Fleur-de-Links Wild Card Saturday: New Orleans Saints @ Seattle Seahawks - Gameday Edition
Bring out yer dead! Bring out yer dead! This classic bit from Monty Python and the Holy Grail could represent the 7-9 Seattle Seahawks - dead, or not dead. Watch and laugh. We'll see if they are who we thought they were soon enough. And if Reggie brings the wood, we can club them if they're not dead yet.
Your gameday links, tweets, and videos are after the jump, including a Qwest Field beer expose that will rock your world (see Gull's-Eye View).
In addition to the pre-game analysis that follows, something to watch is the weather, so here are the current conditions at Qwest Field.
Are you pumped for this game? Do I even need to ask? Why am I still talking?

As we open the playoffs
I have opted for a new profile picture. Thank you, CP for sharing your image-skills. Just like last year’s Lombardi trophy picture i sported for the playoff run, I’m going with CP’s Two-Dat re-imagining for 2011.
Go Saints!
It's gonna be a great year.
cool!
Thanks, Cathy! Solidarity – kinda like when the players all get mohawks, only it’s less embarrassing to my hair…

I'm Christy, but Cathy is close.
And definitely less embarrassing than a mohawk!

I love this bit from Montalbano's Saints playoff history piece
In the section on the 1991 wild card game vs. Falcons:
The winning touchdown came on Michael Haynes’ dazzling 61-yard catch-and-run with 2:41 remaining. The Falcons were facing second-and-9 at their 39-yard line, with safeties Bennie Thompson and Vencie Glenn blitzing.
The defensive strategy left the Saints four remaining defensive backs in single coverage against the Falcons’ dangerous wide receivers.
That put Haynes, who prepped at Clark High School, against cornerback Milton Mack, who was thrust into the starting lineup in the 14th game of the regular season because of injuries.
Haynes caught the pass at Atlanta’s 45, then spun toward the middle of the field, where he sidestepped Mack and eluded the fast-closing Mills.
“I don’t know how many guys we had rushing,” Mack said. “I just know I had single coverage against a real fast guy. You can’t make mistakes against those guys or they’ll burn you.”
Haynes’ touchdown capped the Falcons’ rally from a 10-0 deficit in the second quarter. New Orleans linebacker Rickey Jackson questioned the logic of using a blitz that normally was used only when an opponent was inside the Saints’ 20.
"When you do that, you’re looking for trouble, " Jackson said. “All I know is a lot of people in this organization got to get better before next season. That goes for coaches and players.”
Rickey Jackson quotes – I miss them so much…

Is Bell even active?
Just because he’s on the roster doesn’t mean he’ll be active for the game. I would imagine they’d favor Wynn over him, since he has “experience.”
It was worth the wait.
not sure if he's playing today
I’d imagine not (unless he’s designated as emergency QB – ha!!). My “breakout game” statement refers to whenever it happens in the near future…I just want to SING!!!!!

I voted running game, ie Reggie.
He needs to show up today. We need him like no other right now. Drew can’t do it all.

Isn't that beer story something?
Stadium officials:
We had no idea we were %#$^&*ing fans at the cash register!
We will look into this right away.
“What’s that? We’re charging more for cups that actually hold the same amount of beer?
We'll look into that, too.

Yeah, right. Had no idea, my ass.

Looks like I may miss most of the game today. :o(
We have the Oklahoma Governor’s Inauguration Ball tonight here at the Aquarium. Because of security, I’m locked in after 3. I’m gonna be popping in and out here to catch the game updates, but will have to miss the live action.
"Don't ever sell your saddle, cause life's a long, long ride."- Randy Travis
that blows
I bet your work often has you away from the TV at gametime. So, will you record the game at home (to watch later) while keeping up with events “on-the-field” in real time as much as you can?
If I’m going to be away, I try to maintain a “media blackout” until I can watch the game…
It's gonna be a great year.
by Hans Petersen on Jan 8, 2011 10:10 AM CST up reply actions
That is unusual, Ranger.
Not a lot of us around. It’s pretty rare to have to miss a game, HansDat. I live only 4 blocks from the AQ and get called in from time to time, but my staff handles things pretty well when I’m not around.
"Don't ever sell your saddle, cause life's a long, long ride."- Randy Travis
oooh, you have staff - BMOA (big man on the aquarium) NICE
Do you and Ranger ever have to take down an aquatic security threat? (you know, sour sea bass with lasers, upset octopus, etc.)
It's gonna be a great year.

We had to dartgun a misbehaving triggerfish once.
But he was also diseased and had to be destroyed anyway. But, being in the coral reef tank, we figured he get up into some cranny in the rocks and die and we’d never get him out.

