This is probably Mickey and Sean's worst move of this past preseason.

If not for Jason David, I’d say it was their worst move ever. They should have kept Jonathan Goodwin. He’s now with the 49ers and they’re doing pretty well, not that Goodwin is the main reason for that. If it wasn’t broke before, why fix it? I thought Goodwin did well for us and this makes me even more upset that they let him walk.

I think it came down to money and an eye to the future

Goodwin is on the backend of his career, though he’s still pretty good. But to keep him would have required a pretty big paycheck to the end of his career. With DLP and Tennant progressing, I think they just wanted a stop gap until one of them was ready. Getting someone with the leadership and experience of Kreutz was a good idea, even if it didn’t pan out the way they hoped. Good thing DLP has stepped up his game.

Non come close to JMFD, but many are worse than OK.

by Dan Kelly on Oct 21, 2011 11:23 AM CDT up reply actions

Worst move ever was drafting Reggie Bush over D’Brick. This isn’t even close to that, imo. In fact, I’d rank Dan Morgan a worse move, just because of his injury history.

I kept hoping we could trade down to the Jets for their 2 first round picks that year…

by BlackandGold4ever on Oct 21, 2011 12:22 PM CDT up reply actions

Same here. I even held out hope after the fact, thinking there might be a bird-in-the-hand swap, a la Manning for Rivers a couple of years prior. There’s just so many other directions they could have gone there with a healthy Deuce, and both Drew Brees and Michael Bennett already in the fold. Not to mention all of the better between the tackle runners they could have drafted later.

You can toga party, but you can't toga fish.

by coldpizza on Oct 21, 2011 12:43 PM CDT up reply actions

On a related note, what about shifting Jammal Brown to LT, after they DIDN’T draft D’Brick? That has to rank up there, too. Trade away Wayne Gandy within the division, for a career backup safety and go with a RT to protect the blind side of your franchise QB coming off rotator cuff surgery. No real catastrophe to point to there, but c’mon. Even if Gandy is completely finished, you should be getting more than that in a trade for your incumbent starting LT. Same goes for Stallworth for Simoneau, even though the 4th rounder was used wisely (J. Evans) in hindsight.

If I were the Saints front office and we won another SB

I wouldn’t give him a ring. I can see if he was hurt and had to go on IR but its completely different when you quit. I see this as quitting on your team when you get to week 7 and just now realize “you don’t have the passion for it” anymore. The reason he even agreed to come here IMO was to see if what the Bears were saying was really true or they just didn’t want to pay him. Now that he realizes he doesn’t have anything left in the tank to compete at a high level in todays NFL he wants to quit. If he was a real HOFer he would swallow his pride help the younger De le Puente and Tennant then retire in the offseason possibly with a SB ring. i just think that he was never comfortable with the Saints. Although he’s respected around the league he never really had the same clout in the Saints lockeroom.

If all three centers on the roster got hurt, do you honestly believe the newly acquired center would be calling protection the following week? That’s just a prevalent responsibility assignment. Odds are it would be the guard. I mean, by that logic, a MLB would be more important than an OLB, despite more than half the starting MLBs in the league falling into the same production tier statistically. Position importance should be measured in terms of tangible involvement in regards to the direct success or failure of the average play, more so than anything else. Technically, you don’t even need a center to run a play. Check out the definition of a snap from Wikipedia:

The ball may be handed, thrown, or even rolled, and its trajectory and the ball during that passage are called “the snap”. The snapper is almost always the center. The ball is almost always sent between the snapper’s legs, but only in Canadian football is that required.

If you can do without him all together, that sure as hell doesn’t sound like the most important position to me. I’d like to see an offense do without a LT all together in a pinch. The only way you would ever see that happen, is if the QB was left handed or it was some kind of gimmick play, like a swinging gate. And even then, there’d likely be an OT on the field, as they’re typically your most agile, athletic downfield blockers.

You can toga party, but you can't toga fish.

If you picked up a veteran C through free agency or trade, yes. Which is why you spend money or draft picks on a veteran C.

I mean, by that logic, a MLB would be more important than an OLB, despite more than half the starting MLBs in the league falling into the same production tier statistically.

