Saints Place LB Jonathan Casillas on IR
Bad news, Saints fans. Larry Holder has just tweeted that starting outside linebacker Jonathan Casillas was placed on Injured Reserve, ending his 2010 season as quickly as it started.
Big news: #Saints LB Jonathan Casillas was placed on IR with a foot injury. Big blow.
I don't know about you but I am starting to get really concerned about the Saints linebacking corps this year. Hell, I'm getting concerned about the whole team and the Saints season in general at this point. Things seem to be taking a turn for the worse this week.
With all these players going on IR or PUP, the Saints won't even have to cut anyone.

Is Dunbar next down the line?
I think they’ll have to try for a trade now.

Wow...
that hurts…are we looking to see who got released today?

Plenty of LBs on waivers
Maybe try out Galette at LB.
"Why do you even ponder passing? I mean, you can take a knee and try a 56 yard field goal! This is not Detroit man, this is the Superbowl!" -- Paul Allen's call after Tracy Porter intercepted Brett Favre in NFCCG
Would he fit at LB?
Unless we are switching to a 3-4, I’m not sure he has the cover ability. Or we just blitz the weak LB every down.

Week 1 motto: Win Again
He played some LB in college
Plus he mentioned in his “making the team” interview that the Saints were going to play him some at LB.

The #Saints have moved DE Junior Galette to OLB. The rookie said he will still work as a rush end in passing situations.

We don't need to draft a LB
We’ve got everything we need in house. Yeah, right PayLoo. Way to go and waste a first round pick on a guy that is lucky to end up 4th on depth chart. Meanwhile, we’ll rely on either of two guys who’ve never been good enough to crack the starting roster on one of the worst rushing defenses in the league, and bring in a free agent that won’t see action until midseason.
This team will still be good enough to make it to the playoffs, and maybe even repeat as champions with some luck, but dammit if this wasn’t the worst offseason yet in the Payton era.
Hahahahaha don't worry.. So much negativity, Shanle is very underrated but there wasn't a solid OLB available at 32 or 64..
Ehh
Am still on the Sergio Kindle bandwagon after Hughes was taken by the Colts (Revenge pick).

Nope, he busted his noggin because of his narcolepsy.

That's what I heard

that wasn't a revenge pick
Hughes fits exactly what the Colts like at DE. It was not a surprise, especially with the Freeney’s injuries the last three years, and the fact that he and Mathis are getting a little bit older.
me too
Revenge pick, no doubt. “Hey, we needed a DE. heh heh heh”
Ain’t it hard when you discover that he really wasn’t where it’s at
After he took from you everything he could steal, how does it feel?
Worst part?
One of my few really good buddy is a die-hard Colts fan (How sweet was it to win it all in his face and in HIS living room!) and I’m the one who’s seliing him Hughes….
Repeat? Under construction...
WHOA...
How do you know? We have not even played the first game and ypu are declaring this the worst offseason yet? Yeah I think LB was the position we needed, but have some faith till week 4. If we are sucking thanks to a horrible LB corps, then start with the rants.
Week 1 matchup: Vikings
Week 1 motto: Win Again
If you agree about the need at LB
then how can you condone a 1st round pick for depth in the secondary? Given the quality of the two starters at CB, and the ability of both Jenkins and Young to play corner (with varying degrees of usefulness), they could’ve have used a 3rd or 4th round pick for depth. Shanle is serviceable at OLB – decent but not great. After that, there was no one “in the building” that was a quality starter on either side. That’s the basis for my criticism. I may yet be proven wrong, and I sure as hell hope I am, that the Saints will have a good LB corps this year, but have you seen anything during this past offseason that the org did to accomplish that??
People were saying the same thing when we drafted Robert Meachem
and who is Jahri Evans and where is Bloomsburg college? Same thing with Marques Colston, who is this guy? Why are we trading up to draft a punter who looks like he (well let’s not start with the name calling on that one). Questions come up every year. Why did we draft Deuce when we have Ricky Williams? I have come to trust the coaching staff and the scouting dept.‘s ability to find talent. Yea we’re hurting at LB right now, but I think we’ll survive.
Peyton, I can eat Oreos faster than you!!!!

