Saints Place Pierre Thomas on IR
Our worst fears have been confirmed: Pierre Thomas is done for the season. This is something we became suspicious of when he was held out from the Tampa Bay home game this past weekend with a "setback" and it became alarming when news broke that running back Joique Bell had been signed today. The news is a huge blow to the Saints considering the fact that Chris Ivory was shelved for the year only 24 hours prior. The Saints will now head into Seattle Saturday with backfield depth consisting of: Reggie Bush, Julius Jones, DeShawn Wynn and Joique Bell.
Did this news catch you by surprise? Is it safe to say our running game is officially in shambles now?

Reggie’s best games this year were St. Louis and Tampa Bay, when he got his biggest number of carries: 9 each time. He averaged 6 yards a carry in those two games. IF he gets the blocking he needs, he’s perfectly capable of going off.
It was worth the wait.
If we play three more games.......................without Pierrre and Ivory
Reggie Bush has a Golden opportunity to define his carreer in the Pros in the next two or three games. I dont think he has ever been asked to carry the team on his shoulders but the time has come. He has had five years to educate himself to the NFL and it’s now time to prove his worth.
Reggie has always been considered a complimentary back and no one sees him as the feature back as much as a decoy. Well, Surprise……………….Reggie, you it from here on out and I hope you make the most of it. Your nolonger the decoy but rather the man with the target on his back.

we win the next three first. If that happens, I wont worry so much about the fourth but it’s on Reggie now. We have all waited and waited for him to “Break out” and at best we have seen glimpses for five years. There wont be any decoys in these next few games except what he does in the passing game. I just don’t see him doing it but if he does I will help Jeff I.B. eat his shirt.

I’ll eat my shirt of Payton gives Reggie more than 12 carries.

That's what i was thinking
Reggie should get most of the reps at RB but will Payton run the ball with Reggie? I am hoping he does but idk for sure if it’s happening
Superbowl bound!!!...I know! do you?! Go Saints!!
I don't see why not...
he had like 7 yards/carry against the Bucks, yah?
"Now you see that evil will always triumph because good is dumb."
But that doesn't matter to Payton
For instance, Ivory has had some outstanding games this season. He had an average of 10.5 yards/carry against Tampa Bay (1st match-up), 7.8 ypc against Cincinnati, and 6.7 ypc against St. Louis. Yet that didn’t translate into Payton giving him the ball more. We still played a pass heavy offense even though Ivory proved he could rack up the yards. I hope I’m wrong, but I expect a 70% pass / 30% run type of game.

Ever think the pass could set up the run?
Maybe that ratio of pass/run is what allowed Ivory to get the maximum yards per carry?
Or that maybe Ivory can’t handle more carries, what with the frequency of his injuries and getting knocked out of games?

Of course it does. But no moreso than the run sets up the pass.
Maybe that ratio of pass/run is what allowed Ivory to get the maximum yards per carry?
No one’s questioning that. He’s questioning the lack of running plays that made the offense as a whole less effective.
Or that maybe Ivory can’t handle more carries, what with the frequency of his injuries and getting knocked out of games?
Was it not Payton who settled on Ivory as a RB? If you want to brush aside his Payton’s reluctancy to use the guy as an alibi for his pass-heavy playcalling, then he should have gone out and drafted a more dependable RB to shoulder that half of the offense. He didn’t. He sank his faith into umpteen Fragile Freddies. That’s a failed experiment, not a free pass. No matter how you slice it, unbalanced playcalling to that degree is unacceptable and has played a substantial role in our struggles. Hell, we’re talking about the CINCINNATI game! Ivory’s not hurt. Ivory’s running well. We’re still pass heavy. We struggle to win. For God’s sake man, put 2 and 2 together already and stop staring at your d***!

That’s the only point I was trying to make. Everything else is your assumption.
then he should have gone out and drafted a more dependable RB to shoulder that half of the offense.
How exactly can that be fixed in the middle of a game to balance playcalling? It’s too late, the draft isn’t until April.

Come to think of it, with the personel on this years team, our pass is probably a bit more successful at setting up the run, than our run is at setting up the pass. The trick is finding the right combination to maximize this offense. But in football in general, I agree with you.

It’s been in shambles since 2006. If they commit to running the football nearly as much as they pass it, they can work through those shambles. They did it last season with Bush and an injury prone UDFA. They did it a couple of times THIS season with Bush and an injury prone UDFA. They can obviously do it again. Doesn’t mean they will. Sean Payton’s still calling the plays. Who knows what we’ll get?

