Predicting the Saints 53-Man Roster: Final Edition

The Saints have already begun the process of cutting down their roster to the league mandated 53 players and today we should find out the rest. Yesterday it was learned that Bobby McCray, Patrick Ramsey Nick Leckey, Kendrick Clancy and Ladell Betts (maybe Chip Vaughn?) were all released from the team while Darren Sharper and Clint Ingram were placed on the reserve PUP list, meaning they do not count toward the 53-man total and are unable to play the first six weeks.

With sixteen or so players still left to eliminate, I have decided to release my updated prediction of the Saints final 53-man roster going into week one of the regular season.

Honestly, I've got to pat myself on the back because there isn't much change from my first guess made a week-and-a-half ago. In fact, everyone who has been released during mandatory cut downs was already accounted for on my original roster prediction with the exception of Troy Evans and Ladell Betts. They have subsequently been replaced by DeShawn Wynn and Junior Galette in this edition. I also had to replace Sharper and Ingram temporarily, and have done so by including Tory Humphrey and Anthony Waters. Other than that, the rest remains exactly the same.

Go ahead and let me know what you think about my revised roster assumption.

Won't Make the Cut

QB - Patrick Ramsey, Sean Canfield - To make room for players at other positions - like wide receiver, linebacker and safety - who also play an important part on special teams, I think the Saints might only keep two quarterbacks on the active roster. After Saturday night's performance, Daniel is the trendy pick for the backup spot; who am I to disagree. Canfield probably gets called back for the practice squad.

RB - Ladell Betts - This has already been confirmed

FB - Zak KeaseyJason McKie - The Saints have always only carried one fullback on the roster. Heath Evans is still that one.

WR - Montez Billings - The odd man out.

TE - Tyler Lorenzen - Supposedly confirmed.

T - Na'Shan Goddard, Jermey Parnell - These two making the team would really surprise me.

G - Brandon CarterTim Duckworth - When Carl Nicks was demoted last week from the one's, it was Terrence Metcalf who replaced him. I had to give him the nod for the final 53 over Carter and Duckworth.

C - Nick Leckey - Confirmed.

DE - Bobby McCray - McCray's cut has already been confirmed.

DT - DeMario PressleyJay Ross - Pressley didn't make the final cut last pre-season. Hopefully the Saints have improved enough at the position for that to still hold true. As for Jay Ross, I honestly don't know really know very much about him.

LB - Stanley ArnouxHarry Coleman - Even though I picture the Saints keeping seven linebackers this season, these three guys still don't make the cut. Disappointing in Arnoux's case but maybe he's practice squad material.

CB - Leigh TorrenceDanny GorrerReggie Jones - Other than Torrence, I don't think this was a tough decision. If Patrick Robinson wasn't a first-round pick, things might be different.

S - Chip Vaughn - The only safety not to make the roster, Vaughn hasn't shown enough this pre-season.

4 TE's IMO

I think they will go with 4 TE’s in the end (Humphrey) and one less line man (Metcalf)

I think...

Larry Holder said yesterday on the radio that he was pretty sure they were keeping Tory Humphreys… but I could be wrong

I read somewhere that they were keeping Humphrey and let go of Lorenzen.

Reserve PUP list

Darren Sharper and Clint Ingram were placed on the PUP list, meaning they still count toward the 53-man total but are unable to play the first six weeks.

Reserve PUP player Do Not count against 53 man active roster.

Only reason Usama Young made the cut is because Sharper is on the PUP list..

We don’t have any other FS.. If Chip played FS, he would’ve made the cut, we have too many strong safeties

Chip...

was mainly a FS this year. He played some snaps in the SD game @ SS, but this last game he played soley @ FS while Reis played SS

Which is yet another reason I expect him to be on the PS if he clears waivers (which he almost certainly will, it’s not like we’re releasing a “sure thing” here).

Only 8 DBs?

I don’t think the Saints have ever kept fewer than 9 DBs, and often have more than that on the roster. Your prediction may be right Dave, but then what was the point of using a first round pick for depth in the secondary if they’re going to have less depth?

Other than that, the only thing I’d change would be Pressley replacing Woods – he is a more developed interior lineman than Woods right now.

just found this at the bottom of the AP report about the Cardinals releasing Leinart
NFL teams must trim their rosters to 53 players by 6 p.m. ET Saturday.

It's gonna be a great year.

KK.. still about 2 hours +..

I’m sure all the cuts have been made for the Saints, we just need the reports to be put out. Something interesting: Adam Schefter just tweeted that the Raiders are fielding trade offers for Thomas Howard, he’s an OLB.. We’re in need of one, especially after Jon Casillas’ injury. I hope Mickey has put in a few phone calls, we’ll see if anything happens

I thought we needed to improve our run defense?

you know, when you want something, and nobody can stop you from taking it, you just take it, right? I like that, but can you take it?
