Reggie Bush Forfeits Heisman Trophy

Photo

Reggie Bush's has released a statement and made the decision to give up his 2005 Heisman Trophy. The Saints have taken a position of support as Greg Bensel tweeted this...

GregBensel Reggie makes tough decision to forfiet his title as Heisman winner in 2005; Reggie has the total support of the Saints and all of our fans!

Here is the full statement from Reggie, via the New Orleans Saints official website...

"One of the greatest honors of my life was winning the Heisman Trophy in 2005. For me, it was a dream come true.

But I know that the Heisman is not mine alone. Far from it. I know that my victory was made possible by the discipline and hard work of my teammates, the steady guidance of my coaches, the inspiration of the fans, and the unconditional love of my family and friends. And I know that any young man fortunate enough to win the Heisman enters into a family of sorts. Each individual carries the legacy of the award and each one is entrusted with its good name.

It is for these reasons that I have made the difficult decision to forfeit my title as Heisman winner of 2005. The persistent media speculation regarding allegations dating back to my years at USC has been both painful and distracting. In no way should the storm around these allegations reflect in any way on the dignity of this award, nor on any other institutions or individuals. Nor should it distract from outstanding performances and hard-earned achievements either in the past, present or future.

For the rest of my days, I will continue to strive to demonstrate through my actions and words that I was deserving of the confidence placed in me by the Heisman Trophy Trust. I would like to begin in this effort by turning a negative situation into a positive one by working with the Trustees to establish an educational program which will assist student-athletes and their families avoid some of the mistakes that I made. I am determined to view this event as an opportunity to help others and to advance the values and mission of the Heisman Trophy Trust.

I will forever appreciate the honor bestowed upon me as a winner of the Heisman. While this decision is heart-breaking, I find solace in knowing that the award was made possible by the support and love of so many. Those are gifts that can never be taken away."

I answered yes

But really only because I like Reggie, and think he earned that trophy on the field in college.

It seems like he did make mistakes, but it’s really awful that the types of mistakes he made (accepting gifts for himself and his family) are considered “worse” than things like performance enhancing drugs or just general college douchebaggery, which should be considered more wrong.

Agreed

I’ll take a poor opportunistic but good guy like Reggie over these cats that come into the league today. Who forget where they came from and have super entitlement complexes. It bother’s me because it’s a taint against him. Even my fellow SC fans are hatin on the dude, forgetting about how much they bragged about him while he was here…

(sigh) hope he makes people forget about it on the field.

I answered no

Because whatever happened before, he is a Saint now, and while I applaud him for taking one last hit to remove it forever from the media spotlight. It doesn’t lower his onfield accomplishments in my eyes in the least, and personally, I think the NCAA’s attitude on this is rather draconian, and unrealistic for as much money as these sports bring into the college systems. Reggie will run just as well next week as he did this week, and the Heisman means nothing to the people that will be trying to stop him.

NCAA

has nothing to do with the Heisman. The Heisman is now sponsored by ESPN and they allow ESPN Commentators to vote and is inherently biased.
From Wikipedia

For Heisman voting purposes, the nation is divided into six regions—each of which get 145 votes. Put another way, each region gets exactly 16.67 percent of the votes. However, each region does not constitute an even one-sixth of the population. Three regions (Far West, Midwest, and Mid-Atlantic) have larger populations than that – and three have less (Northeast, South, and Southwest). In fact, the Far West has the greatest population at 21.1% of the country and the Northeast has the least – 11.9%.

It's a sad thing that it's come this far.

Frankly my enjoyment of college football has pretty much disappeared. It’s become nothing more than a high end money grab for major college institutions using student athletes for their own personal gain while holding them down from receiving anything in return. Big time colleges and the NCAA proclaim over and over that it’s big business while at the same time slamming the athletes claiming it’s all about their education alone. Sad times.

Good move by Reggie

Best to move on from it. What he did (allegedly, although his statement seems to indicate he was guilty of some infraction) was wrong, but there’s no need for this to become a further distraction in his life. I’m sure it was a tough decision, but the right one.

