Could Stanley Arnoux replace Jonathan Casillas?

Rotoworld:

According to Brad Biggs of the National Football Post, Saints LB Stanley Arnoux is an "ideal fit at weak side."

With WLB Jonathan Casillas placed on injured reserve Saturday, the defending champions need Arnoux to play a predominant role on the defense. If the team chooses to keep Scott Shanle on the strong side, Arnoux and Jo-Lunn Dunbar will compete for playing time on the weak side.

Here's the link to that article: http://www.nationalfootballpost.com/Saints-facing-some-issues-at-linebacker.html
Pat Yakinsas also mentions it to be a possibility: http://espn.go.com/blog/nflnation/tag/_/name/nfl-roster-analysis-2010
I thought Arnoux was hurt during the preseason? Did he even play? I'd much rather have Arnoux at WLB and Shanle at SLB..

Dunbar got some first-team work on the weak side in the early part of camp, but is viewed more as a backup middle linebacker and special-teams player. Arnoux, who missed his rookie season with an injury, has the tools to play the weak side, but lacks experience. This looks like a situation in which the Saints will have to look for help from the outside. What’s available on the waiver wire might not be enough. They might have to pursue a trade for a linebacker with realistic ability to start right away.

I keep suggesting a trade with the Raiders for Thomas Howard, he's still young and could help us at OLB. Adam Schefter tweeted that he was available yesterday, I wonder what the asking price could be? Adrian Arrington + a pick? Raiders need help at WR, don't they?

Schefter's Twitter:

Raiders listened to trade offers for LB Thomas Howard and CB Chris Johnson but, at least for time being, opted against trading them

I think the worst move for this team is to move Scott Shanle back to WLB and make Jo-Lonn Dunbar our starting SLB. Dunbar is not a starter in this league, he's a great special teams guy but nothing more then that.. For those of you that are upset with the fact that we took Patrick Robinson at 32 and not Sergio Kindle, well have Kindle even played a snap yet? He's been injured, very injury prone.

Pay-Loo always find a way to fix it, they acquired Jeremy Shockey pretty close to the beginning of pre-season, if I recall, I wouldn't be surprised to see them acquire a OLB.

Screw Sergio Kindle, I’m upset that we didn’t pick Daryl Washington. And yeah, you’re right…I’m sure PayLoo know what’s going on, and they’re working to fix it. I just wish they had worked to fix it in April.

It was worth the wait.

Weren’t there reports that PayLoo thought it was unnecessary to draft a linebacker in the early rounds. And isn’t the only truly good linebacker on the team, Vilma, a 12th overall draft pick. sigh

Agree on Washington. Guy’s looked nothing but solid and incredibly fast in preseason action.

I've been yakkin' about Arnoux...

…since they drafted him.

So, do I think he’s the “guy” at Will? ;-)

…yeah, I think he’s the guy.

WWLTV Twitter:
Shanle, Vilma both hinted that Jo-Lonn Dunbar would be the guy who will step up with Jonathan Casillas on IR.

Lol man.. Dunbar is NOT a starter in the NFL.. This is damn embarrassing, do something about it Loomis

by AKAY47 on Sep 5, 2010 12:56 PM CDT reply actions

Technically, he is a starter. He just doesn’t have starting talent, or at least hasn’t shown it. Maybe with the support of the coaches, and with GW’s scheming to hide his flaws, Dunbar could easily end up being very useful in our system.

Bobby Carpenter was released by the Rams..

Could be an option at OLB.. Was he there when Sean Payton was still in Dallas?

by AKAY47 on Sep 5, 2010 1:12 PM CDT reply actions

maybe but does it really matter?

rotoworld.com:

Carpenter has lacked physicality in St. Louis, just as he did in Dallas, and will be no better than the fourth linebacker.

Ain’t it hard when you discover that he really wasn’t where it’s at
After he took from you everything he could steal, how does it feel?

Carpenter was a whiff

Big name, big draft slot, but a swing and a miss.

It was worth the wait.

Yeah

And Greg Williams is 10 feet tall and shoots lightning bolts out of his arse.

I don't like Thomas Howard

We need help stopping the run, if we got Howard we wouldn’t be getting help but would be hurting ourselves.IMO. Just look at how awful he was at stopping the run for the Raiders.

you know, when you want something, and nobody can stop you from taking it, you just take it, right? I like that, but can you take it?

by shn_hldn on Sep 5, 2010 2:56 PM CDT reply actions

The acquision of Alex Brown and Jimmy Wilkerson was to improve in the run defense.

