Lockout: There's another option (Don't get excited, it's nearly as unpalatable)
Mike Florio in lawyer mode. No wait, it's pretty good, other than him being somewhat annoying. Interview is with NFL's mouthpiece. If there is no agreement, the second option available after a lockout is that the owners can declare an impasse and impose the conditions of their last offer on the players, who could then go on strike if they want. Which puts the blame for no football on the players.
Interesting to me is the 3rd comment "I wasn’t the first time, but I am hands down, 100% on the player’s side this time." Currently rated by readers at 11 thumbs up, 37 thumbs down. What's the matter with kansas???

Not quite all of the story here
I just posted about this on another thread here. It is possible that the players don’t strike, decertify the union in this case, and the current rules will continue until the courts decide what they will look like. This is about the most unlikely scenario of all, because neither side wants the decision taken out of their hands.

actually, I just finished reading all the way through it
He covers that, but his statement is that they would just go under the current rules, which is not quite the same as what I said here.

im not blindly on the players side
the most telling thing is that the players dont want to change a thing (basically go back to the 2009 salary cap system). that means there has to be an imbalance of power and/or money favoring the players. i do think its extremely misleading that the nfl keeps stating that the fans are “demanding” an 18 game schedule when it couldnt be further from the truth (we just hate preseason). in my opinion, the players and owners should just sit down and lock themselves in the room until they hammer out a deal somewhere in the middle, without the 18 game season (owners will throw the players a bone).

Just to make sure no one thinks I'm a commo pinko fag (not that there's anything wrong with that)
If the players’ position was “We want a larger percentage of the revenue pool than we have now. We’re not getting enough”, I’d be on the owners’ side 100%. I think the current split of the loot is pretty fair.
It is the opposite that is happening now. The owners want a larger cut. That’s why I’m 100% against the owners.

I’d be less inclined to be on the players side if the owner’s could obviously prove their point. They claim they’re not making enough money and margins are shrinking etc etc. If that’s the case…why don’t they simply prove it by showing the books? By them claiming these things and then refusing to hand over the proof obviously smells like a load of BS.

Well, if we’re going to split hairs like this, then I do have to point out that they HAVE provided proof. What they haven’t provided are DETAILS. Minor, but potentially critical difference. What they have provided is certified accounting summaries (or something along those lines) that prove that the league as a whole is making less money. What they aren’t willing to do — likely because of disagreements/distrust among themselves — is to provide line-by-line details showing WHICH teams are losing money and exactly how much. The NFLPA is trying to exploit that potential ownership fissure by subtly misrepresenting the truth in their propaganda. It’s actually a fairly clever, if dishonest, tactic.
On some level, I actually partly agree with the players that it does seem a bit suspicious that they won’t turn over their full books, but the owners are right that they don’t have any requirement to do so. Because you know people like Jones probably ARE making a good profit still. And I have very little sympathy for morons like Mikey the Moron who is likely losing money or close to it, but also is a good part of the problem because of the way he runs the Bungles into the ground because he’s too )@(* stupid to hire a GM and proper coaching staff. But then there are other small-market owners like Wayne Weaver and Ralph Wilson and even our own Rita Benson-LeBlanc (and her granddad, but I know none of you give a crap about him) who are _*also* in danger of and/or actually losing money despite NOT being morons or greedy thugs.
But at the same time, pretty much no company ever discloses its full books to the general public, nor even to their stockholders if they’re publicly traded, or even just to the other side in union negotiations. That’s why you have CPAs and auditors and summary reports and systems to certify those records in the first place.
i dont think that jerry makes as much money as you would think
the problem with billion dollar stadiums is that they cost… a billion dollars. im not sure how many other teams are state subsidized like ours is, but the saints deal is not the norm in the league. teams like jax have to be losing money… and this lockout is as much for jax as it is for jerry and the rest of the teams that recently built enormous stadiums that stiil have to be paid off in a crappy economy. while the overall value of the teams may have skyrocketed over the past twenty years (even over the past 5), the owners have no way to tap into that growth short of selling part or all of the team. so while their investment in the team has increased, they could be losing money on the day to day operations (for an example, go check out the new orleans hornets books that were posted on deadspin).

I think Jerry makes more than YOU think
That stadium is an investment to bring him even more riches, not a public service project.

jerry didnt just hand over a check for a billion bucks to the general contractor
he had to get loans and issue bonds. this wasnt financed by dallas and/or texas like the dome was. and of course he did it to make more money (in the long run), but that doesnt mean that he is making a profit every year (i have no idea, maybe so maybe not). hes got a serious note to pay off, im sure he’ll be fine. there are plenty of a******* willing to overpay to watch a losing team.
