Charles Grant
Hey Big Easy, a Phins Fan here. Since I think you guys are a classy bunch (based on the few that have visited the Phins blog) I was kind of wondering about Charles Grant. The Phins quietly signed him a couple of days ago, but not much has been mentioned about him and his possible role with the team. I do know a little bit about him, but think that a Saints fan perspective would possibly be some insight about him. What are his biggest strengths and weakness? I know that we are all touchy about first round picks status, so if you were to put his draft status aside what would you really say about him? Thanks guys!

he actually might fit into your 3-4 scheme better than our primarily 4-3 scheme
he seemed to work very hard until he got a new contract a couple years ago, which is always the biggest defensive lineman killer. he might have a couple years left, and maybe he wants to go out and prove that he can still play. his role in the super bowl consisted of fetching sean payton juicy fruit (literally) since he got hurt in the playoffs.

I also think that he's better suited to the 3-4
He plays hard at times, but you have to keep him motivated. He can take over games on (rare) occasions and appear unblockable, but for the most part his best days are behind him.
Peyton, I can eat Oreos faster than you!!!!
When inspired, Grant plays with a ton of heart. That’s when he’s in shape. I have no idea how seriously he took to strength and conditioning this offseason, being that he was outright released. I think the change of scenery could provide a spark. He hasn’t really be a force to be reckoned with in a few years, but a lot of that could be scheme related. In his heyday under Rick Venturi, he was arguably the best defensive player we had. Definitely one of the few bright spots on the 2005 team.

Let’s put it this way.
IF he’s healthy in the first place, and IF he stays healthy, and IF he’s motivated, then he’ll probably be well above average and maybe even quite good for you guys. I’ve felt for some time (well before his release) that his days as an effective 4-3 end were over, but as a 3-4 end he could still contribute. He can’t really beat out an opponent anymore to get the sack/stop/whatever himself, but he can (probably) still hold the guy up for a fast LB to come up behind him and actually make the play on the RB/QB/whatever.
he's not bad vs the run
think of him as on of the top backup DE’s in the league so you won’t be disappointed. As a starter, he will frustrate you probably. Unless that 3-4 works for him, not really sure about that.

Grant had 5.5 sacks last season, which isn’t far off his career average (5.9) and is actually slightly higher than Alex Brown’s career average (5.4). While he’s obviously wasn’t playing at the same level he played at during the Haslett regime, there hasn’t been enough of a dropoff to call his career over, imo. I still think he can contribute and at a considerably lesser salary, he could still wind up making some type of impact, especially in a reserve role. On the whole, we’re talking about someone in the Kyle Vanden Bosch mold.

Cool
thanks everyone, appreciate the insight and feedback. You all pretty much confirmed what I had thought about him from what little I knew.