MLBs are more important than OLBs. Ray Lewis, Brian Urlacher, Patrick Willis, Jerod Mayo, Tedy Bruschi, Jonathan Vilma, Karlos Dansby, etc.

LOL. You can direct-snap to a running back, without a QB on the field (see: Wildcat). Clearly that means Quarterbacks don’t matter at all, right?
I’d like to see an offense do without a LT all together in a pinch.

That’s called an “unbalanced line”, and you’ll see teams like the Colts and Pats use it on occasion to create mismatches, if you watch closely.

Important is not synonymous with more plentiful or even more well known. Impact OLBs are considerably fewer and farther between. That makes the best of the best more sought after, i.e., important.

You can direct-snap to a running back, without a QB on the field (see: Wildcat). Clearly that means Quarterbacks don’t matter at all, right?

When compared to what other relevant position? I wasn’t even aware that there was one within the same vein as a QB. This is a conversation on the importance of offensive linemen, as they relate to one another.

That’s called an "unbalanced line", and you’ll see teams like the Colts and Pats use it on occasion to create mismatches, if you watch closely.

no problem with that opinion

we look at him on our team, not comparing to the rest of the league (although rookie starting every game and going to the pro-bowl is nothing to sneeze at).

I salute Olin Kreutz for knowing when to call it quit! The game has become too
tenuous for him and instead of just getting paid for doing nothing (like most players
and even most everyday people would do) he decides to leave. Kudos to him!!!

Also, Brian De la Puente (not De la Puenta) is a very capable backup (now starter) as we’ve all seen, and as Olin knew himself; so he is not leaving the Saints in a dire situation at the center position!

The man has been a consumate pro for 13-14 years in the NFL, I wish him nothing but the
best in his future endeavors and thanks for giving the Saints all he had left in the tank!!!

Looks to me like most are saying props and kudos to him for being man enough to step up and admit he doesn’t have it anymore. Either that, or they are glad he is leaving because his replacement gets a chance to see if they can step up in his place. Very few are putting him down for quitting—doesn’t mean they aren’t glad about the fact though!

Media overreaction

From John Clayton

Saints center Olin Kreutz has left the team because he has lost his passion for the game of football, leaving a hole in middle of New Orleans’ offensive line.

Clayton obviously hasn’t watched much Saints game film on Kreutz. We’re probably better off without him. Here’s more on how the decision went down:

“He called me on Monday and Tuesday and said, ‘I don’t know if I can keep on doing this,’” Bartelstein said on “The Waddle and Silvy Show” on ESPN 1000 in Chicago. “Went in and talked to (coach) Sean Payton and (general manager) Mickey Loomis and expressed it to them. They tried to talk him out of it. They wanted him to stay and he actually thought he was going to give it another whirl and called yesterday and said, ‘I just know, it’s not in my heart. I’m not going to keep collecting a check if I know deep inside me I can’t bring what I need to bring to play every week.’”

“I think there’s probably some correlation to [how things went down with the Bears],” Bartelstein said. “It hurt him a lot the way it went down with the Bears. He wanted to finish his career with the Bears, so I think there’s a part of it. But how much, it’s hard to say.”

Bartelstein said that Kreutz will not retire immediately.

“We’re not going to file anything right now,” he said. “I just never think it makes sense to do that right away. He’s going to step back and spend time with his family. My guess is I’m not sure he’ll play again, but we’ll see. The Saints made it clear that if he changed his mind, they’d love to have him come back. But knowing Olin and the way he handles himself, I don’t think that’s going to happen, but we’ll see.”

Could the Bears bring him back?

That’s what having a defensive-minded coach will do. Although I would have thought that GW would have brought in somebody worthwhile on the D-line for a pass rush. Cam Jordan works hard, but is going to need some coaching to learn some moves or something…

by BlackandGold4ever on Oct 21, 2011 1:21 PM CDT up reply actions

Cam Jordan is a rookie. Almost all rookie suck their first year.

Jerry Rice, Emmitt Smith and hundreds of other HOF players, sucked their first year.

(I’m not saying Cam is a HOF; just pointing out that even the greatest NFL players sucked as rookies.)

