Are You Happy With Our Cornerbacks Situation?

Are you happy with our Cornerbacks situation? Because, frankly, I'm a little concerned... ok, I'm a lot concerned.

With all this talk about releasing Sharper or putting Sharper on the PUP list combined with the [mild expletive removed] less than Super Bowl caliber play of Patrick Robinson, Leigh Torrence, and Randall Gay I think we need some help at CB.

How about you...

Star-divide

Here's what ESPN has listed for all our Defensive Backs:

CB1   Jabari Greer    Patrick Robinson    Leigh Torrence
CB2   Tracy Porter    Randall Gay             Reggie Jones

SS    Roman Harper     Pierson Prioleau    Chris Reis
FS    Darren Sharper    Malcolm Jenkins    Usama Young    Chip Vaughn

Let's assume that Darren Sharper won't get a Visit From The Turk. (definition) (I think there's a good chance he'll be on the 6 week PUP list to start the season, but I'm hoping he'll be healthy.)

...which means Malcolm Jenkins is our starting Free Safety (at least for the beginning of the season), and not available as the 3rd CB for Nickel and injury situations.

I think we can all agree that, when healthy we have one of the best starting corner tandums in the league.

But, J1K forbid and GGM cast a spell, what happens if one or both of those guys goes down?

What do you think?

How do you feel about our Cornerbacks situation?
Chill out man! We're not gonna have any injuries this year.

No worries mate! Even if we have injuries, the backups are good enough to win - even in the playoffs.

We got this! Even if we have injuries, there are decent cornerbacks sitting on their couch right now, waiting for the Saints to call.

Holy ****! Those are our backups? If Porter and/or Greer go down we're screwed.

I appreciate the positive thinking. I was going to argue but there is no argument.

I’m not “bitching”.. but it would be nice to have someone at least as competent as last years ROOKIE 3rd CB.

We don’t have that right now.

I hear what you’re saying…except that i felt Malcolm Jenkins was absolutely terrible at CB last year. He kept getting beat off the line, he grabbed and held constantly. Robinson is much quicker and fluid than MJ. Give the kid time, he’ll be fine. He made a good play against the Chargers early on, he simply didn’t keep a hold of the ball. We can’t play the ‘what if’ game. Does nobody any good.

by jeff.l.b on Aug 30, 2010 5:15 PM CDT up reply actions

You felt that way all last year about MJ, or in preseason?

TO be honest, I don’t remember last years preseason, but a) he we a nice #3 and b) he contributed GREATLY on special teams before Porter got hurt and he had to start at CB.

I do have faith in GW and Loomis, but If Porter and Greer go down (like they did last year) I’m not so sure there’s another miracle out there in FA to be had.

Wait.

Wasn’t Malcom Jenkins or 4th CB last year behind the starters and Gay? Pretty sure he was for at least most of the season before injuries happened. I think P Rob’s potential at CB is greater than Jenkins at CB. But I do believe MJ will be good safety. I’m content with our CB’s for now. I do remember MJ only looking good on special teams in preseason and early in the season but did develop better as the season went on. I think they same will be true with P Rob this year.

MJ...

couldn’t cover my Grandmother on a go route…. and she’s dead!!! P.Robinson is an upgrade as a cover corner in the NFL compared to Jenkins.

Felt that way all last year. I didn’t get the opportunity to watch preseason last year. My comments had to do with what i saw in actual games.

by jeff.l.b on Aug 31, 2010 10:43 AM CDT up reply actions

Yes.

We’ve never been as deep as we are now. Or, at least not that I can remember. We’ve got it a lot better at CB than the vast majority of other teams do.

Deep?

We’re 2 deep… 2 who I LOVE… 2 who I think are GREAT… 2 who didn’t play the entire year last year.

If we were talking Madden terms… Here are our overall stats at CB:

91 – JG
89 – TP
67 – RG
64 – PR
52 – LT
50 – RJ Who

It would be nice to have a 70+ guy in there at Nickel… like MJ was last year.

But, I’m glad you guys are felling good. I guess I’ll just have to wait and see.

Madden Ratings = crap

It is pretty much ranked by whoever is on sportscenter the most. Some rankings are baffling and just plain WTF!?

Oh when Brees, marches down the field, Oh when Brees gets into the redzone, Oh how I want to see him throw a TD! Oh when Brees marches down the field.

by Jon Banks on Aug 30, 2010 7:14 PM CDT up reply actions

(I find them to be pretty darn good actually… not perfect, certainly… but pretty good.)