That doesn’t change my opinion that Tony Dungy needs to shut his sanctimonious pie hole.

Good statement and good job on getting ahead of the situation if it was going to be taken from him. I like the fact he is establishing an educational program for student-athletes and their families. If this comes to fruition, maybe a lot of good will come from this.

And is it just me, or does his statement sound like something Drew would come up with?

And poll question should ask, “Does this show Reggie having class?”

by BRSaintsFan on Sep 14, 2010 4:13 PM CDT reply actions

Reggie's a classy dude

I don’t know why I keep hearing people saying he’s classless, selfish, and even a THUG. Have people heard this kid at press conferences. Look, for PC reasons I’m gonna say this in a nice way. (See one of Chris Rocks comedy skits for a blunt explanation of what I’m gonna say) Reggie isn’t the stereotypical black dude (notice I said “stereotypical” and not typical) he’s what we call a “regular” black dude. He speaks good english, isn’t given to passions, and surpasses the stereotypes. He’s smart, got good grades in school, and his parents were on him enough to keep him out of trouble (except for this USC thang but you know what I mean). Contrary to the media’s depictions, when someone exhibits different from what we may see from say, a Pacman Jones or somebody…people are surprised. BTW I don’t think you are saying this BR, just see this all over the internet and it’s funny to me. Makes me wonder how many people actually have friends that look like Reggie or I, that don’t act like they’re in a rap video 24/7.

I care in the sense that he undoubtedly earned it on the field that year.

Sometimes the choice for the Heisman Trust must be difficult, but that year it was pretty clear he was head and shoulders above everyone else, regardless of what happened vs Texas.

I think it’s a classy way to deal with it, even if it would inevitably be taken from him.

by NOLACuse on Sep 14, 2010 4:15 PM CDT reply actions

Well...Vince Young and Texas Longhorn fans would probably beg to differ on that.

Personally, I don’t think that he should have been forced to give up his Heisman, since it was Pete Carroll and the USC boosters who should have been held to the carpet more than he was…and I don’t see them attempting to take away Carroll’s big $$$$ contract.

But, that was a classy move, especially with the scholarship proposal….now let’s see Reggie take some of that anger out on Saints opponents this year.

Oh..and Vince Young’s now talking serious smack about how if the DAC offered him the Heisman that year, that he’d take it.

I hope they actually do the work together to help future athletes in this area and that schools and the NCAA do as well, and that it really makes a difference.

All I would worry about is how it affects his mindset, game preparation and performance, but I don’t think there’s any way to truly know if it does impact those things. I’m sure that I and other media folks will speculate…

And Pat Y actually wrote something decent about it here. He will probably be the most famous Heisman Trophy winner (except for possibly the murderer).

Vanessa Williams was the only Miss America to ever have her title taken away (for nude pictures taken before she won the “honor”) and she’s the only one that most people even remember.

If nothing else, it was a classy move by Reggie because it took the Heisman Committee off the hook by not forcing them to make a decision they would have been criticized for no matter what they did.

The real culprit is the NCAA with their mom and apple pie bulls**t. Big time college football is BIG business. The only difference between them and BP is they figured out a way to not let their grunt employees make any money. The NCAA’s motto should be… “no bribes will be tolerated except those approved or intentionally overlooked by us”.

From a purely selfish and fantasy football point of view...

if you have Reggie on your team, start him this week. He’s gonna be highly motivated to put forth an excellent game and Payton will most likely figure him in greatly in the game plan to give him that opportunity. I know all about the 49ers stout D and all, but I don’t think it’s gonna matter that much. He’s gonna take out his frustration on losing the Heisman on the 49ers.

To all of those who say they don't care...

take a look at this pic:

I only care because I like Reggie and I know this must be heart-breaking for him. Imagine yourself getting that Heisman or something else in life you value greatly and then having to give it back. Yes, Reggie and his family should have exercised better judgment, but the program at USC at the time seemed to almost invite those sort of dealings with agents. Had someone offered me that money, I can’t say I’d have turned it down. I probably would have taken it. Hell, with the way my finances are now, I may take a measly $10K for my mother. She’s had a good life. Maybe being sold into slavery would do her some good.

