Fleur-de-Links August 29, 2010: Laying Low in the Final Week of Preseason
Hi there. Yesterday, the Saints had the day off, so today it's probably weight lifting and film study from the Chargers game, and then tomorrow they'll start practicing for the preseason finale Thursday against the Titans.
So where does that leave us? It leaves us with a run-down of the week's notable dates, a few more wrap-up stories from Friday's game, some final 53-man roster guesses, reflections on Katrina, and a column by Peter Finney.
Vote in the "last week of preseason" poll and then make the jump to get to the good stuff...
Please fully explain your choice in the comment section, especially if you need to vote for more than one answer (as I often do), or if you have an answer that is not represented in the selection options.
Before you get into the links, let me just brief you on the significant dates for this concluding and culminating week of the 2010 preseason.
Tuesday, August 31 - All teams must trim their rosters to 75 players. This date is not so significant to the Saints, since Payton dropped the axe last week. According to a manual head count I did at the roster page of the Saints official team site, our roster sits at 74 actives, with an additional three on the Injured Reserve (Lynell Hamilton, P.J. Hill, and Marcus Mallei), and two more on the Physically-Unable-to-Perform list (Darren Sharper and Clint Ingram).
Thursday, September 2 - New Orleans Saints @ Tennessee Titans. Final night of preseason games for all teams. Last chance for bubble players to make a statement, state a case, make a mark, show that they belong, or whatever other turn of phrase floats your boat in regard to a player making the squad.
Saturday, September 4 - Rosters must be reduced to 53 for the regular season. Teams can put eight more men on the practice squad, providing they clear the waiver wire. In 2007, we kept PT and tried to pass Antonio Pittman through waivers and bring him back on the practice squad, but the Rams grabbed him up. That ended up working out ok for us.
Thursday, September 9 - Do I even need to say what happens here?

Ultimately, our first teams on O and D are what matter
I don’t want any injuries. That’s the most important thing for the 4th preseason game.
But what I love about this game is seeing the 2nd and 3rd stringers battle it out. From what I remember, PT beat out Pittman in these later preseason games in 2007.
Seeing the vikings suck doesn’t matter to me. I know the Saints are a better team. Same thing with the Mainstream media.
WHO DAT
in your mind
but you must pick one to click on, or your vote won’t be counted
It's gonna be a great year.
Need one more cut, Hans
Active PUP counts against the roster, so the Saints will have to make one more cut in the next couple days.
gotcha - thanks
we’ll keep our eyes out for that one cut – unless I miscounted the roster and we’re already there
It's gonna be a great year.
Is it bad me and Peter King are thinking alike?
It sucks for PT but the better Ivory does the less likely PT will get that big deal he wants IMO.

All i can ask for is
that we have 0 injuries, 0 first stringers on the field Thursday night, and one helluva butt woppin’ come Sep 9th.
"It's about time something like this happened." Drew Brees
Injuries and Pittman
What is the deal with the PUP players? I think we’re going to miss Sharper. No idea about Ingram but it seems that he’ll get his first test on the field with the Saints. Hope he’s good.
Antonio Pittman was cut from the Rams, btw. So we finally have our chance to get him back! ;)
surprised you don't mention...
the NFL films of the super bowl season coming out on the 8th as a important date. Pretty interested to see how commentary by Brad Pitt goes.

Can I amend one of the options...
and vote for an epic beat-down of every team we play?
PS, I got a new account—I used to be on as LSUFAN.
Devery Henderson, making absurd grabs for my teams since 2001.
Previously "LSUFAN."
It's almost time for the Vikings to be layed to rest...
….as in: douse them with gasoline, place them on a boat, push them down the Mississippi, and have Drew Brees rain flaming footballs on their hapless, desecrated corpses as they float down river.
If I remember Beau Geste correctly, a Viking funeral also involves there being a dog at thier feet. Got anyone in mind? Christopher Gates, maybe?
"Dang! The Saints won the Super Bowl!" - my wife, Meso "Happy" Hu Dat.
That is an insult to Dogs
Gates is more cockroach like in my opinion.
Football is easy if you're crazy as hell
There are about 4,500 species of cockroaches in the world
…and all of them are sending representatives to a worldwide congress, in order to draft a demand for an apology.
It was worth the wait.
I feel for Galette
You can just hear the passion in that kid’s voice. Here’s hoping he’s on the roster for the Titans game and gets one more shot to be heard. Guy showed flash in his first two games, chargers is a touch test to get to the QB. I hate Rivers with a passion, but the kid knows when to get rid of the football.
