To go alongside the recent Brees in decline post. I have graphed the stats of Brees for the years from 2002-2010 and 2006-2010.
Now, this first picture is of Brees career stats minus 2001, which was his rookie year, in which he only played one game. Also keep in mind, that he only played 11 games during 2003, which is why his stats for that year are down. Most of these stats are self explanatory. However, I wanted a different viewpoint, so I also included Brees' DVOA from Football Outsiders (I know some people here hate it, that's fine. Just disregard the stat when I include it.) as well as the rank of Brees from that year.
Charted here are the completions and attempts for Brees from 2002-2010, and then the average in the final column. The completion % over those same years and then the average in the final column again. On the bottom are the TD, INT, and sacks by Brees over that very same time period. Then the final column is the career average.
Same explanations as above. Yardage from 2002-2010 and then the average. Then the QB rating.
Here is the FO DVOA. From 2002-2010, then the average of those numbers.
Now to shake things up a bit. Here are Brees' stats while a Saint. This takes out the 2003 performance, and 2002 performance before he really became a good QB. No real explanation of these numbers needed.
Here are the completions and attempts and then the Completion % while a Saint.
Here are the Yardage and the QB rating while a Saint.
The final graphs, with the TD, INT, and sacks on top. And the FO DVOA on bottom.
Now, from my personal perspective. Notice how 2010 is close to, or above the average mark for both career and while a Saint in almost every category? Also notice, the last decline like this was in 2007. In fact, it's kinda eerie how a lot of Brees 2010 numbers match up with 2007's numbers.
From that, I'm going to believe that 2010 was just statistical noise. Brees had a very similar year to 2007, and I can easily see him being back to form next year.