That’s why rookies shouldn’t be expected to come in and create wins immediately. Free Agents do that.

Rookies are for the future.

Yeah, the ice is what I’m worried about. They don’t allow chains here and there are a lot of hilly areas that I may or may not get vinegared/salted/whatever the eff they do on a timely basis. My truck is just a little 4 cylinder FWD and I just know I’m going to have to look for alternate routes, if I don’t do something. The worst part is, my struts are shot and my front end is out of alignment, so I’m going through regular (read: cheaper) front tires every 6 months as it is. I don’t want to sink a lot of money into it, as it’s 15 yrs old. At the same time, I don’t want to be shelling out money for tires every time I turn around. With any luck, a set will last me through each winter at minimum and I can go the cheap route the other 8 months.

I think that with the complexities of football, it is not always evident what factors decide a game.

I know that INTs and fumble recoveries and TDs and 53 yd fgs at the buzzer get the headlines, but it is in the trenches that the games are often always won. That being said, if DLP starts opening day and doesn’t pick up a blitz and Brees gets plastered and injured, everything is different. Also, DLP didn’t go up against the second team defense every play of preseason nor stand around 100% of the other time. He was brought along to be ready for this moment and I dare say he probably was a lot more prepared two weeks ago than 5 weeks ago. And we had the luxury to do that since we had a veteran to fill in temporarily and not subject an inexperienced player to opening day and the first few weeks that could have been a disaster. If you don’t believe me, reference the Jets playing games without Mangold which clearly had a large difference, reference the Eagles last year when their starting center went down and they plunked, and witness the Eagles this year with a patchwork line that is still in flux. One guy anywhere on the field can make things turn south real fast. And that player doesn’t have to be a QB or a CB or any particular position. So, I think Kreutz helped . And if Stujo is accurate, and if Bushrod learned something, I am sure Tenant and DLP did also.

Everyone in the Saints org. and in the media surrounding the team has nothing but good things to say about Olin and everyone on this site is bashing him left and right. Mick Tingelhoff – 6 Pro Bowls, 5x First team All-Pro, retired 1978.

Kreutz should sign up for that fraternity. Doug Atkins and Alex Brown could assist with the initiation.

It’ll be a long wait. The guys I already mentioned, Forrest Blue, Kevin Mawae, maybe even Mark Stepnowski. All more deserving, imo.

This guy is pathetic.

Really? You can’t come to work for millions of dollars? I get off my ass every day for a lot less. Look at this crap:

has been a tumultuous year for the 34-year-old center, who played the first 13 seasons of his career with the Chicago Bears but could not come to terms on a contract this offseason. Kreutz, a six-time Pro Bowl performer, had said he was willing to take a pay cut to stay in Chicago, but negotiations became public and messy and Kreutz finally signed a one-year deal with the Saints.[\quote]-espn

:The Chicago Tribune reports the Saints shopped C Olin Kreutz ahead of Tuesday’s trade deadline. New Orleans reportedly “liked what it saw of” backup C Brian De la Puente when Kreutz missed time with a sprained knee, and may have been planning to start him going forward regardless of whether or not Kreutz walked away. Kreutz has not officially retired, and has returned to his native Hawaii to “see where he’s at.” He will be placed on the “did not report” list in New Orleans, voiding the remainder of his $2 million salary.

Knew he was losing his starting job and THEN quit.

Sprained knee AND a bruised ego? Ouch. So, who wants to pitch in and get this pu*** a Get Well Soon card?

He did say it was a loss of motivation

He had a choice of trying to work his butt off and get back into a place (both physically and mentally) where he could challenge for a starting spot, or he could choose not to. He went with the latter.

When it becomes a job instead of a game it's time to leave

there is no point to just hang on for a paycheck if the fun has left the game.

PFT:

Despite swirling rumors that Kreutz’s exit was preceded by a scuffle of some type with offensive line coach Aaron Kromer, the reality is that Kreutz and the team made a mutual decision to part ways after a review of the film indicated that Brian de la Puente was the better option.

Not a scuffle, more of a kerfuffle.

Kreutz tried to wipe that smile off Kromer's face

but then he realized he lacked the motivation to do it, so he just left
