TLSK1066's 2011 Saints Mock Draft

This is my first mock so be easy on me. I think these picks are all reasonable and if we got these players, I'd be pleased as punch. I took into account some FA moves that I thought could happen i.e. added Dline men and such.

After the jump is my mock, have at it.

TLSK1066’s 2011 Saints NFL Mock Draft:

Rd. 1 – Pick #24:

Ryan Kerrigan – DE – Purdue University.

Kerrigan is the essential high motor 4-3 Defensive End. He’s lanky like a spider monkey and can get to the quarter back. I don’t personally think he fits as a 3-4 OLB so I can see him sliding down to our pick. I think he fits perfectly in with GW’s defensive mentality and could give us the need front 4 pressure that will give the Saints more flexibility. Also, with the Fresh Prince moving over to the right side and using his power rush vs a RT and Kerrigan using his speed and high motor vs the LT, I think Sedrick Ellis will benefit greatly and we will see him make the next step forward (not that he had a bad yr by any stretch of the imagination last yr).

Rd. 2 – Pick #56:

Mason Foster – OLB – Washington University.

I know, I know, I know, Mason Foster in round 2?!?! Well, the games I’ve seen, this kid completely justifies a second round pick at the very least. I can see both Bruce Carter and Greg Jones going before we get our second pick, and even if they were still on the board, Bruce Carter will still be recovering from an ACL injury and Greg Jones is a MLB who may go to the weakside. I think SAM is a way more important need for us to fill. We saw flashes of what John Cassillas can do in the preseason, so with him on the outside and J Vilma manning the middle, I think Mason Foster can come in and make an immediate impact on the defense.

Rd. 3 – Pick #72:

Jerrell Powe – DT(NT) – Ole Miss

Remi Ayedole is a Free Agent and I suspect we will bring him back. I even see us going after a vet to help on the DT spot like Brandon Mebane. (Can’t I dream?) But I think having an athletic NT that can absorb two blocks and even penetrate if singled up with a guard or center would be a great birthday/Christmas/every other gift-giving occasion gift for Sedrick Ellis. I could see Ellis getting at least four more sacks with some interior help.

Rd. 3 – Pick #88:

D.J. Williams – TE – Arkansas

I think the writing is on the wall with "J Shock". He will make entirely too much money and he has become too fragile to be relied on. I think David Thomas will be back and he is a great all around TE and solid number 2. Jimmy Graham is ready to take the next step and already has a keen working relationship with Drew Brees. However, depth is needed and Williams as a huge upside. I’ve seen most mocks having him going in the fourth, so I’m confident that he will be available at our spot. I think in a few years, a Graham/Williams combination would be deadly down the seams.

Rd. 7 – Pick #Undefined – Not sure about the Comp. Picks (I know we should be getting one via the Scott Fujita departure because of the nice size contract he signed)

Derrick Locke – RB – Kentucky

I hear you all yelling at me for waiting until the 7th round to pick up a running back, but hear me out. I don’t see Sean Payton spending a high pick on a RB with so many other holes and his lack of enthusiasm in using the running game in general. I also can’t see him relying on a rookie unless he has to like this past year. (And let’s face it, if the rumors were true with us trying to give Buffalo a 3rd for M. Lynch, SP still wasn’t satisfied with the RB spot well into the season) What I see happening is PayLoo (the affectionate term for the awesome combo of Payton and Loomis – much like the Wonder Twins) going after a vet like Michael Bush or even DeAnglo Williams to fill the spot, retain the services of the PT Cruiser and renegotiate the horrific contract that Reggie Bush has not lived up too.

What we really address in this pick is a KICK RETURNER!!! Roby was great two years ago, but outside of his gunner role, has not flashed this year. Derrick Locke runs a 4.36 and… well, that’s it! But, hey, it’s a 7th Rounder! (Shut up Colston and Arrington fans!)