Well Reginald:
Time to s#!t or get off the pot.
"In fact, Sterger claims that, in one of the photos Favre allegedly sent her, he's masturbating — while wearing a pair of Crocs"
I have to think Reggie’s “s#!t time” was in 2007, when Deuce went down against the Titans. For the 2nd overall pick in the draft to be outperformed by an UDFA — not once, but TWICE — that’s just a case of not being cut out for the position. I don’t care who you are. At that point, Payton should have either began grooming him as a full-time WR — you can still occasionally run fake reverses with a WR, they do it with Henderson and Meachem now — or cut his losses, imo. The money they’ve left tied up in this guy over the last three seasons or so is ludicrous. At least, in terms of production. Had he produced at WR, either Henderson or Moore could have conceivably been let go to get him more involved in the offense. Both have re-inked contracts since then. In fact, Moore’s is about to be up again. Funny that Arizona (Matt Leinart), Tennessee (Vince Young) and Denver (Jay Cutler) have all given up on their “can’t miss” first rounders from that draft and we haven’t, considering we’re the ones that have seemingly gotten the least use out of ours.
"I was not on the boat in question" -Darren Sharper
Re: #25 ... CUT THAT CHUMP.
Gotten the least use out of ours? I agree Reggie is overpaid. But c’mon, Reggie has been a contributor on some great offenses.
I posit that we are a better team with Reggie than without him. If he had been a 3rd round pick making 2-3 million a year now, we’d all be satisfied with his contributions when healthy. He was a huge part of our playoff run to the Super Bowl last year (he played great against Arizona, had one bad play and one great play (and a few good ones) against Minn), and was a contributor in the Super Bowl itself.
I agree that looking back we would have been better off using that pick for someone else; but since then, he’s been a significant contributor on the excellent offenses from ’06 – ’09.
Least use as in involvement. The other three are all QBs. Bush has had 911 total touches as a Saint. Cutler had 1220 passing attempts as a Bronco. Young had 1190 with the Titans. Leinart comes up short (595), but that’s just passing attempts. All three have handed the ball off to various RBs. Take Bush’s 911 touches, subtract Leinart’s 595 passing attempts, divide by Leinart’s 29 games played and you’re talking about roughly 11 handoffs per game to surpass Bush’s utilization. Without going the play-by-play route, I don’t think that’s much of a stretch. Maybe if Sean Payton was his head coach. Which could have very easily been the case, when you think about it.
"I was not on the boat in question" -Darren Sharper
If you check out profootballreference.com, they have a metric called AV or average value. Not exactly sure how they tabulate this, but it takes every position into account and grades them on the same scale, based on performance. They haven’t yet posted their 2010 AVs, but going into the season:
Cutler 40
Bush 36
Young 27
Leinart 12
Which seems about right, imo. You have to figure Cutler’s 2010 grade is going to be in the same ballpark as his 2009 grade (10), maybe a little better. His INTs were down and his overall passer rating is right back up with his averages in Denver. Bush was barely used at all this year. It appears the scale minimum is 1, so that’s probably what he’ll net … a 2 tops. Young’s passer rating was the best it’s ever been, as was his INT% (which is included in passer rating). Probably a 9 or 10 there, putting he and Bush on or about equal career value. Leinart remains a dud. 0 points for holding a clipboard. Again, 2 of the other 3 are officially hasta la vista and the 3rd is a dead man walking, in terms of the franchises that drafted them. You do the math.
"I was not on the boat in question" -Darren Sharper
Not sure why you’re comparing him just to QBs, seems a bit awkward. If you insist, I think the Saints would easily take Bush today over those three QBs on a straight up trade (for playing purposes, I mean, not for future trade bait).
And I won’t disagree that Bush has underperformed compared to his draft pick and salary. But I stand by my statement that’s he’s been a significant contributor, and he’s had flashes of excellent play (yes, inconsistent flashes). I still say the Saints are better with him than without him.
