So....Daniel or Ramsey?

Well as we know the backup QB position is running neck and neck with Daniel and Ramsey both trying to get the fanbase and Sean Payton behind them. Only one will win, the other will either get cut or used as a 3rd stringer (not likely but possible). So fanbase, who is your favorite going into the final preseason game for backup QB? Chase "Gimme a chance coach" Daniel, or Patrick "I need the money" Ramsey. Stats after the jump.

Star-divide

Chase Daniel:

@ NE game: 6 for 9, 66.7 %, 50 yards, 5.6 avg, 0 TDs, 1 INT, rushed for -4 yards on 1 attempt. QB rating: 41.2

HOU game: 15 for 21, 71.4 %, 182 yards, 8.7 avg, 3 TDs, 1 INT, 1 Sack, rushed for 9 yards on 1 attempt.

QB rating: 117.5

Patrick Ramsey:

@ NE game: 7 for 11, 63.6 %, 111 yards, 10.1 avg, 0 TDs, 0 INT. QB rating: 97.2

SD game: 10 for 18, 55.6 %, 191 yards, 10.6 avg, 1 TD, 1 INT, rushed for -1 yards on 1 attempt. QB rating: 88.0

Chase Daniel Pros: Much more accurate than Ramsey, and threw for 2 more TDs than him as well. also proved he can run the ball in case a hole opens and there is nothing downfield. Also went up against the Texans' 1st string Defense and did great. If he has great potential he can remain on the Saints roster for a good amount of time as a backup or a development project.

Chase Daniel Cons: Threw a WTF INT in the Texans game, and threw a potential game winning drive away with an INT against the Pats. Did not have the yardage Ramsey had, although the Texans game was wrapped up in the 3rd quarter and the Saints most likely ran more ( I say more likely because I don't remember).Younger and does not have much experience .

Patrick Ramsey Pros: Can throw the ball downfield, has a good arm, and racks up yardage. Older and has more experience at the game.

Patrick Ramsey Cons: 76 yards from his SD game, came from a Chris Ivory screen that beget a wonderous trucking to the endzone by the Tusk. Threw a WTF INT in the SD game.

So what say you CSC? Who has the edge going into this weekend's game?

my feelings, too. I liked Daniel from the start. Would hate to see him cut.

you know, when you want something, and nobody can stop you from taking it, you just take it, right? I like that, but can you take it?

Agreed.

Daniel, I think, is the better QB when he’s calm. I haven’t seen him sacked repeatedly though, so that’s the one thing I’m uncertain about; how he handles a bad situation.

Exactly

Ramsey is what he is. Daniel, whom some have dubbed “mini-Drew,” might actually grow into that name. Ramsey won’t.

It was worth the wait.

Depends

Is Garrett allowed to kick? I’d think he’d have stronger legs!

That being said, I’d give the back up QB nod to Chase (as I’ve been saying for quite some time!)

Agreed.

On paper, they’re almost a coin toss apart; but looking forward, Daniel can become something, Ramsey almost was something.

Daniel has to be the choice, IMO.

I agree and I rec'd it...

but… on the flip side, Ramsey has experience.

[looks in the mirror; thinks to self “Did I just say that?”]

I’m not saying I like Ramsey over Daniel… quite the opposite. I like what Daniel showed in preseason, and he most definitely has more potential.

But, if you’re asking which one will SP choose to be Drew’s #2, I’m not sure. I think SP values the NFL experience (even if it wasn’t a whole lot of winning experience).

It will be interesting to see who gets the #2 spot.

I believe they will carry 3 qb's

I believe that the NFL will only count two of those positions.
1. primary- Brees
2. Backup- Ramsey
3. emergency (does not count against the roster) Daniels

#3 QB doesn't count against the 53 man roster?

or the whatever number “active gameday roster”?

Counts against 53 man roster

does not count against game-day active roster. Lance Moore pretty much has that job as “oh Shattner, we need a QB.”

Gameday active roster is 45-man + 1 emergency QB (when applicable).

by FriarBob on Sep 1, 2010 3:49 PM CDT up reply actions

the 3rd qb does count towards the 53 man roster

but the nfl allows an emergency backup as the 46th man on gameday. he is only allowed to play after the other two get hurt. there is also an 8man practice squad, but any team in the nfl can take players from your practice squad if they sign him to their 53 man roster immediately.

by DrewBreesManCrush on Sep 1, 2010 9:22 AM CDT up reply actions

Our emergency quarterback could be Lance Moore

He can be active as a receiver, and still be put in at QB should Drew and whoever both get hurt. That’s why I wonder if we’d actually keep 3 quarterbacks.