Just kidding, Mom. I love you too much. :)

I'm ambivalent towards the Heisman

but I can see how it’s important to the college players. Once you start playing with the big boys, however, it’s time to put it away. I think Reggie realizes this (or he’s getting advice to do so), and I think it’s the best move for him to make. Fine, you want to drag me through the mud over some BS and take your award back? You can have it.

Personally, I don’t care much about college football. I don’t have time to watch it, and the whole thing is based on hypocrisy anyway. In my mind, football has nothing to do with college, and college has nothing to do with football. I don’t fault the players for playing or coaches for coaching, but don’t tell me it’s about education, except for a football education.

by CoachOfEarl on Sep 14, 2010 6:33 PM CDT reply actions

Why should I care about his Heisman?

I know that it’s important and all, and clearly Reggie made some poor choices during his college days. But at this point in his career and his life, what difference does it really make? I think the way he decided to forfeit the trophy before being asked and the statement he released show just what kind of stand-up player and man he has become. Reggie is certainly on the right team—he may have made some mistakes, but he is truly a Saint!

I voted No

Because it’s gone now and there’s nothing that can be done about that. And we still got Reggie, so I care about him doing well and f@#^ the Heisman Trust and NCAA.

I guess that kind of sounds like a I do care a little, huh?

Point/Counterpoint

On the one hand, has Reggie ever once just admitted it? He speaks elliptically about “the persistent media speculation regarding allegations” and “the mistakes that I made,” but I haven’t yet seen him just say, “Okay, yeah, I did it, it’s all true. Sorry.”

But on the other hand: so what? Maybe Reggie doesn’t deserve a Heisman, which is given to the player who brings in the most coin to the NCAA in a given season, but he does deserve some sort of award for being smart enough to game the system and provide for his family. I mean, other “student-athletes” get cars; this dude got a house!

And also for bringing down Pete Carroll.

It was worth the wait.

I voted no

because this revision of history is crap. I’m on record as saying that Vince deserved it in the first place, but Reggie got it, so let’s move on. So what now, do they mail it to Vince with Reggie’s name scratched out and his name written in with a sharpie? I would’ve loved for Vince to win the Heisman that year, but we got the crystal football instead, so I’m quite happy with the way things turned out. I feel bad for Reggie because he seems like a good kid and has been nothing but a hard worker and good teammate since he’s been on the Saints and as Vince said himself, he won it fair and square.

So everybody gets screwed in this deal (except Pete Carroll of course, who just happened to walk out just in time with a sackful of money. Crazy coincidence, huh?)

Aww Bevo...

Objectively speaking you really feel like Vince didn’t deserve it? I mean come on! Yeah, Vince was sick but not nearly 600 yards vs Fresno St. Sick!

just like any other year

you can make arguments for more than one player… ultimately it comes down to a popularity contest (also see 2009 nfl mvp voting). both bush and vince should know that nobody will ever forget that season or that rose bowl. by far the best sporting event ive ever witnessed (when i didnt have a horse in the race).

I would never say that Reggie DIDN’T deserve it, just that Vince deserved it more… we can have that discussion if you want.

Ok

I know I said I don’t care, but really that’s very un-empathetic of me to say that. I’m sure Reggie had a couple of sleepless nights over the whole thing, and as much as I don’t give a damn about NCAA and it’s stupid rules, I’m sure he does very much so. He EARNED that Heisman, he knows it and everyone else does too. It’s not like he took any performance enhancing drug to make him better. In ’05 he was the Best! And NO-ONE can take that away.

by BigTMill on Sep 15, 2010 1:12 AM CDT reply actions

i agree

he was the best paid athlete in amateur football '05

Just tired of Reggie not owning up to his mistakes (and letting everyone else defend him) . I’m still waiting on Reggie to come forward and write a book about it now (at least give us Saints fans some closure to this ridiculous situation he has forced upon us). But with Reggie vacating the award now, no one will be able to receive it now. Why can’t you find anything wrong with an athlete who is getting paid playing with athletes who don’t? That’s just wrong. Period. No matter who’s cousin he is, still wrong. What if VY was the one who got the Heisman and got paid? Oh we wouldn’t hear the last of it from you, but it’s wrong if we have problems with your cousin? Child, please.

