I Miss Losing!
Now that I have your attention, please hear me out.
No, I don’t really miss losing. What I miss is people who were not Saints fans at all and wouldn’t raise an eyebrow to a Sunday game, who are all of a sudden Who Dat crazy to stop talking to me about the Saints. I’m not exactly talking about traditional bandwagon jumpers, as in fans who jump from one team to the next (whoever is winning at the time), but more to the fair-weathered Saints fans who have always "claimed" to be Saints fans, but don’t really know jack-squat about the Saints. You know these people... you’re related to them.
This is why I enjoy coming here to CSC because the majority know this team and know football. You guys (and gals) didn’t just put on a black and gold t-shirt, slap on a foam finger and anoint yourselves experts. Before last year these fans I speak of would rather go hunting on a Sunday afternoon when you asked if they’re going to watch the game, but now, they are right smack dab in your living room! You could tell them that Jeremy Shockey is our backup QB if Brees gets hurt and they would believe you. They know the Who Dat chant, but couldn’t name our O-line to save their lives.
I remember 2005 when we went 3-13 and it was just me and my brother in-law watching the games and talking about the games. Now I get opinions from the "Housewives of Lafayette." (rolls eyes)
I guess losing is not worth packing up the family and moving to St. Louis or Detroit. Can’t you just imagine the diehard Lions fan if the Lions win it all in, say, the next 20 years? They’d be asking their neighbors "Where were you when we were losing?"
Maybe I just want my living room full of knowledgeable fans....what are you guys doing this year? (lol)
* * *
Note: To the sarcasm impaired, this is tongue-in-cheek.

Personally
I love the versatility of having Shockey as our back-up QB. Although i will say that i am not thoroughly convinced of using Hartley as our back-up Left Tackle.
Ha. That made me laugh out loud. I know quite a few of the fair weather/band wagon jumpers. One most notably has been a fan of the: Steelers, Patriots, Colts and Saints in the last few years. There seems to be a theme to those teams doesn’t there?
Football is easy if you're crazy as hell
As long is the DOME is filled with loud screaming WHO DATS this weekend we should be glad…yeah it sucks we didnt have all this support the whole time but that I guess is how life is? right? kick em when there down…raise em up when there winning!
Been going through the loosing myself for years bro….Its been funny to see all the bandwagoners just in my own family AHAHAHAHAHA!

I've been through it all!!
And you mentioned the 2005 season. That was the year when I told my family that I could not waste 3 hours on a Sunday watching the Aaron Brooks/Jim Haslett circus. We were so God awful that year, I nearly couldn’t take it anymore. Then hope happened. Sean Payton came in and got rid of the trash, Drew Brees came in as leader and a respectful member of the city.
It’s what the Saints have been missing for almost 40 years. A new attitude and a new culture. Even when we lose a game under Sean Payton, Drew Brees, I’ll take it over a Jim Haslett win any day. Because this club is not of “loser” mentality. They always want to improve even after their best games. Now that’s a winning team, even after a loss. The city couldn’t ask for more than that.
My wife claims that year (2005) that I would yell at the TV
and threaten to stop watching… and so one day she asked me to take her to the store during the game (just to test me, I think) and I actually DID. But, as has been told to me, I was found out in the car listening to our a**-whooping on da radio. She says the Saints are my “L’autre Femme” (the other woman). Now I got my grandkids saying “GEAUX SAINTS!” It’s been fun.

My son
Has taken to answering the phone. He says “Hi…Who Dat?”
Keep in mind that i am in Canada and we don’t hear “Who Dat” very often up here. I could not be prouder :)

nice!
What part of Canada, ay? (I have a good friend in White Rock, BC and another one near Toronto… neither are Saints fans, unfortunately.)

When I was younger, I used to lie in bed and practice catching a Nerf football with my feet. You know, just in case I was ever knocked flat on my back in the endzone, during the waning seconds of the Super Bowl. Needless to say, that drill hasn’t paid off just yet.

