Minnesota 9 @ New Orleans Saints 14: Who Dat Say!?

Whodat12-7_medium

Welcome to the first regular-season installment of Who Dat Say?!, your pre-eminent post-game source of all the news, views, quotes, tweets, videos, and whatnot from Saints games.

The Saints took on the Vikes last night, and what a 14-9 victory it was.  Not the high-scoring shootout that some expected, but a hard-fought game with scoring brilliance, lots of killed drives, inexplicable missed field goals, a blocked extra point, a defense that picked Favre off once, did ok stopping the run, and that really saved the game when the offense disappeared for long stretches of time.  And how nice was it watch PT Bruiser run out the clock for most of that last drive.

Make the jump and read on...

that should settle it

we are just a better team than the Vikings and we have beaten them twice and both times because the defense played well but in different ways.

It was hard fought game. I didn't like the lulls in the offense.

When the offense got their act together they moved the ball fairly well. I hope this is not another year of the kicker costing us games. I think Hartley will be ok. Hire John Carney not as a player but as an assistant to mentor him. Just remind him he needs to aim for the fleur freaking de lis. I’m so happy we are again on the good side of this ugly game.

holder issues

I think maybe Morstead and Hartley are not in sync. I noticed a few kicks in the pre-season that Hartley seemed to barley make. Maybe Morstead holding this year has something to do with it. Hopefully those two iron it out and get in sync.

Hartley said in a statement that the holds on both kicks were perfect. He just missed them.

Yeah I agree. He should never try to pass the blame off. But I think in this case, had he, it might have been fair. I actually thought the snaps were a bit off in both cases. Go back and watch ‘em, maybe I’m wrong, but they looked slightly less than optimal, especially for Kyle. He’s usually money on that.

Running Game

I have to say, I was heartened by the fact that they got the running game going in the second half, especially against a team with as good a run D as the Vikings usually have. The dropped passes were a concern, and no, it wasn’t exploding out of the gate like against the Lions last year, but I feel like this might have been more important. For 4 years I have heard that all you have to do is stop the Saints from scoring and you win, and I don’t know that anyone can say that any more. Hats off to the D in the second half, and again to Payton (and GW I am sure) for the amazing halftime adjustments. For the last year and change I feel the Saints have consistently out-coached their opponents, and that was in evidence again. While I am concerned about the inability to make in-game adjustments (or at least the appearance of that inability), once they go in for the half, the Saints seem to own the second half of games. A little better hands (not something you hear often about the Saints) and this really would not have been close. Congratulations to the Saints, and I hope that the long rest will let them knock a little extra rust off of the offense and be on top of the 49ers next week.

I loved this game.

Yes, the offense was not at its best, but you can’t even imagine that won’t straighten itself out. Brees and company will be just fine. In any case, it was clear that we were adjusting to the Vikes talented d-line, Brees was getting rid of the ball in a second or two, trading some accuracy and extra reads for making sure he didn’t get killed. Good plan, and it worked.

Hartley proved himself to be human. So he’s not going to hit 100% this season…he won’t hit 0% either.

Meanwhile, things we might have been generally nervous about looked really good last night. Run defense was more than adequate, despite one of the better running backs being the focus of their offense (and in comparison to our seemingly starting out by spotting the enemy a 50 yard rushing touchdown on the first series of each game in the later part of last year). Our linebackers were generally outstanding, including in coverage. And our corners were not suspect going in, but good lord did they look good. How many well thrown balls did we slap away last night, with no interference?

I think we can look forward to our offense getting back into form, and our defense looks like it is improved over last year. WHO DAT!

by GlackAndBold on Sep 10, 2010 8:22 AM CDT reply actions

hats off to Harper

I know Harper’s pass defense is not his strong suit but GW put Harper covering Visanthe Shiancoe exclusively in the second half. That seemed to be big because Shiancoe’s production went down in the second half. In fact in general, pass coverage seemed to be damn good because Favre didn’t seem to have very many opportunities to hit wide open receivers in the game.

by narco301 on Sep 10, 2010 9:08 AM CDT up reply actions

Hard fought

is right. We have a target on our back this year and every opponent is going to give everything they have. Hats off to the O-Line, even though some plays were broken, they worked their tails off. The victory wasn’t “sexy” (high scoring long bombs) but it proves one thing… Our Saints can win the low scoring, smash-mouth sytle of football too. Finding a way to win is Gold. Who Dat!

by CajunCavern on Sep 10, 2010 8:46 AM CDT reply actions

Objectively speaking...

I don’t think Favre was that showing his age at all. I’m not a homer and the truth is, his receivers where just everywhere. Did you see Harvin misrun his route. The announcer read it wrong, Brett was actually complaining. Harvin even slowed down on one route and Brett almost got it picked. So, I’m not feeling as great about this as everyone else and I’m usually a, “A win is a win” guy. And it is but…as homer-like the purple fans can get, they’re right. They’ll prob be 3-2 for the first 5 but once they get their groove they’ll give people some trouble. I do think we’ll be fine and make the necessary adjustments but we just better do it and not come out pass happy like that again. When we are balanced we run thangs!

we played pretty...

conservative in the fourth once we figured out we could run on their d. No need for big passing plays when we were running to efficiently at the end of the game.