Nope I wouldn't care if VY or anybody did it

I’m just like that. It’s not that big of a deal to me. I’m not a legalistic person. Now , if it was steroids I’d have some funny comments to make but even then, I really don’t care that much. Never have never will. But I like how you presume that I’d make a big deal about it…nice!

He broke US law

I pay my taxes, why shouldn’t everyone else. What would be the tax on $600,000.00? Just saying, what I want to know is why he stop at $600,000.00? Was that all he could get? or did he just wake up and say I’m gonna be legit from this point forward? Some NFL players don’t make that much, especially with numbers like Reggie’s. Another thing, we don’t know that the opposition wasn’t paid to lay down versus Reggie? If they got to him, what makes you so naive they couldn’t get to others? I know if I had paid Reggie I would at least try to pay others to make Reggie look good?

And if

he hadn’t won the heisman you or nobody else would even care or know about it. If you know anything about street life, I mean REAL street life and street cats like Larry Lake you know he got taxed, just not in a way you know. And if you think he’s the only cat making money or even that he was the highest paid in ‘05 I think you might be the naive one. The question I have is why does Carroll or Davis get to walk away from this unscaved? I’m sorry too for VY to even want it at this point is a little sad to me. I mean I should have won most likely to succeed in high school. The cat who won is now a drugged out drunk and I’m doing alright so can I go back and get that too? If anything I hope this shines a light to change the current NCAA system cause trust me it’s broke!

why you acting like you don’t know? If you spent any time in the Calio, The Magnolia, B.W. or any of the lower 9’s you know. And you know that Reggie got taxed messing with Lake and the rest of them Bloods.

Still not a big deal in my mind. Shn, looking at your exchange with BigTMill here, I’m really surprised at how serious you’re taking this. Let it go man, and quit hatin on Reggie!

I’d like to think the people who haven’t chimed in on this thread don’t care so much or enough to chime in. Above all I also don’t think anyone cares what one person doesn’t want to hear on a thread where PLENTY of others do. The blog world doesn’t work like that…I hear ya though. I’d say just ignore these posts…this is my personal opinion, it’s nothing against you or anyone personally though.

I answered yes

because I think it gives the NCAA an easy way out of this situation. The award was won with his performance on the field, and unless there were steriods in the money and benefits his parents took that magically made it into Reggies body undetected, he earned that Heisman the same way every other winner did. Giving the award back, although a very classy act on Reggies part, does nothing to solve the real problem. Athletes need to be paid for their services, instead of just being used to line the coffers of the school’s athletics department. A four year scholarship should be a four year CONTRACT for athletes, with the best contracts going to the best talent, just like the pros. This whole ‘amature’ sports thing is a sham, and we all know it. If it’s really supposed to be amature, stop putting the games on national television and stop selling team merchandise. Stop charging admission and over charging for snacks. If it’s really supposed to be amature, make it a rec league with only the students that get in on their academic merits, and stop putting students in the newspaper and on ESPN when they select a team to play for. Notice, I said team, not school. If it were really about the school, the best athletes would all be found in the Stanfords and MIT’s, Pepperdines and Ivy League Colleges, and they’d all graduate. The NCAA is getting a free pass with Reggie volunteering to give up the award he earned on the field, and despite his intentions, he really isn’t doing anything to uphold the reputation of the award.

//end rant

In the beginning, Mr. T created the heavens and the earth. And Mr. T said, "Let there be fools"; and there were fools. And Mr. T saw that the fools were bad; and pitied them.

Interesting fact of the day: Mr. T once beat a man to death with his own corpse.
