Saints Sign RB Joique Bell

The Saints running back situation seems to get more dire as the team approaches its first playoff game against the Seahawks this Saturday. Adam Caplan from Fox Sports is reporting via Twitter that the Saints have added another running back to the mix...

Eagles re-sign RB Martell Mallett to PS. Saints sign RB Joique Bell off Eagles ps.

Uh-oh! This might be a bad sign for Pierre Thomas lovers like myself. Perhaps fans shouldn't expect to Thomas to be playing this weekend.

Bell is a bowling ball. Pure power back, a la Bam Morris. I was big on him around draft time. Nice signing.

He’s such a bowling ball, he’s rolled between 4 teams in a season. Bills, Colts, Eagles, Saints. COLTS!!! After having to get Edgerrin James’ little brother to come and run some plays, they still let Joyk Bell go on down the road. I imagine he is not exactly a keeper.

Curses!

It could also mean they want to add more depth to the RBs corps just in case.

Maybe they can devise a gameplan in which they won’t really need PT to win. I know we’re playing in Seattle and their 12th man is pretty strong, but we should easily win this game. If we don’t….., well, I’d rather not even think about it. The stage is set for Reggie to shine in this game. He needs to play like he did in our first playoff game last year. BRING THE WOOD!

Yes!

I’ve wanted the Saints to sign Bell since the Senior Bowl. He hasn’t done anything in the pros yet because nobody has tried to use him. He had 2,084 rushing yards as a senior at Wayne State. This is what they said about him coming out of college:

The Lions’ coaches are leading the North, and offensive coordinator Scott Linehan noticed Joique Bell the first day. “He’s got a no-nonsense kind of approach to the game,” Linehan said. “He said, ‘I understand this play. I’m going to go get 4 yards.’ And I like that. He’s consistent. This is not a big stage to him. He fits right in.” What about Bell’s burst? He worked with a trainer in the Bay Area for two weeks before the Senior Bowl and will return for three weeks before the NFL scouting combine in Indianapolis next month. He said he can run the 40-yard dash in the 4.4-second range consistently and as low as 4.39. He hopes to lower that to 4.32. “I’ve got tunnel vision,” Bell said. “It won’t be a problem for me to stay focused.” – Detroit Free Press

It was worth the wait.

A comparison

Player A rushed for 6,728 yards in his college career, including 2,084 yards and 29 touchdowns in his final season, when he won the Harlon Hill Trophy as Most Valuable Player in Division II. Yet he went undrafted. He was signed as a free agent, but only made the practice squad. He was signed by a second team but then waived; picked up by a third team, and finally made the active roster…but then was waived again.

Player B rushed for 7,441 yards in his college career, including 2,756 yards and 34 touchdowns in his best season, when he won the Harlon Hill Trophy as Most Valuable Player in Division II. Yet he went undrafted. He was signed as a free agent, but was injured and waived. The next year he made the active roster, but played sparingly. He was waived in his third season.

Player A is Joique Bell.

Player B is Danny Woodhead, who is currently rushing for a 5.6 average for the soon-to-be Super Bowl-bound Patriots.

Sometimes a guy just needs a chance…but sometimes he needs 3 or 4.

It was worth the wait.

Who would have their hopes up for a guy signed off the street on Wednesday to play on Saturday? Just because some think there may be a little bit of bright side to this unmitigated disaster at RB, doesn’t necessarily mean you have to piss on the parade before it got out of the warehouse. It’s really more of a second line, to begin with. He’ll be lucky if he gets 10 touches as a 2010-11 Saint, anyway. On the bright side, maybe rotoworld will have some ammo against this guy other than his waiver claims after Saturday, right?

Saints coach Sean Payton said Pierre Thomas had a setback last week at practice and that everyone “felt this was the best move.”

In Reggie we trust

Time to see what Reggie can do with 15+ carries. He may not be conventional, but I trust him more than Jones/Wynn/(Joique)Bell to carry the load in a playoff game. Reggie gets banged up a lot, but its win-now or have a long time to get healthy. Plus he knows the playbook better than Wynn/Bell and plays better than Jones.

if there's a silver lining in all this

With all these new RBs our opponents will have no clue what to expect.
(That’s pitifully optimistic, isn’t it? So were the 87 of you who voted “yes” that PT would play this weekend, so hush it.)

And Drew is going to be running for his life with the number of blitzes thrown at him.

Any one of these backs are good enough to be underutilized. We have a great passing offense led by Drew Brees. That's all that matters.

The best part will be Brees telling a newbie what to do on a blitz pickup, followed by Brees getting pounded into the dirt with the newbie having a “Huh?” look on his face.

Brees is athletic enough to avoid all sacks.

He’ll just pull this move:

Explains what happened to Namath’s knees. Can’t keeping jumping around that high and coming down on dirt fields without doing some damage.

Looks like Joe got a boost. He couldn’t jump that high.

Namath’s knees were shot before he ever got to the pros.