I know everyone expects 50 pts a game, but even with their depleted 2ndary, they are still a top defense.

the 14 point total says one important thing

that the defense can hang and the Saints can win even without scoring a ton of points. I read that the 14 points was the lowest point total that the Saints ever got under Payton and still pulled off the win. That has got to say that our defense has improved big time. In years past we needed more than just 14 points to win. With that said, getting the win speaks volumes about our D.

Scary, scary game last night.

I won’t get into the torrid of things that were just…well not good. So in the spirit of “if you can’t say nothing nice, don’t say anything at all” mode….Roby was money last night on coverage. there are some real spoiled saints fans out there

maybe it was all the adult beverages i consumed before the game, but it really didn’t seem like we looked terrible (hartley’s missed kicks aside- and so many kickers around the league have off games like that). our offense was a little off-rhythm, but we were playing a team that — i thought — was supposed to have a really solid d. jared allen, who sports commentators love to gush over as one of the best ends in the league, had little-to-no-impact in the game. brees looked sharp, and his passes were super-crisp – wideouts need to secure them a little better, but there weren’t any egregious miscommunications or other reasons to worry. our defense was exceptional, and i liked that we didn’t blitz like crazy.

sure, we COULD have lost – but that’s true in any game. don’t know if y’all remember this, but we used to score lots of points and still lose. i don’t mind that we “only” scored 2 TDs (ask raiders or rams fans how they’d feel if they could score twice per game), and i think in the age of fantasy football and the expectations based on our previous performance, there are a lot of sour winners out there.

way i see it, we’re undefeated and have already played probably the best team we’ll face in the nfc. WHO DAT!

by jful on Sep 10, 2010 11:06 AM CDT reply actions

I couldn't agree more...

about the sense of entitlement and expectations of some in Who Dat Nation. A Win vs a good NFC opponent is a Win. I’ve already had to stomach the belly-aching of some of my Purple and Gold brothers after an LSU victory demanding to fire the coach and change the QB. Way to support the team, couyons. As fans we cannot fire the coach nor change the roster, but instead of moaning and complaining we should support the team we have. And while the Black and Gold absolutely have the potential to repeat, I think we’re getting way ahead of ourselves to “expect” it. Enjoy the ride and each hard fought victory.

I am not a die hard LSU fan but my family is so I have watched a few games.

I don’t like Jefferson, on an NFL scale he seems to be a Jason Campbell, average to above average. Les Miles meanwhile is a great coach, but not on the GM side. And is a horrrrrid time manager. Basically he is the opposite of Brad Childress (minus the horrid time manager they both suck at that). Not a die hard follower so I may be wrong, but my 2 pennies nonetheless.

Okay questions...sorry!

I had someone tell me the game was boring but I didn’t feel that way, I thought it was exciting because it was so grimy and every single play/yard counted. I feel like high scoring shoot outs are fun but real football is played in the trenches. Is this just me being inexperienced or was it really just a boring game?

Also just by logic shouldn’t we expect to see a lot more of these games this season because everyone is going to bring their A game (however much of an A obviously determined by team) rather than the high scoring ones? I know some things need mending like the 3 dropped balls and missed kicks that would have put us a lot further ahead but it seems like we need to prepare ourselves for excitement that will probably be different that last season. No?

Breesus Is My Homeboy

by SarahT on Sep 10, 2010 4:12 PM CDT reply actions

I didn’t find the game boring…more like hectic. I can understand some of the complaints, though. Most people find 3 and out games to be boring. They’re couch watchers and Fantasy players who just want to see the scoreboard light up. A lot of people can’t get into a good defensive or grind it out game for some reason. For me it was an enjoyable game to watch and not boring in the least (though a few more points and less dropped balls would have been preferable).

I agree with you in regards to expecting a lot more of these games, but not necessarily for the reasons you mentioned. Everyone brings their A game, regardless of who they play; they’re professionals after all. The thing for me though, is that we play a lot better defenses this year. Vikings, 49ers, Pittsburgh, Ravens, Bengals…all are outstanding top 10 defenses that really bring the pressure.

by jeff.l.b on Sep 10, 2010 5:15 PM CDT up reply actions

this was exactly how we used to win all the time

when it was Mora, Carl Smith, and the Dome Patrol.

The defense was bend but don’t break, they’d make the other guys punt a lot, or get a turnover, and then the offense would sputter, drives would end at the spot where the turnover occurred and if we were close enough, Morten would kick us 3.

It's gonna be a great year.

by Hans Petersen on Sep 10, 2010 6:28 PM CDT up reply actions

it was a little boring but probably moreso for a person that isn't as into the strategy of football

I was into it early on but caught myself dosing later. I have my times when i just want to see us score and there’s time I’m more into the strategy and mechanics of it all. I don’t think logic entails what we will see in the NFL when one team’s A game is another teams C game and vice versa and thus there will be blowouts and games like this. I don’t think it’s that logical at all.

Logic (and statistics) tells us one of the reasons why superbowl champs do not repeat the next year is that every team brings their “A game” against them. Yes that A game may not be much in comparison but they are still going to face a larger amount of A games than they did before. It’s simply about mentality. So when looking at the larger amount of A games being thrown their way you will probably find more games considered very technical and less large numbers of points on the board. Not in all cases but you understand. There is logic behind it, that is why the statistics are the way they are.

Jeff.l.b believes it will be less about that and more about the defenses we are facing this season. For me I think it will be both, therefore creating more intense games, less crazy exciting shootouts.