It was worth the wait.

by MtnExile on Sep 1, 2010 9:23 AM CDT up reply actions

we could probably leave either one on the practice squad

if lance comes in at qb, sorry but ive written the game off

It’s not just your seniority. It’s also the number of games you were on the 53-man roster (whether active or not). I think Daniel may have exceeded his limit in the last category. If not, he’s close.

by FriarBob on Sep 3, 2010 4:24 PM CDT up reply actions

Well he can still do that as the 4th QB as well.

Personally though yeah I’d rather just keep Chase and let Lance be the emergency backup.

by FriarBob on Sep 1, 2010 3:50 PM CDT up reply actions

Whichever one can bide us the most time, until we’re in a position to draft a legitimate NFL backup.

Haven’t seen you much lately CP. How things are well. Curious what you consider to be a legitimate NFL backup? One would think both of those guys clearly fit the bill.

I meant someone of Ramsey’s skills set coming out of college, with Daniel’s playing years ahead of him. Best of both worlds. A future franchise QB. Not saying we need one now, I just happen to think the perfect situation for any NFL team is to have an Aaron Rodgers or Philip Rivers waiting in the wings. If either of these two guys can fill the void until then, that’s who I’d rather for the time being. Unless Brees suffers a career ending injury in the next year or so, that would more than likely spell Daniel (just because I don’t think Ramsey has much more than that left in his tank).

More of a caveat than a con, no? How can you fault Ramsey for that? Daniel has had ample opportunities to get the ball to Ivory in the flat. Where’s his gimme TD?

It looked to me

like a good defensive play…the DB was all over him and knocked the ball loose. I only saw the replay once, but it looked like Arrington had little chance to make that catch.

It was worth the wait.

by MtnExile on Sep 1, 2010 1:28 PM CDT up reply actions

hmmm...

so you’re saying the ball could have been placed better by Daniel.

very possible… if we’re thinking of the same play.

If it had been a little more inside Arrington might have been able to snag it out of the reach of the defender. But it is a game of inches, after all.

Ahh correct as usual

Shouldn’t have implied it’s a fault, just that the yardage number was higher thanks to Tusk.

It looks like they are giving the nod to Ramsey

Ramsey will start 1st half and Daniel will start 2nd half. Looks like it is Ramsey’s job to lose.

Either that or

They want to give Ramsey another shot to see if he can outshine Daniel’s performance.

by mknkachow on Sep 1, 2010 12:33 PM CDT up reply actions

IMO

We keep Daniel. Higher completion % and 3 TDs to 2 Ints. I think one of those interceptions wasn’t his fault. Ramsey has more yards but 76 yard gain off of Ivory is alot off of a throw to the sideline at the line of scrimmage. Plus that’s his only TD. He also threw that wretched interception(way short and kinda lofted it leaving time for defenders to get there) and overthrew Roby on what wouldve probably been a TD pass if not. Daniel has hit his receivers in the #s for the most part and has had a big gain throw or two. He has that chance to be a great undrafted QB whereas Ramsey’s time has passed for the most part. I like Daniel better anyways and have never liked Ramsey too much but I felt impartial when they were battling for the job and I feel that Chase won it. Still one more game to go to possibly change all of that though

From what I understand, Jeff Fisher is planning on playing his starters for the first half tonight. This seems like it would work out as an advantage for Ramsey, who is slated to start the first half. Think about it. If Ramsey bombs and Daniel does well against the scrubs, it’s likely Daniel’s job going into the regular season. That would be the only scenario that favors Daniel, though. If both bomb, Daniel’s “obviously is not ready” and Ramsey “at least has starting experience”. If Ramsey does well and Daniel bombs, it’s basically etched in stone. If both do well, Daniel “has come a long way … we’d just like to see more of what he can do against top flight competition, before having to rely on him in a game that matters.” Color me over-analytical, but I think the deck is being stacked against Daniel. Might not work out that way, but if he was truly the front runner in this QB derby, would he still be kicking it with the scrubs in Game 4?

Regardless, I think we’re keeping both. Old man Carney’s not typing up a roster spot this season.
