Adrian Peterson should not have disappeared late. It’s easy to say Peterson should have been used more — and, of course, he should have. He had 19 carries, all in the first three quarters, and touched the ball just once — a short reception — in the fourth quarter. But the Vikings ran only eight plays in the final quarter, and had the ball but four minutes. Still, I believe if the Vikes had kept trying to pound Peterson, who averaged 4.6 yards per rush, instead of trying to force a rusty Brett Favre into being the difference-maker in the fourth quarter, Minnesota would have won that game
M-E, more to the point:
Childress, on the other hand, is incapable of taking advantage of what the opponent gives him. Adrian Peterson ran well, gaining a healthy 4.5 yards per carry. Yet in the second half, beginning when the Vikings actually led the game, Peterson got only six carries. But he still gained 30 yards—that’s a 5.0 average. He was actually more effective in the second half! Yet instead of possibly riding Peterson to a tough victory, the rusty and ineffective Brett Favre passed twice as often as Peterson ran: 12 times, completing only 4. Along the way there was also a sack and a holding penalty on another attempted pass play. Some of that may be on Favre checking out of running plays—who can say?—but if that’s the case, Childress is cowardly in addition to clueless.
Just as sure as you're born
Look out pretty mama, I'm on the road again.
yeah, it wasn't rocket science
childress is a fool and i figured everyone would be all over it. i couldn’t go to sleep thursday night without blasting him though.
Nice and intense trip topped by a win but...
Something kept bugging me on my way back home….
Why didnt Payton go for two after our second touchdown?
We miss and, at 13-9, Vikes still need two FG or a TD to win. We go up 15-9 and you force them to go for a TD.
What am I missing?
Repeat? Under construction...
Saints scored the 2nd TD in the middle of the 3rd qtr,
And that’s generally too early to go for two. For example- we go for two and miss, and we’re up 13-9. Vikes score a TD and go for one, and they’re up 16-13. But if we go for one, we’re up 14-9, and then the Vikes score, they NEED to get a 2pt conversion to be up by 3. Then (if they fail) we can win with a FG, instead of taking it to OT with a FG.
It was the right move.
I think you need to recheck your math
"Why do you even ponder passing? I mean, you can take a knee and try a 56 yard field goal! This is not Detroit man, this is the Superbowl!" -- Paul Allen's call after Tracy Porter intercepted Brett Favre in NFCCG
And I've heard Payton mention that he doesn't really start using the "go for 2 chart" until the 4th quarter at least
Those early in the game “go for 2” plays by Haslett in his tenure drove me CRAZY. He would do that all the time, whether leading or trailing in a game, and then once he did it once and failed (which seemed to happened mostly), he’d keep trying for 2 after that to make up for the earlier failure. If I had known Stu then, I’d have been screaming, “GAAAAAA!!!!! Haslett!!!!! Idiot child!!!!”
It's gonna be a great year.

The best example I know of why going for 2 early is a bad idea
The Panthers’ Super Bowl. They score in the 3rd quarter to make it 21-16, and John Fox figures, “Hey, if we get 2 points we can tie it with a field goal!” True; but it’s still early. You might actually not need to settle for a 21-21 tie. Sure enough, they miss the conversion; sure enough, they do score a touchdown to take the lead. Now it’s 22-21, and they need a 2-point conversion to make up for missing the last time. But they don’t get it.
Then, New England scores a touchdown, and their 2-point conversion succeeds. 29-22. When the Panthers score another touchdown late in the 4th, it only ties the game, instead of putting them ahead 31-28 (I say that because I can’t believe Belichick would have gone for two if the score had been 27-24 instead of 27-22). And that means that when the Patriots drive for a field goal, the 3 points win the game instead of merely tying it.
A perfect example of how a dumb head coach (and yes, Fox is a dullard) can screw up a game by trying to get cute.
It was worth the wait.
as Stu would say
sing it!
It's gonna be a great year.