And, those were MY GUESSES at what their Madden ratings who be… That’s what I’d give them.

by Dan Kelly on Aug 30, 2010 7:16 PM CDT up reply actions

OHHH

gotcha. 90% of them are good 5% are extremely underrated (draft picks and below the radar people) 5% of them are hype.

by Jon Banks on Aug 30, 2010 7:19 PM CDT up reply actions

I was bored so I went and looked at their ratings

87 – JG
85 – TP
75 – RG
75 – PR
76 – MJ
And its LT and RJ who? as they are not on the madden rosters.

you know, when you want something, and nobody can stop you from taking it, you just take it, right? I like that, but can you take it?

by shn_hldn on Aug 30, 2010 7:34 PM CDT up reply actions

so, jon08ban was right...

The drastically over-rated RG & PR…

MJ’s a 76 at corner… but he’s not at corner anymore… probably b/c he wasn’t going to get much better than that at corner.

And, yes, LT & RJ who.

JG and TP are under-rated…

(forgot to add that to the start of my reply.)

by Dan Kelly on Aug 30, 2010 7:55 PM CDT up reply actions

Yeah JG stayed the same from last year and Porter went up only 1 point.

So picking off Favre and Manning, and being one of the best CB groups in the game….gets you 1 point over last year. Meanwhile Joe Haden (Cleveland’s 1st round pick) gets an 80 simply because hes a 1st round pick. We do have to remember that the people picking these are game designers and (possible) football fans, not actual Scouts.

if we lose both of our starters in a lot of positions we will be in trouble

we can probably handle it the best at cb. maybe we have a little more depth at wr, but thats it. we will be fine.

Agreed

Gay and Robinson are alot better than most teams have at 3rd and 4th cb. Outside of the Jets with a signed Revis, I cant think of any team off the top of my head I would trade cb’s with. Even the Bengals who have an excellent set of Starters had to bring in PacMan Jones to compete at nickel and we all know how well that turned out for Dallas.

I know.

Guess we have to choose between reliable and, as for now, play-maker. Heck, he did secure two wins in the play-offfs, right?

I’ll still gladly go on Stu’s list stating we still need some help at CB. Think Saints would have drafted Robinson otherwise?

Repeat? Under construction...

by FrenchFreak on Aug 30, 2010 9:50 PM CDT up reply actions

Your right, them drafting Robinson almost seems otherworldly in their foresight.

We will just have to hope if anything goes wrong GW knows what to do. Hopefully P-Rob gets better with the season and he can be our starting nickel, so he can push Gay down the depth chart.

But its not like we were playing scrubs. It was Warner, Favre, and Manning! They are going to get theirs, you just better get yours and Porter did.

Can the real Jonathan Casillas please stand up!

Stolen

Truth is, I am happier having them in a place to steal a draft pick from us rather than the alternative.

by theprogrammerman on Aug 31, 2010 9:18 AM CDT up reply actions   1 recs

Agreed. I’m satisfied with our secondary, in terms of personnel. What I’m waiting on now — and have been since the Haslett regime — is a consistent pass rush. I honestly don’t care where it comes from, as long as it manifests itself in games. If Jeff Charleston is the only guy bringing it, then he should be starting over Alex Brown. They need to do whatever it takes to generate that “penetrate and disrupt” mindset. That’s even more important than causing turnovers, as stalled drives lead to a change of possession nearly 100% of the time.

by coldpizza on Aug 31, 2010 10:25 AM CDT up reply actions

Agreed. Our pass rush has been pathetic forcing even more blitzes that aren’t getting to the QB either.

by jeff.l.b on Aug 31, 2010 10:45 AM CDT up reply actions

Both of you are 105% right. I noticed in most of our blitzes we are sending 5-6 guys..in preseason. Now I realize we probably used only 4 plays the whole game, but if we are having to send most of our front 7 to get enough penetration to cause a sack, then we going to have a tough time doing anything this season.

by bondcrash on Aug 31, 2010 12:05 PM CDT reply actions

I am concerned

Jenkins doesn’t have my confidence so far and Young, Prioleau, Torrence, Reis, Robinson and Jones either. Gay- kind of. If we could gennerate a monster pass rush, the pressure would be off of them. But it concerns me. Obviously if the coaching staff thought we had great backup safeties, Sharper would be gone- he is unable tro play for about a third of the season. We newed him back and 100%.

I think we should cut Prioleau ( and maybe Reis) because it looks like Robinson and Jones have potential. Maybe move Jenkins or Vaughn to SS or pick someone up from another team. Torrence IMO is not good enough and I am hopeful of Chip Vaughn but still undecided about him. It really scares me if Harper gets injured – I just don’t see Prioleau or Reis cutting the mustard.
