No

Do I really need to say more? No. We aren’t. Not right now. Maybe we can get back to there someday, but not right now.

by FriarBob on Oct 31, 2011 2:01 PM CDT reply actions

Yes

But like any other team prone to brain cramps and momentum swings. No reason to jump overboard just yet. I think we all have been spoiled in a way since that Super Bowl and forget what a normal or substandard team looks like. We are not the Vikings, Dolphins or Colts. We have an elite offence, but if parts of that offence takes the afternoon off, everyone suffers.

Get pumped up to beat up those Buc’s girls and boys. Redemption will be lovely :)

I like Hamburgers!

They better be ready for redemption Sunday

because the next 2 games are division must wins. Win against Tampa because we have to to stay on top of the division. Win against the Falcons to take a commanding lead in the division and also because we hate them and want to see them fail and fail miserably especially to the hands of Brees and Co.

To have an elite team...

you got to have an elite QB. This is not what I’m seeing since the beginning of the 2010 season…

Why?

Been impressed much with Brees last year? God I hope not…

And how about this year? Oh yeah, I forgot, He did extend his streak with a TD pass to 35 in a row…

Drew Breeees!

What bothered you the most about 2010?

Was it the interceptions? Was it two games that we can say he lost because of multiple interceptions?

Because interception were too high in 2008 too. Like 18 of them. QBs lose their jobs over that. But, it’s usually because they can’t produce game winning drives over and over again, nor basically have as many touchdown passes as the year he threw only 10.

This is a serious question.

I don't mind...

the strength of his arm or the fact that he doesn’t run, specially when he goes down head first instead of sliding. My beef is his poor decisions on the field since 2010. Like he wants to do it ll by himself. And it’s not getting any better this year.

Really?

My beef is his poor decisions on the field since 2010. Like he wants to do it ll by himself.

Is that what you really think is happening? Drew doesn’t “want” to put the team on his shoulders, but rather, is forced to do that, much too often. Blame the play calling and poor O-line execution for that. Defenses have known what to do against us since the ‘09 season because Sean won’t get his head out of his A**, and give the run game a chance to force defenses to play us honest. Until that happens Drew will have to carry the team, want to or not. And when his O-line can’t even keep him upright even he has little chance of that.

Forced to carry the team?

At the end of first half? I don’t think so.

At least, he’s not making those submarines throws when going down like he did last year. Wait, didn’t he do something similar with Sproles last Sunday?

To have an elite team, you must have an elite QB. This is not what I’m seeing…

What are your requirements for being an elite QB in today’s NFL? How many QB’s, on a comparative basis, comprise “elite status”? The top five? The top three? Where do you rank Brees amongst the current 32 starting QB’s in the league?

Who do you think are the elite quarterbacks currently playing? Who would you prefer being the Saints QB instead of Brees? I would assume the answer to both quesions would be the same. I would also assume the teams those QB’s play for would also be the current elite teams since you feel a team’s elite status is dependent on having an elite QB.

Other than Aaron Rogers and Tom Brady, who else? Ben Roethlisberger?

by Drew-Dat on Nov 1, 2011 10:42 PM CDT up reply actions

Tom Brady can't be elite.

After all, he has similar stats to Brees. Must mean he sucks ass too.

by Jon Banks on Nov 1, 2011 10:48 PM CDT up reply actions

Come on Jon...

There is world of difference between not being elite and sucking don’t you think? So far this year I believe only Rodgers deserves that title.

I believe PayLoo built the Saints on the Pats model which is interchangeables parts. Unless you consider Matt Cassel to be elite, how would you explain otherwise that he managed to get 11 wins for New England when Brady went down. Same probably goes for the Saints if it wasn’t for having Chase as a backup QB. And even him didn’t do too bad when his number was called so far. Schemes baby…

Not saying there elite but I’m confident Flaco, Eli, Stafford, Fitzpatrick, Freeman and Bradford would do just fine under center for the Saints. Heck, I’d even be curious to see what Romo could do with proper coaching…

Had to look twice to see if coldpizza wrote this.

I don’t disagree with the concept, but I do take exception to some of those names.

Straight Up Homo could be an elite QB if he had Brees’ work ethic and quit wasting time on golf.

With regards to my questions, your answers appear to be:

There’s only one elite QB in the NFL (Rogers) and only one elite team (Packers). All other QB’s or teams can be considered “above average”, “average”, “below average” or “bad”.