I'm recording the game, but my wife will never be able to keep it secret.
This event goes on til about midnight, so there’s not a chance that I won’t hear the outcome. But I"ll watch it tomorrow anyway.

Let's talk aquariums
Other than your own, what’s your favorite aquarium? Mine is the Monterey Bay Aquarium. Small, as modern aquariums go, but mesmerizing. I was disappointed in Atlanta’s.
It was worth the wait.
Mine is the National Aquarium in Baltimore.
We do a lot animal swapping with Monterey Bay, but I haven’t been able to go out there yet.
"Don't ever sell your saddle, cause life's a long, long ride."- Randy Travis
humm I will have to think about What aquarium is my fave
I have been to Baltimore a bunch of times. I went with the AALSO conference in 08 and when I was Very young. But I do enjoy being a Aquatic Animal Life support Tech. I was in the Aquarium for Katrina, Infact I was in the Building during the Storm and I have stories that would scare the crap out of Husbandry, Facilites, and Life support opperators all over the country. The aquarium became my home for about 5 months after the storm on and off to get that place back open.
We've discussed that many times here.
That must have been an incredible nightmare.

I can't wait to go to Monterey Bay
As a former marine biologist, that’s a lifelong dream.
by Stuart Carlton on Jan 8, 2011 1:29 PM CST via mobile up reply actions
I can’t decide which part I like better…the open ocean, or the kelp forest. I’ve never been to the one in Baltimore, so maybe I’ll have to put that on my list.
It was worth the wait.
We have a kelp forest exhibit here that's modeled after the one at Monterey
It’s not not nearly as big, though.
"Don't ever sell your saddle, cause life's a long, long ride."- Randy Travis
Yes Monterey Bay is an open system
That means they pull the water in and then send it back out
New Orleans makes its own water
Aquarium of the Pacific has it trucked in. yeah I know we right next to the water, but its the LA river so we get the water brought in to us.
We have to make ours onsite.
Two 50,000 gal. tanks just for the shark exhibit alone. Of course, the sharks have half a million gals.

I believe they pull in ocean water from the bay for their day to day operations.

There’s a lot of respect for the Shed in this business, though. But they need to start upgrading their galleries and freshen it up a bit.

Beergate
As CSC’s unofficial Beer Correspondent and former Superdome Beer Man, I’ve done some looking into the Beergate saga.
It turns out that the stadium was screwing up in favor of the fans.
From the Seahawks’ statement in the linked article:
Fans who purchased a 16 oz. beer actually received 20 oz. of beer for the 16 oz. price. Fans that purchased the 20 oz. beer received the amount they purchased. We are working with Levy Restaurants to follow up with the cup vendor about the measurement and to determine how long this has been occurring at Qwest Field.
So they’ve been serving 20-oz beers at the 16-oz price for quite some time. That’s my kind of lagniappe!
good work
I copped out – didn’t really read the story and went for the easy, lazy, sensationalistic angle, thinking the 20 ounce payers only received 16 oz. Thank you for clearing that up. I was more focused on sarcasm quotes and truncated profanity, even. I’ve got some things to clean up in the film room, and get better for tomorrow’s F-D-L.
Don’t ask me about injuries. I’m just going to report status, and nothing else. Next guy that asks about high ankle sprain is shown the door.
It's gonna be a great year.

Would that be one of our DE’s?

I'm hoping the Saints win this one today for a different reason...
We’ll be in NOLA next weekend for the Little Feat show at the House of Blues and we’d like to party with our fellow WhoDats. So we need the Boys to win today so that we have the next round to cheer for.
"Don't ever sell your saddle, cause life's a long, long ride."- Randy Travis
Well, I voted "Other" because..................
Win or lose, Reggies performance under this pressure will define his carreer as a Saint. If he performs well and we win, I see us advanceing in the playoffs with confidence. There are so many unsettling questions as to how this team will respond to the loss of Thomas and Ivory, so a major contribution by Reggie could make all the difference today. My confidence is not so much right now, even if we defeat the Hawks………..unless, Reggie brings the wood!!!!
My Magnificent Black and Gold Warriors
If you want to spot a CSCer in the stands, I’ll be the one whose Saints sign has a Duck shoutout.
Let’s continue the tradition of New Orleanians fighting bravely on Jan 8th!
I can tell you one thing: the grass in Tiger Stadium tastes the best.
The Oregon Ducks once took a delay of game penalty, just to see how it felt.

Seriously…the SEC is so far and away the superior conference (no matter what happens with Auburn) I wonder that it’s even controversial anymore.
It was worth the wait.
Not in my book. And I'm a Big 12 guy.
But since we lived in NOLA and Mobile, I’ve become a true SEC believer. My wife is in LOVE with the SEC and she’s an OU grad!