You’re right. But people are still used to the fact that the sky always was falling before and there was no way to fix it. Now even if it is, we’ve got a staff who can figure out a way to patch the holes and put the sky back up, well, in the sky. But people are used to hitting the panic button when the first problem happens because they’re used to the previous years when we totally sucked.
We’ll find a way. We’ll trade for somebody who will be decent enough for us to get by with. Or we’ll find somebody on the waiver wire. Or one of the other kids will step up for a game or two at a time. Or we’ll adjust our scheme. Or something. GW and SP will find a way to make it work. At least partially work. And it will be good enough.

agreed!
Now is not the time for panic! Concern, certainly. But let’s give them a chance to fix things first.
"It's about time that something good like this happened." - Drew Brees
Not comparable
WIth the exception of Meachem, all of those were late round draft picks. And Meachem was a good choice because, at the time, Payton needed good young WRs to build his offense. Going into the 2007 offseason, the Saints WR corps was not particularly good. Colston was really the only bright spot. Horn was on his way out, Moore was a complete unknown (1 career reception), and Henderson hadn’t learned how to catch yet.
The point is that OLB has been a serious position of need now for quite a while, and they have mostly neglected it. Granted, there were other positions of need (secondary, DL) that have been much improved thanks to some good 1st and 2nd round picks and solid free agent acquisitions. But spending early round picks for depth when you still need starters at other positions is ridiculous.
And just to be clear, I’m not at all panicking. I’m criticizing the Saints 2010 offseason choices. I still think this team is SB contender. I just think they’d have been a much stronger contender had PayLoo done more to improve the LB corps. It was clearly the weakest link in the defense, and they basically ignored it in the offseason.
It's like Deja Vu
but dammit if this wasn’t the worst offseason yet in the Payton era.
I seem to hear that every year from somebody. I had a friend to complain about drafting Tracy Porter in the 2nd round

not from me you haven't
I’ve thought Payton and Loomis have been nothing short of brilliant in their drafts and free agent acquisitions prior to this year. That’s why I’m so annoyed – they went from genius to remedial class.
Thomas Howard of the Raiders is available.. Could be interesting acquisition..
Raiders need a WR? Adrian Arrington?
I'd love that
Plus, Al Davis is so insane we could probably get him in a trade for a ham sandwich. Too bad he deals with devils, not Saints.

Relax
Outside of Sharper the Saints won a title with a very average Scott Fujita. Its not like Casillas was Vilma. We will be fine, with Dunbar, Vilma, and Shanle…
Fujita very average? he would still be on our roster if he was very average.
NFL Teams don’t lure away AVERAGE players with better contracts .Fujita ANCHORED a defense that went to the NFC championship game in 06 and THEN switched positions and was a key player on a SUPER BOWL team. If only we had more of these Average players. Remember, the 06 defense wasn’t exactly star studded.

It was the $$$$, not the ability. If he had 1 more year on his contract, he’d still be starting for the Saints. But yeah, he’s pretty average.
NFL Teams don’t lure away AVERAGE players with better contractsOf COURSE they do. Oakland, Cleveland, Washington… happens all the time.
Ain’t it hard when you discover that he really wasn’t where it’s at
After he took from you everything he could steal, how does it feel?
Oh man, Stuart, you’re gonna hate that we agree again, but you’re right. Crappy teams overpay to get decent players all the time, because every player knows they are going to have medical bills later and they need those big paydays now while they can get them.
And Shanle was average. He wasn’t horrid, like certain pizza lovers around here thought. And he wasn’t great either. He was just good enough to mostly get the job done, most (like, say, 60-70%) of the time.
And Pay-Loo LOVE ex-Patriots

What is the injury?
How does he go from a sprained foot to IR. This smells funny!
Can the real Jonathan Casillas please stand up!
Nah, he won't be standing up on that foot for a while.