And, you would prefer any of the aforementioned QB’s over Brees, or at the very least, feel any of them could be interchangeable with him. .

Is that right?

Having an elite QB won’t turn a whole team into elite but, besides Trent Dilfer, I think your foundation should start under center if you want to be considered as such. And deliver.

I surely wouldn’t want Vick playing for the Saints.

and by “and give the run game a chance to force defenses to play us honest.”

You mean call/install more effective run plays and coach up the o-line to block better, right?

Because if we continue to allow our run game to be stopped but 7 and 6 guys, no defense will respect our run game and add more players to the box.

If they can stop us with 7, they will NEVER add an 8th man to the box.

by Dan Kelly on Nov 1, 2011 11:36 AM CDT up reply actions

That's all part of play calling isn't it?

We have plenty of running plays that actually work. We just don’t use them. Play the outside runs that work and all of a sudden the up the middle ones work also. Our O-line couldn’t handle the rush and blitz packages. so blame the play calling for not adjusting to this. Put some TEs and RBs in there to help the blocking to protect Drew and the pass game would open up also. Give drew enough time and someone will get open. Like I said this one was on the coaches for not adjusting, in any fashion. Yes Dave pointed out plenty of open receivers that Drew didn’t have time to see. It’s easy to point them out when you can pause and rewind the recording to hunt for them. Find them at game speed with The D running you down.

Oh this is why the long slow decline argument

Met with more scoffing than agreement. It just seemed very abitrary to say “Well, that’s it, folks. You’ve seen him at his best. It’s all down hill from here.”

It’s the arm strength? Never had a big arm to begin with but threw a beauty to Devery Henderson that made most sports network highlights this very season. He’s not athletic? Nope he can’t run forward, but he’s got scrambling footwork that is a beauty to watch.

Some of it’s the whole Drew BREEEES! can do no wrong thing, some of it is just acknowledging good to excellent play when you see it.

Yes.

Barely. This is the Saints MO, lose to horrifically bad teams. Watch the Rams lose big next week.

However, this is a good team in Drew and a good secondary. Porter is starting to become garbage at even being a nickel, but that’s why we drafted JP. Give him a year to learn the ropes, and he’ll replace Porter at nickel as P-Rob becomes a good-great starter in the future. Seriously, I’m loving the P-Rob potential right now.

Also, Saints can go toe-toe with any team in the league right now…so long as they aren’t winless.

Final note, Patriots lost to the Browns last year, like the Saints. Packers lost 6 games last year, to a lot of hapless teams too. Bad luck happens sometimes. It happened Sunday, and if it happens again, then I’ll decide.

“Packers lost 6 games last year”

And during one of the Patriots SB seasons, they won 7 or 8 games by 4 points or less. They weren’t dominant, by any means… but they won it all.

Can we win it all? I’m less sure now. But, yes it’s still possible. We still have a great team.

Great teams aren’t perfect teams.

No

I’m lowering my expectations for the rest of the season. They had all of the look of a team expecting to have a win handed to them on a silver platter. Payton needs to go back to calling plays because Carmichael showed his lack of experience. And Gregg Williams needs to be more selective with his blitzes. I’m ashamed of this team right now and I truly hope they’re ashamed of themselves. If not, the season is lost.

Even if they somehow destroy the Bucs this week, that still won’t erase the memory of this shameful game and the half-ass performance they collectively put forth.

give it a month or two…

Either we’ll be riding high on our way to a championship, or you’ll have other poor performances more fresh in your (our) mind to stress over.

it's all how you finish. Just ask the Patriots..or the Yankees.....or the Phillies.....or Miami Heat.

or, conversely, ask the 2009 Saints. Now, if we finish strong, we’re in business. If not, we are like all the others who don’t finish strong. The early season and some of the middle hardly counts. Starting this week, it’s all on the line.

Haven't heard this said, or I've missed it

“The Rams were Due”, a win.
Also, noticed the 1st PT run was for positive yds, he goes out, Ivory comes in, runs sideways for a min/no gain. Sproles hasn’t touched the ball. Pass,Pass.Pass, then Ivory no gain. I would have liked to see PT and Sproles establish something early, and maybe give Ivory some touches later, the dude hasn’t seen live gm. action in almost a yr. The Rams were fired up, and we didn’t handle situational play calling very well, same in the TB gm.
