No Saints content. Suzjo sent this to me. I hate all things Fox but this guy makes some good points: Vick is now humbled and mature. Peyton's huge ego won't allow him to admit the truth, that he needs an offensive coordinator. Jim Caldwell is overmatched, a Peter Principle prime example.

No matter how well you do, some people always want to bring you down

You’d think that Peyton had a bad game from the junk Whitlock is writing in that article. He had a QB Rating of over 100, completion % over 69 and didn’t turn the ball over against the #6 pass defense in the league. To say Manning blew the game is like saying Drew Brees is the reason the Saints D gave up 41 Saturday. Its simply illogical.

And then to say that Manning has a huge ego and lacks maturity because he won’t demand that the Colts fire the coach that took them to a Super Bowl in his 1st season? That’s one of the most idiotic things I’ve read in quite a while. Thank you Stu, for alerting me to just how bad sports writing has become.

"I want to hand this trophy to the MVP of the Super Bowl -- and the MVP of the entire league.''
-- Saints coach Sean Payton, handing the Vince Lombardi Trophy to Drew Brees after Super Bowl 44.

No, he makes a good point

Whitlock’s contention isn’t that Manning is a bad quarterback at all…just that he’s a bad tactician.

Smart defensive coaches love to take on Manning at playoff time. A good football coach can always outthink a player, no matter how intelligent or talented the player is.

This whole article was keyed by two things: Vick’s admission—not too hard an admission, really, since it was eminently true—that he blew the game for the Eagles; and Manning’s failure to admit the same thing about his loss:

Saturday, Manning failed on numerous third-and-short situations, choosing to throw rather than run. Late in the game, he underthrew Blair White on a critical third-down pass that would’ve left virtually no time on the clock when Adam Vinatieri attempted a go-ahead field goal, rather than enough time for the Jets to execute their game-winning drive.

…plus his history of blaming everyone else when things don’t go his way. And Whitlock didn’t write that Manning has an ego problem because he won’t demand Caldwell’s firing; he wrote that if he didn’t have an ego problem, he would demand it (admittedly, though: that’s a stretch). Peyton’s ego problem has been manifest for years…as anyone can see when he pouts on the bench like an 11-year-old who’s just realized he won’t be getting that trophy he thought was his by right.

[Full disclosure: I have never liked Peyton Manning (as if you couldn’t tell), and like him less and less as the years go by. I’ve never liked Michael Vick, either, and expected that sooner or later he would blow it.]

It was worth the wait.

by MtnExile on Jan 10, 2011 1:44 PM CST up reply actions

The only problem with that statement

Is that Manning didn’t blow it. He put his team ahead with 53 seconds left in the game. If your defense can’t stop a team from going down the field in 53 seconds, then that isn’t the QBs fault. Its not like the Jets have a powerful passing attack that can move the ball at will. And to say he failed on numerous 3rd and short situations, come on. What do you really honestly expect can be done by a human being? 69.2 completion percentage with 0 INTs isn’t good enough? Like I said, if that’s the standard, then let’s just say that Drew Brees’s 21 incompletions are the reason we lost saturday. I’m sure if he had completed 100% of his passes we would have won, so lets call him and bum and say he’s immature for not admitting this loss is his fault.

Low scoring.

That’s one point the writer made as opposed to how Peyton performs in the regular season. That’s where he thinks Peyton could use an offensive coordinator.

Caldwell is incompetent. He knows only one thing, without variance: If we just get the ball back to Peyton, we’ll win! He doesn’t consider much else, like leaving the opponent time to steal the game.

Brees isn’t a combo QB/OC/Greatest to ever breathe near a football, etc.

I wouldn't say the dude (Caldwell) is incompetent at all...

They just didn’t execute on defense…happens.

Even if all the author says is true (which I don't believe it is)

Isn’t that a front office problem? If Peyton is so great out there that the coaches expect him to do this kind of stuff, how is that a negative reflection on Peyton?

But back to the main point of the article. Peyton won a Super Bowl in 2006 against the toughest defense in the league that year. In fact, he was the MVP of that game. So don’t tell me the Bears enjoyed facing him.

And as for Jim Caldwell. The guy is in his second season as a HC. He’s 26-9 and 2-2 in the postseason. Let’s wait until he at least has a losing record in the postseason, or has a year where he doesn’t make the playoffs before we start calling him incompetent, OK?

I agree wholeheartedly, but then again...

Caldwell is from my hometown, I actually remember hearing about him before he left. Still Vick has improved and I respect him even more for it.