Lookin real thin at DT, Sedrick Ellis better plan on staying healthier than he's ever been this year.

I thought he was in over Woods, too. My guess is they are not seeing commitment/hunger/drive from him. He’s got the build and some skills, but doesn’t show up every down.

From rotoworld
According to Brad Biggs of the National Football Post, Saints LB Stanley Arnoux is an “ideal fit at weak side.”
With WLB Jonathan Casillas placed on injured reserve Saturday, the defending champions need Arnoux to play a predominant role on the defense. If the team chooses to keep Scott Shanle on the strong side, Arnoux and Jo-Lunn Dunbar will compete for playing time on the weak side.
"Why do you even ponder passing? I mean, you can take a knee and try a 56 yard field goal! This is not Detroit man, this is the Superbowl!" -- Paul Allen's call after Tracy Porter intercepted Brett Favre in NFCCG
LB will be ok
I say this for primarily one reason; most teams now run 3 WR sets a majority of the time meaning that the LB is pulled for an extra CB. If I had to choose a position to feel iffy about it would be LB for this reason. I’m hoping Arnoux or Dunbar will step up and hopefully the competition between the two will motivate them. But in the end, they will probably be on the sideline a lot more than the nickel CB even if they are a “starter.”
Well at least now I have an answer!
Lis franc fracture. No idea how hard it is to come back from, but it looks like Casillas will be back to square one next year. Sad he was so close to the big show!
What in the HELL just happened!?
It is his chance to "Come Back Stronger"
"Why do you even ponder passing? I mean, you can take a knee and try a 56 yard field goal! This is not Detroit man, this is the Superbowl!" -- Paul Allen's call after Tracy Porter intercepted Brett Favre in NFCCG
those are nasty and take a long time to heal
you know, when you want something, and nobody can stop you from taking it, you just take it, right? I like that, but can you take it?
when analyzing modern day OLBs,
there is a tendency to rate almost every OLB as average. It is a position that there is very little glory in because of its requirements- being big enough and tough enough to stuff the run, fast enough to cover Reggie Bush- Brian Westbrook types, and physical enough and fast enough to cover Shockey/Cooley types. Almost noboby can do all that really, really well, so what you get is a hybrid player who can do all of that fairly well but none of it exceptionally well. As a result, the vast majority of OLBs are great atheletes that are labeled as “average football players” but it has more to do with the requirements of the position than how good the OLB is. Think about it, every Offensive Coordinator is going for that matchup- that matchup of Bush vs. OLB or Gonzalez vs OLB or Westbrook vs OLB. Mostly it’s RB vs OLB. But, what OLB in this league can cover Bush , PT, Turner, F Jackson, Faulk, Moreno to name a few. So they inherently look mediocre because it’s a task that the best you can do is control damage, you won’t shut it down.
"I think we agree, the past is over" - George W Bush
"The greatest enemy of knowlege is not ignorance; it is the illusion of knowledge" Stephen Hawking
Here's a short list of OLBs considered very good or better
This is definitely not exhaustive, just some off the top of my head.
Brian Cushing
Aaron Curry
Rey Maualuga
DeMarcus Ware
Terrell Suggs
Keith Bulluck
Lamar Woodley
James Harrison
Jon Beason
Comparing a 3-4 OLB and a 4-3 OLB is like comparing a WR to a TE… although they may have a common function, catching the ball, they have VERY different roles on the team.
D Ware, T Suggs, and J Harrison are basically DE’s that call themselves OLB’s. Unless we’re talking about 3-4 OLB’s, they should be in the discussion.
Want to go to the Saints vs. Cowboys game? I've got an extra ticket.
actually, didn’t T Suggs have a disagreement over what they called him…
He wanted to be called a DE because they make more money and he spends most of his snaps with his hand on the ground rushing the passer.
