far the best CB the Saints have ever had. However, if i had to pick the second, it would have been McKenzie hands down. One of the two best corners are team has had will be left off our CSC roster. Instead we have a 3 year merc who by far played his best with both the team before, and the team he joined after, the Saints. I can grudgingly understand why people would select McKenzie over Waymer due to their knowledge of the man. What i can’t understand was how either of these would ever lose out to Eric Allen on the Saints all time team.
If you had to pick the 3 worst years of Allen’s career (Not counting his final “i’m too old to still be playing” year in Oakland), it would easily be his three terrible years in the Black and Gold.
Good luck to Waymer, good luck to McKenzie…it’s a shame one of you won’t be on the list.
maybe we can vote for extra DBs for the ALL-Time CSC nickel and dime packages

Again another lead change
It’s been fluctuating back and forth all day. Where are all of these last minute votes coming from? Is Dave just screwing around with us to build suspense? :)
I think it will wind up being Waymer by a nose. I agree with Jeff in that I can’t remember how Eric Allen beat out both of these guys.

He's not on the list....but my vote goes to Reggie Sutton
Helluva player who had the misfortune of finding out where Chuck Muncie hid his white horse over on Airline Drive and took him for a long ride….poor kid.
He had one of the single most historic plays in Saints history that very few Saints fans are aware (because it seemed insignificant at the time). Sean Payton’s last pass as an NFL quarterback was an interception against the Saints in 1987 which was picked off by….Reggie Sutton.
How’s that for some all-time Saints history.
The team that intercepted his last pass and ended his brief 3 game NFL playing career, he would go on to lead to a Super Bowl victory 23 years later.

Just for the record, the Saints didn’t move to their Airline Drive facility until 1995. Both Muncie and Sutton were long gone by then.

Nice catch CP, but.......
I wasn’t referring to the Saints facility. I was talking about how back in the day “aarlyne hi-way” was a great place to score a hooker and drugs . It’s where Muncie disappeared for 3 days and where Jimmy Swaggart got caught up in all his mess….“I have sinned against you”.
Gotcha. I knew Muncie got mixed up with coke, just wasn’t aware Airline Hwy is where it went down. It’s still a great place to score hookers and drugs, btw. Not that there’s anything wrong with that.

maybe he rode the horse from lee circle to airline drive

I have a ?
I know this is a crazy first post but I have been reading this site for awhile and I must say you guys are very entertaining. But going over the arguments for McKenzie and Waymer makes me wonder how did Eric Allen make the team in the first place? He only played for two years and didnt put up the number of either of these guys.