There are plenty of fairweather fans in New Orleans and every other NFL city. Hell, even now I know a few guys that call themselves Saints fans that would rather watch the games from their sofa, than accept a free ticket to Sunday’s action. THOSE are the Freddie Freeloaders I’d love to see left out in the cold. I’m looking forward to the day when all NFL games are carried on pay-per-view only. It will eventually come to that. That’s when these sad sack momma’s boys will be forced to either ante up … or go back to doing yardwork Sundays while listening to the game on a freaking Walkman.
"I was not on the boat in question" -Darren Sharper
Actually
The NFL is charging for listening to the games already.
"I don't think we're the team with the target on our backs. They're not gunning for us, we're gunning for them. We're the ones with the scope." - Saints defensive tackle Sedrick Ellis
On a national level, yes. I meant no free local access whatsoever based on sellouts. Think sold out rock concert. If you’re neither in attendance, nor willing to pay for the televised and/or broadcasted event, you’re basically SOL. It will eventually come to that.
"I was not on the boat in question" -Darren Sharper
I will be glad when it's been a few years
And I have proved to others I am serious. I understand people’s confusion and calling me a bandwagon jumper. The people that know me the most know when I truly care about something I am 100% in or not at all.
Sadly though I lie to people I don’t know when they ask me questions. They want to know if I am from La and when I say no they want to know when and why I became a fan. I say in 2006 and because my dad is (which is true). It’s just too long and weird of a story to explain to people I don’t know. I know it’s retarded though ;(

From your posts that I’ve read you seem too be really growing as a Saints and football fan. Watch out Coldpizza she might catch up too you!
"Pigs have flown, hell has frozen over....", Jim Henderson
I know what you mean, SarahT.
I came to the Saints in a weird, roundabout way too. Also in 2006, because of Drew Brees. I’m from Podunk Nowhere, Kansas, surrounded by idiot Chiefs and Cowgirls fans. I don’t consider myself a bandwagon (which was one of my son’s vocabulary words last week) jumper, but I’ve not been through ups and (mostly) downs that others have been through. We love our boys in black and gold, so that’s what matters!!

The mere fact that you’re both regulars on a fan site devoted to the team speaks volumes as to your dedication. There are thousands of so-called female fans who don’t so much as even think about the Saints until late Saturday afternoon, when they’re stressing over whether to wear their gold or their sterling silver fleur-de-lis earrings with their pink Reggie Bush jersey on Sunday. Newsflash ladies, you could wear refrigerator magnets and a potato sack and we wouldn’t give a sh**. Just try to keep it down when the announcers are talking. That’s what being a Saints fan is truly about.
"I was not on the boat in question" -Darren Sharper
Thanks!
Girls can be both though! I like to have fun with what I am wearing (because it’s about me feeling good and it’s fun!) but if someone keeps talking during the game about unrelated stuff I won’t hesitate to ask them to please be quiet.
I actually stopped going to a local bar called the quarter that supposedly caters to Saints fans because they started sharing the main room playing the game with the restaurant next door (same owner) during brunch so people on the waiting list had a place to wait. The results were a bunch of prissy Dallas biatches with no interest in the game squawking until they got sat. VERY frustrating!!

Yeah, Dallas is loaded with uppidy snotty people
They think they’re the bomb and the world caters to them. My brother lives in Austin, that’s a cool city and good people. And there’s a ton of Saints fans that lives in Austin.
There are actually lots of Saints fans in Dallas too. There are two groups of “Who Dats” in the area, both over 100 people. And they get together every week to watch the game. :-)
(I have a good friend who lives in Austin. And, except for the easily ignored Cowgirls fans, I like Dallas MUCH better than Austin.)
Want to go to the Saints vs. Cowboys game? I've got an extra ticket.
The city itself is not as clean.
Along the main highway (I-35) there are lots of riff-raff at the intersections.
The customer service at the stores and most restaurants is not as good as I’ve experienced in Dallas.
And, most importantly, there aren’t nearly as many “options” in Austin…
Options for ANYthing… apartments, affordable & nice houses, stores, malls, movie theaters, restaurants, classical theater, clubs, meetup groups, Six Flags, pro hockey, baseball, and basketball (if you like that sort of thing)… even things that Austin prides themselves on like art and music.
And, most of them are close. In Austin, I drive 5 miles to get to the ONE and only grocery store near my friends house.
In Dallas, there are at least 10 grocery stores within that radius (no exaggeration)… My closets one is just 1mi away and 2 others are 2 miles away.
Want to go to the Saints vs. Cowboys game? I've got an extra ticket.
(I was strongly considering moving to Austin, but the great things about Dallas outweighed them right now. I’m moving this weekend actually, to another part of Dallas.)