Minor quibble

Not so minor, actually. Peyton played like a doofus in the 2006 playoffs. He was bailed out repeatedly by his defense and Adam Vinatieri. He won the MVP for a 1-TD, 1-interception game because his name was Peyton Manning.

It was worth the wait.

True but you don't get that type of pass...

unless you earn it. Kinda like the Michael Jordan pass. Michael earned that pass. People may not like it all the time but you don’t get it unless you put up the numbers to get there.

Vick’s admission—not too hard an admission, really, since it was eminently true—that he blew the game for the Eagles

I had the game on but wasn’t paying attention to it entirely but I didn’t think Vick blew the game. Remind me again what the score would have been if David Akers made those two field goal attempts…

Even if he’d only made one of those FGs, they could have attempted another instead of an “all go” desperation pass.

That's how i looked at it...

Akers screwed them. Sure, Vick could’ve did better on that last throw but Akers missed two FG’s. Vick is put them in contention to win it in the first place. He’ll improve next year.

i don't expect him to improve. I think Vick is only an excellent QB when he runs often.

Once hge gets paid 5-10 mil and settles in as the teams QB, they will want him to be a pocket QB and not scramble around and expose himself to injury – the way they tried (and were successful) to change Mc Nabb. He’s too valuable to allow him to be that vulnerable. But, the more you try to protect Vick by not having him run and having him stay in the pocket the less effective he becomes. So, he will either be less effective or he’ll get pounded like he did this year. He won’t last. And, if you compromise then he won’t be good at anything. That’s why so few scrambling (Non-pocket) QBs go to the SB.

You don't think he could improve?

He could improve that area of his game. He improved it thus far…He looked to pass way more than he used to. How many 300 yard games did he have this year, I bet more than he had in his whole career before the dog crap…

Agreed for the most part. Plus that last pick….he did exactly what you wanted. Took a shot against single coverage with a 6’3 WR who had a big time height advantage. He just didn’t put enough air on it to guarantee a catch, or incomplete pass. It happens.

Akers played a big role in losing the game, but Vick had a chance at the end to pull it out, missed field goals or not. He made a bonehead play, and it cost his team a chance to win.

kind of hard for me to buy into that Vick is a bigger man than Manning using any standard

I find that quite an insult tp Peyton Manning and anything the Manning’s are about. I don’t think Manning should throw Caldwell under he bus or anyone else. And, he’s accomplished a lot with basically a very weak running game.

Jason Whitless is yet another hack scribbler. I can’t even call him a writer because all the stuff I have unfortunately read from him has been dribble. Please anyone show me an article that he has written that either 1. Doesn’t flaunt the prowess of a dark skinned player ( I refuse to call them Afican-Americans cause they were not born in Africa) or 2. Show how professional sports fails to give that minority a break. His rants about how the black minority has been down-trodden make me sick. He has the audacity to compare Vick to Manning?? How does he know that Manning didn’t take some of the blame for the loss on himself?? I don’t see any quotes in which Manning blames someone else for what happened in that game. So when he can back up his writting with some facts, maybe, just maybe I might read it without having to spit the bad taste out of my mouth.

American works fine for me….or Bob if that happens to be the specific person’s name I’m talking to or about at the point. I like Bob….it’s one of those curious names. Where’s the second “B” in Robert? Kind of like when a person named William goes by Bill…or a Jack vs John argument.

I would use American. I don’t go around calling my self Asian-American even though I was born in Korea, I call myself American. But then I also think calling them black or colored wrong. Personally, I would hate to be called yellow, which is why I have issues with the Born in the USA song, the line where he says he went off to kill the yellow man, kinda cuts, but that is just me. One of my anthropology professors is from Ghana, him, I would call African-American, his kids, maybe not, but deffinately not the people who have lived here longer than the Irish.

by Saintsfan75 on Jan 12, 2011 12:59 AM CST up reply actions

I disagree...

Whitless is a sellout in my book. He’s written a lot of crap against blacks, I hate his crap! And Manning isn’t god, he can be compared to. He’s a QB just like Vick. They are both popular and they both lost games that weekend, makes sense he’d compare them. The comparison itself? Stupid.

The whole African-American thang, that’s debatable but sounds like a strong opinion, has some merit though, seeing that the distinction between American and African-American, Mexican, Asian or whatever is just separating race but would we be America if we didn’t overly focus on that. If I say American by instinct people think of those of european descent…if it come out later that who I’m talking about is Black or anything else people are like oh…

But I digress. Most blacks hate Whitlock’s crap. Guess we both hate him but we’re looking at him from different sides of the coin.
