Turk lurks for Sharper?
Jeff Duncan tweet: He needs to get on the field this week or next. @wowatkin: Triplett and Varney have Sharper getting a visit from the Turk. What say you?
For those who need it, definition here.

If it happens (which I wouldn't put it past PayLoo) we would NEED N-E-E-D another CB.
It would become our #1 priority, with a bullet.
Want to go to the Saints vs. Cowboys game? I've got an extra ticket.
Is this a vote of no confidence for Gay? If so, boom rec’d it.

It's a vote of...
low confidence for Gay, very low confidence for P Rob, no confidence for Torrence, Jenkins would be permanently moved to FS, that leaves NOTHING after Greer and Porter.
That scares me half to death.

Triplett and Varney are wrong
Sharper isn’t getting cut. Not in the near future at least. Here’s why:
1. He provides a veteran presence to not only the younger DBs but to the entire defense.
2. G-Dub likes him
3. He’s a great mentor and teacher for Jenkins
4. The media would go nuts if we cut him. Not that that would matter to Pay-Loo. Sharper is one of only three players we have that the MSM love to talk about. It would shatter their existence if we cut him.
Sharper isn’t on the cut list. They’re just giving him time to fully heal. He doesn’t need the preseason for learning the system and playing his position. He’ll be fine once fully healthy. Will he be as good as a much younger Jenkins is the only question.

Starting the season on the PUP list is far more like for Sharper than the a visit from the Turk.
It was worth the wait.

yes, but
I’m concerned that they’ve evaluated his progress and might have concluded that he won’t be in playing shape until Thanksgiving at the earliest. That’s a cut and move on situation.
Unfortunately, we won’t know this until after the fact.

Ok, but that doesn’t mean you can start drinking to it NOW.

Nah...
It’ll taste much better when it’s official on that A-List of yours…

Thanksgiving is only 10 weeks into the season or so. PUP gives you 6 for free and you can still have (I think) two more after that to practice and decide whether to activate them or not. If the price of making sure he is both A) mentoring the kids in the meantime and B) available for the home stretch is to put him on Reserve/PUP, they’ll pay that price. If they turn out to not need him after all, they can still release him in week 8 instead of putting him on IR or the active roster.
The only reason they cut and move on is if they don’t think he’ll be healthy AT ALL. Then, and ONLY then, will they cut him loose entirely and never bring him back.
Most likely, the only way we will know that he’s not coming back at all is if they put him on the coaching staff as a consultant like they did with Carney last year. Because then they are saying he won’t be healthy at all and guaranteeing he CAN’T come back all year (because of NFL regulations).
The only reason they cut and move on is if they don’t think he’ll be healthy AT ALL.
His age, and how much more quality playing time he is expected to have left, have nothing to do with the decision?

OK, sorry, I meant healthy at all this season. And I’m assuming that he will be able to perform if healthy. Because the guy is what he is — a smart, experienced player who cannot do physically everything he used to do but can make up for the vast majority of it by anticipation and experience. And that’s simply not going to change on it’s own all other things being equal. You don’t suddenly lose all ability to anticipate the play.
So if he won’t be healthy at all, yeah, they’ll move on. If not, he’s worth keeping around even if for nothing but the mentorship role. Whether they do that through PUP, IR, or coaching consultant, I don’t know. But they’ll keep him around in some fashion or another for at least one more year unless they decide that he’s completely lost everything. And they won’t, because he won’t have.
If he
cannot do physically everything he used to do,
…how can we tolerate a free safety who’s less and less able to help stop the run?

Again. Too much base salary.
Nothing personnal against Darren but If I get this straight, Loomis just lost a little bit of respect from me as a “deal-breaker”…
On a $2.5M total contract, it seems Sharper already earned $1.575M while the Saints saved $175K for him not practicing in the OTAs. Because he WILL NOT be on the roster September 9th, Saints will save another $250K. That leaves $500K going his way or the front office ($250K if he makes final 45, both game 6 and 12).
Even if he doesn’t make it (specially if he doesn’t make it) and that we’re in an uncapped year, I just think that this money would have served us better on other areas of need instead of spending it on somebody who’ll probably never step on the field again since he now lost-microsurgery- two steps…

Beg to differ...
1- Since Malcolm is on the rise for his spot, I don’t think he’s currently “monitoring” him as much as he used to. Also, it’s Vilma’s defence, not Sharper.
2- G-Dub knows he got the most from him last year and noticed Sharper got 90% of his picks against unproven QB. He also probably noticed, as I did, Darren givng up on some huge tackle the more last season went on.
3- See no.1.
4- Sharper made a fool of himself on contract talks and twittering. Because of his big mouth, I think media wants him as a contributor on their show much more then an active player.

Has PayLoo actually watched the play of our FS so far?
If he can’t play and won’t be able to come back, that’s one thing. But the only thing our FS play in the preseason so far has done is cause every opposing QB in the future to salivate about the deep ball with guaranteed no over the top help.
especially when our blitzes really aren’t getting there often enough. We blitzed the Chargers like crazy, and not too much came of it.
Devery Henderson, making absurd grabs for my teams since 2001.
Previously "LSUFAN."
I would say to that,
It might be because we are missing Porter. With our quality starters in at corner, our blitzes are MUCH more effective (see: most games last year).
Oh when Brees, marches down the field, Oh when Brees gets into the redzone, Oh how I want to see him throw a TD! Oh when Brees marches down the field.
The season hasn't begun yet.
Let’s hold our concern until the Vikes game. 1) Very little game planning goes into preseason games. It’s all about evaluating talent and not so much about winning games. 2) Gregg Williams isn’t gonna show his cards until the season starts. Why give the Vikes game film to research before Sept. 9th? Hell, G-dub is so sinister he may purposefully be showing teams a mediocre defense so the Vikes will take us lightly on week 1. At which point he’ll spring his trap. 3) Adjustments – I seem to remember many games last season (and Friday night) where the opposing offenses scored on their first drive or two and had increasingly difficult times after that. That’s because Payton and Williams know how to adjust in game.
I won’t start worrying about our D until I see them in a game that counts.

Sorry Satch, but that is exactly why i'm worried.
When our free safeties can’t even pull off the right assignment on a vanilla defense. What is to make me think they’re going to start when things get infinitely more complicated for them? It’s simple. The only thing we’re really asking these guys is to play center field in the preseason. Instead they’re constantly out of position and taking bad angles. I’m not griping about their lack of plays, i expected that due to the preseason and not showing our hand. What i expected though was for them to be playing average in mediocre D, as of yet, i haven’t seen that.