Payton sacrificed a LB and DT, Position so that Greg Williams could better implement his schemes on defense having another CB at his disposal.

My problem is this: What happens to that defense when/If GW leaves.
Do you really think Payton is going to forfit another 1st round draft next year in support of the defense.
That leaves a total of two years until the Saints are bolstered with a 1st round pick that is defensive.

Do you really think Payton is going to forfeit another 1st round draft next year in support of the defense.

If we have the #1 offense again and don’t have 10 people trying to leave (and aside from PT, who’s contract is up?) I wouldn’t be surprised at all if we draft defense #1 again next year. Or even go defense-heavy.

Nicks, Goodwin, possibly Bushrod.

Don’t know about any receivers.

Yeah, Moore is up, sorry. Forgot about that. But even then, we’ve got potential replacements in-house if we can’t agree on terms. Henderson is one year into a 4-year, he’s not up. Meachem still has two more to go on his 5-year rookie deal. Colston’s extension was only three years but it was an extension, not a replacement, so he’s signed through 2011 as well.

Granted, with Brees AND both Meachem and Colston due after 2011 we’ll probably start at least trying to do extensions next offseason. But none of them are due such that we have to spend draft picks next year to replace them.

Bushrod and Goodwin, same thing. Oh I’m sure we’ll try to keep them (especially Goodwin) if we can, but we’ve got potential replacements already in training just in case.

Nicks might be a bit more difficult but I bet we’ll try hardest to keep him. Especially since we don’t have a clear successor in the wings. But you rarely draft all that many guards in the first round anyway, unless there’s somebody just so awesome we have to have him, I don’t expect this to affect our strategy even if we can’t resign him.

Thomas is up, he’s on a one-year RFA contract. I suspect we’ll try to keep him, but even if we don’t I can’t see us changing our whole draft strategy over losing him. I don’t really expect Humphrey to last the season, but if he does, he’ll either be under contract or an ERFA, either way, he’s not a concern. Strief is up as well, he’s also on a one-year RFA, but again he’s not somebody to jumble the entire draft strategy over. And he’s also not a superstar such that we can’t bring him back at an affordable rate.

Bush isn’t up, his rookie deal goes through 2011 as well. Shockey isn’t up until 2011 either, but I wouldn’t be shocked if we don’t keep him after that, especially if we do keep Thomas. Bush is far harder to call, will depend on how he does this year. And what kind of money he wants.

So what does that leave us with? Three starters and three other important role-players whose contracts are up, at least three of which should be fairly easy to retain if we want to, plus one which we will try very hard to keep (in fact, I wouldn’t be at all surprised for Nicks to get extended during the season).

Worst to worst we need a new Guard and we need a few late-rounders to develop to potentially replace people coming due in 2011. None of which means we can’t draft defense in the first round, or at least the second. And probably at least two or three defensive players in total.

by FriarBob on Sep 6, 2010 9:33 AM CDT up reply actions

Sorry, four starters. PT, Bushrod, Goodwin, and Nicks. But at least two of them should be a piece of cake to keep, the third should be doable, and the only one I’m at all worried about is PT.

by FriarBob on Sep 6, 2010 9:38 AM CDT up reply actions

Only two guys I would HATE to see leave, as in we'd lose a step if they left, are PT & Nicks..

I think Thomas reaches an extension with us during the season at some point, and Nicks will re-sign next off-season..

Jermon Bushrod? He can go, Charles Brown is ready to blossom and become a Pro Bowl LT..

Jonathan Goodwin? I’ve got confidence in Matt Tennant, to be honest. Maybe re-sign Goodwin for 1 year and then in two years have Tennant replace him

Why is everyone so ready to get rid of AA? Or even Lance Moore?

I think Meachem is our new Henderson and Henderson did do really good last year. I think he has more trade value than Moore or AA. Also, Moore was hurt last season. The season before our SB run Moore did what Henderson did the year of our SB run, which is getting open and catching the short/medium(chain moving) balls. AA also seems alot like Colston. Catching almost everything thrown at him so far. I like AA and Moore over Henderson. How do we know he won’t go back to dropping everything again anyways like he had done every season before our SB run?

Superbowl bound!!!...I know! do you?! Go Saints!!

by skinnykinney on Sep 5, 2010 4:06 PM CDT reply actions

How do we know he wont be even better this year?

I dont want to trade anybody but if we can get a starting quality will or sam LB than hell, he wont come cheap we have to give up something!

What in the HELL just happened!?