Certain parts of Austin
Are very very clean. Years ago in the mid 1980’s I lived in Lost Creek off of HWY 360. I went to Westlake High, same school Drew Brees went too. My brother lives in Hutto about 25 mins north of Austin. Another area that’s growing. But a pretty cool area. Austin back in the day, barely had any traffic. Now? It’s loaded with traffic, it has grown a ton.
And I will agree with you about Austin, it seems like it takes forever to get to a grocery store or restaurant. Cool place to visit, but wouldn’t want to live there now. Great mexican food. Especially Matt’s El rancho.
Colorado would be my first choice to live if I decide to move.
I love Mexican… I’ll have to try that when I’m down there. Of course, we have tons of good Mexican food here too. :-)
And, I did forget to mention the traffic.
Now there are 2 main roads, north and south, so it’s a little easier to get around; but even though there is more people here, there are also more “options” on which roads to take. If one is backed up, you can take a second route…. not really so in ATX.
My friend lives in Round Rock, BTW… about a mile from the actual “round” rock.
Want to go to the Saints vs. Cowboys game? I've got an extra ticket.
nah… I’m not a golf guy. been to a driving range a couple of times and I thoroughly suck.
Want to go to the Saints vs. Cowboys game? I've got an extra ticket.
The downtown areas is very nice and clean.
Round Rock is not really Austin though, you don’t have as many options there.
I am not sure where you looked but there are far more options as far as activities go in Austin than Dallas because they are far more active in that city, partly because there is scenery to look at. Very different, more laid back, accept the unaccepted sort of vibe. I love it. It really does depend on the person though because my husband says it’s full of hippies and doesn’t like it. Shows you how different we are :)
What I enjoy the most besides the scenery is that every restaurant have a few vegetarian options if not being totally vegetarian/vegan and that is not something I find in Dallas.
There is a strong lack of jobs in Austin so moving there is difficult unless you already have something lined up.
Breesus Is My Homeboy

holy crap!
I had a huge reply written…. and it deleted everything except for one line…
And, strangely enough, it wasn’t the first or last line in my post. WTH!?
-
Basically, I TOTALLY agree that “It really does depend on the person”.
I agree 100% with your hubby… WAY to many hippies. (I wasn’t going to be the first one to say it, but yeah.)
And, there are 10 times more restaurants here, so it may take a little research, but I’d be willing to be money that we have more vegan/veggie places here than there. They are just hidden behind the Chili’s, Carrabba’s, Macaroni Grill, etc etc etc etc.
That’s one thing that I REALLY love about Dallas… so many food options.
Want to go to the Saints vs. Cowboys game? I've got an extra ticket.
I promise there isn't more, only a few stricly veg ones here in Dallas
People here literally think I am insane when I say no meat. It’s like I just told them I am from Mars. Sometimes I have to repeat myself more than a few times to the waiter who still brings out my order with meat.
Austin has far more veg places to eat and I haven’t been to one regular place there that doesn’t offer at least 2 veg options. The reason is due to the hippies – more people are health conscious an/or vegetarians so therefore that is what the restaurants cater to.
And salad doesn’t count because I am hungry, want to eat actual food and not be starving 30 mins later.