I’m comparing them because he/they comprised the upper offensive echelon of the same draft class. The other three have all worn out their welcome with the franchises they were drafted to lead. He hasn’t, though I’m convinced he’s on the cusp of doing so. He’s been given a longer leash (Payton’s decision). When his limited usage (again, Payton’s decision) is taken into account, that’s inexplicable. As a head coach, you either attempt to get a player involved, thereby proving his worth, or you admit your mistake and cut your losses. You don’t just SIT on that player for three more seasons, while his non-guaranteed base salary continues to balloon. Jim Haslett was basically crucified for not pulling the plug on Aaron Brooks, yet Sean Payton is rarely (if ever) called out for coddling HIS favorite toy. What, just because Bush isn’t getting Brooks playing time, that makes it all ok? Out of sight, out of mind? Sorry, that’s not how it works. There’s this thing called financial responsibility and when you’re talking about the potential betterment of an entire TEAM, Payton (and repeat offender Loomis) are both in clear violation of that.
"I was not on the boat in question" -Darren Sharper
If you insist, I think the Saints would easily take Bush today over those three QBs on a straight up trade (for playing purposes, I mean, not for future trade bait).
Ex post facto, my son. Had they not landed Brees, Culpepper or possibly Josh McCown, either Leinart or Young would have been the pick. You can take that one to the bank.
"I was not on the boat in question" -Darren Sharper
I’d also SERIOUSLY doubt your assertion, as far as Cutler is concerned, if salary was the non-issue you make it out to be. Trust me, Chicago would be FAR less willing to entertain that “straight up” trade than the Saints would. They already have their Devin Hester. We have our … Chase Daniel? Hmm, wonder who would benefit more in a Bush-for-Cutler swap.
As far as Young is concerned, Tennessee would trade him for numerous NFL players in a heartbeat, as Bud Adams is reportedly at his wit’s end. That being said, I can’t imagine the Titans NOT hesistating, if Bush was the straight up compensation, They already have two promising young RBs Chris Johnson and Javon Ringer, as well as Randy Moss (who’s reportedly psyched to return) as their resident decoy to open up the offense. What would Bush add to that mix exactly? Good or bad, a starting QB in the prime of his career for a hit-or-miss punt returner? Real iffy.
To Houston for Leinart? That actually sounds like a reasonable trade, in terms of logistics. Bush would complement Foster ok and Leinart may or may not be an upgrade over Daniel. He’s also probably making a lot less now than he was as a top pick, being that he’s the only one of the four that was outright released, at least to this point. Back in the real world, however, if the Saints wanted Leinart as a backup, why wouldn’t they have pursued him when he was on the open market? Maybe they did and we just don’t know about it. In any case, that’s really the only one of the three I could see actually shaking out. The point being that in a trade, it takes two to tango. Bush isn’t the scorching hot commodity you’re making him out to be. There will never be 31 other teams knocking on that door. Even with a restructured sign-and-trade deal in place, PayLoo would only be able to generate legitimate interest from 10 or so teams, I’m guessing. And even then, you’re talking about something along the lines of what we got for Donte Stallworth, in terms of compensation. Which, in this case, I’d be content with.
"I was not on the boat in question" -Darren Sharper
I'm not saying Bush is a scorching hot commodity.
In fact, I’d probably be pleased if we could get a 3rd round pick for him.
I’d be angry as hell if we traded him for Leinart, though… a significant contributor on our offense being traded for a QB who will NEVER lead us to the playoffs? C’mon.
But in any case we’re pretty much arguing past each other. I’m just saying Bush is a contributor, and I’m glad we have him (as opposed to not having him). If we can restructure his contract to a reasonable level (maybe 3 million a year or so) then I’d be happy to keep him. Not only is he a significant contributor, but he sells jersies.
You sound as if you think Bush is a total failure ala Ki-Jana Carter or something. I say he’s a role player, and our offense is better with him than without him. That’s all.
And I’d easily take him over Cutler or Young. Reggie will help us win more games than a backup QB, imo.
Why isn't Sean Payton called out?
Easy. Wins. I’m sure you already knew the answer to that question.
As far as Cutler goes
I would argue it was he that gave up on the Broncos and McDaniel. Seems to have been vindicated after McDaniels got canned after less than 2 seasons.

Bush will be in the backfield and the defense won’t automatically know it’s either a toss or pass to the outside. The offense is laughably predictable when Bush is on the field and I hate that. The outside runs with Bush never make any headway, he always swarmed by 8 defenders, and on the rare occasion there is positive yardage there’s a holding call to bring it back. Let him take it up the gut a few times. He looked great doing that against the Bucks.