Sorry no, you have to look through all of the results...
It’s the same few Veg restaurants around Dallas – Bliss, Spiral Diner, Cosmic Cafe, Kalachandji’s, etc. The rest listed are mostly Asian restaurants, Italian restaurants, Indian restaurants and health food stores. The rest that claim to be will have one crappy option and some salads then list themselves as veg friendly.
Dallas alone has more restaurants per capita than anywhere else in the nation so a total of 8-10 vegetarian restaurants is nothing, and my friends and family are not going to stick to eating only Asian, Indian or Italian every time we go out. If you look at yahoo local for Dallas it list 9,000 places to choose from.
Trust me – I have experience with this, obviously. Unless you don’t eat meat you can’t understand the difficulty. Dallas is NOT vegetarian friendly. I eat a lot of Italian just so I can find something on the menu or I have to ask for the meat to be removed, still getting charged for it. I cannot tell you how many places I have been in Dallas that even if I remove the meat there is zero for me to eat.
Breesus Is My Homeboy
I hear ya… I totally do.
I have a friend who’s a vegetarian and the only place we can agree on is Qudoba (barritos).
There was another place we found, and I think it was Mexican too.
He’s lived here for 14+ years, and as a side note LOVES New Orleans… so, I’ll ask him where he goes out to eat.
Want to go to the Saints vs. Cowboys game? I've got an extra ticket.
Oh yeah a ton of Saints fans
Just more Cowboys fans, obviously! I think a lot of it is all the refugees from Katrina that ended up staying. The BWW we go to for the game is insane and shows you just how many fans there are. If I have anything Saints on I always get at least one who dat.
Funny story – I have been doing a boot camp with the guy that trains the Dallas Cowboy Cheerleaders. He whoops our a** BADLY. He made us do a mile run and my asthma started flaring up about half way through. I had a Saints hat on while running and the moment I started to think about stopping I hear a loud WHO DAT??!! from the parking garage attendant. It gave me that motivation I needed to keep going and I ended up coming in 4th out of about 40 people. Lol!!
Breesus Is My Homeboy
Nice!!
I get “Who Dats” all over too. If I don’t where something Saints related, the people at my grocery store (a regional chain, not mom and pop) ask me where my Saints stuff is. (Usually, it means it’s time to do laundry.)
Want to go to the Saints vs. Cowboys game? I've got an extra ticket.
I'd have too say I sort of agree with ya....
Thinking about it I’m not really sure what bothers me more. The fair weather fan, the bandwagon jumper or (and this is a personal pet peeve of mine lately) the winner haters who may have loved or at least not hated the Saints until we started winning.
"Pigs have flown, hell has frozen over....", Jim Henderson
Winning always brings bandwagon & obnoxious fans (see Exhibit A Dallas Cowboys)
SO we need to expect to have “new” fans popping up. You can expect to see a rise in the obnoxiousity (I think I may have already made that word up in another post) level as well. I always ask people what their connection to the team is. That usually tells me if they are bandwagon or not.
My conx is I was born in Alexandria, LA, so when I was old enough to chose who dat I was going to root for each Sunday, I chose the dats!
SP: "No, No, No. I said 'Let's all take it to the Vikes again' not' Let's all take 2 Vicoden!'"
Back in the late eighties and early nineties is when I really started to care.
Of course, I was a teenager at the time, so I had other “things” on my mind. When I was 21 I got married and moved to Monroe, LA for college. Talk about a culture difference from New Orleans. I remember they started showing the Dallas Cowboys preseason games and I was pissed. I was like how can a Louisiana City not show a Saints game. This is when I realized the I-20 corridor through Louisana is nothing more than an extension of Dallas. So when the regular season started, they started showing the Saints game and since I was far enough away I got to watch every game. I hated living in Monroe, but I got my degree from Louisiana Tech and wife got her degree from NLU and my ever lasting habit of watching the Saints.
So now I live in Texas and the only reason I went with Directv is for the Sunday Ticket. Over the last 10 years, there have been a couple of years I almost gave up the Sunday Ticket I couldn’t take it, but the Saints have a funny way reeling you back in year after year.
My Mom is one of the fans you talk about and it kills me. Its good and all, but come on.
The reason I wrote the post in the first place
is because the issue has hit home for me…. in my living room and kitchen (lol). I guess I’m tired of listening to a bunch of “fans” talk when they don’t have a clue about the team or the history. I do understand that teams from any sport in any community have to deal with this (which is not a bad thing, just annoying).
While watching a game:
Me: “Watch ‘em do a ’draw play’ on 3rd and 23.”
Couyon: “What’s a ‘draw play’?”
Me: “Now would be a great time for a flea-flicker.”
Couyon: “What?”
Couyon: (talking to my wife)“That reminds me…my cat got fleas….blah blah blah.”
Me: (after a missed FG)“Bring in Morten Andersen for Christ’s sake!”
Couyon: “Who?”
Me: “Wait, what’s the flag for, y’all keep it down…shh..”
Couyons: “WhoDat, WhoDat…WhoDat say dey gonna beat dem Saints!”
Me: “Quiet please…. I’m trying to see what just happened.”
Couyons: “Drew Beeees!”
Me: “Don’t y’all have homes?”
Couyons: “dis some good boudin… dey got some more?”
Me: “Take y’all foam finger and shove it where the sun don’t go!”
(NO, I DIDN’T SAY DAT)
