These stats were gained while the starter of nontalented backs.
These stats were accumulated as a third down back in a very talented group of backs.

Wow. You sure outdid yourself this time, Banks.
What’s tomorrow’s stat of the day? Apples are red, oranges are not?

by coldpizza on Oct 6, 2011 12:19 PM CDT up reply actions

What?

I compared someone who was a starter to a 3rd down back. You’d almost never compare the two since the starter is supposed to have more stats. However, the starter doesn’t have more stats in this case. Which is the only reason they can be compared. A starter, in what is expected to be a run heavy offense, can’t get more stats than a 3rd down back.

by Jon Banks on Oct 6, 2011 2:25 PM CDT up reply actions

Apples and oranges can be compared, also. That doesn’t make it a GOOD comparison. What does his being in the lineup on the first offensive snap have to do with anything? He was technically a “starter” with the Saints and didn’t do d*** here, either. What’s expected to be a run heavy offense BY WHOM? Miami is currently 56.1% PASS heavy. They brought in Bush as a primary offensive weapon this offseason, someone who has NEVER excelled as a rusher at the pro level. Do you honestly believe the Dolphins were unaware of this? They were simply telling Bush what he wanted to hear, so he’d agree to the trade. As far as actual offensive production goes, Bush has accounted for 38.8% of the Dolphins’ backfield yardage. Sproles has accounted for 45.7% of the Saints’. Granted, Bush is being used 47% of the time to Sproles’s 30%. That’s far more indicative of the of talent around them though, as you alluded to. Miami is a two man backfield. New Orleans is a three man backfield. Bush’s utilization should taper off some with Slaton now in the mix, meaning his yardage will, as well. For what it’s worth, it’s not uncommon for a 3rd down back in a RBBC to outperform a “starter” in a RBBC statistically. You’re playing up his “starter” status, like he’s getting the lion’s share of the touches. He’s not. In terms of cumulative statistics, Sproles is outperforming him in most every facet of the game. Was this unexpected? Did this necessitate a self-proclaimed “Stat of the Week” breakdown? Of course not. He plays for the more explosive team on offense. He has more talent around him at RB. He has a top tier QB to keep opposing front sevens honest. The only real advantage Bush has is that Miami utilizes their RBs more often in at least some capacity (not necessarily rushing) and that advantage is smaller this season than it has been in years. The reason? Thomas/Bush is no Brown/Williams. It doesn’t take a rocket scientist to figure that out.

You can toga party, but you can't toga fish.

by coldpizza on Oct 7, 2011 7:24 AM CDT up reply actions

Miami is also 0-4, so they have to pass more.
Do you honestly believe the Dolphins were unaware of this?

Yes. Sparano said Reggie Bush would be an every-down back, despite him being Reggie Bush. They’re also paying him every-down running back money.

You’re playing up his "starter" status, like he’s getting the lion’s share of the touches. He’s not.

He was. Until Miami realised he can’t. And now he doesn’t. In fact, he’s barely getting on the field at times. Bush had every opportunity, but remember he’s still Reggie Bush.

$2.5M in 2011 is hardly every-down running back money.

He was. Until Miami realised he can’t.

Circa 2007, when the rest of the league “realised” [sic] he can’t. They wanted him as a complementary back to Thomas, fed him a line to get him on board and that’s exactly what he’s become. No surprises.

Not everyone is as gullible as the Reggies and Comedics of the world
Dolphins acquired Reggie Bush from the Saints for S Jonathon Amaya.
Bush gets a new two-year, $9.75 million deal to be the Dolphins’ scat back and complement for rookie Daniel Thomas. While Bush won’t suddenly turn into an early-down back in Miami, he does figure to see more rushing attempts than he got over the last couple of years in New Orleans’ situational scheme. Still, Bush’s name is worth way more than his fantasy game, even in PPR circles. Thomas is the unquestioned feature back and will push for 250 carries.

Quote:

Before training camp:

When asked about Reggie Bush Tuesday, coach Tony Sparano said, “I would think he’s going to have the most touches and the most carries.”

During training camp:
"This is something three weeks into training camp here or whatever it is, four weeks into training camp and we’re making a decision to do and again Reggie Bush is going to be the first runner out the gate here. I mean he’s going to be the starting running back. That’s what we’re doing so this is a different deal here, different role totally."

Reggie thought he was a feature-back, too:
“It’s an opportunity I’ve wanted, and envisioned, as long as I’ve played football,” said Bush, who won’t be allowed to join his teammates on the field until the NFL Players Association is recertified, which is expected sometime next week.

Even a week ago:
Though Thomas is averaging 4.9 per carry compared with Bush’s 2.9 this season, Sparano said, "Reggie is the No. 1 running back right now." He said he used Bush at least for a portion of every series Sunday and "I think that’s probably the way I’m going to use him until I’m proven otherwise.

You’d almost never compare the two since the starter is supposed to have more stats.

“More stats”. What does that even mean? They have the same number of statistical categories. Is “yardage” now synonymous with “statistics”? Is “more” now synonymous with “better”? If so, I must have missed those memos.

You can toga party, but you can't toga fish.

by coldpizza on Oct 7, 2011 7:28 AM CDT up reply actions

All I’m saying is, you shouldn’t compare the two statistically because they’re in two very different situations. That fact shouldn’t get thrown out of the window, just because the results of the comparison aren’t what you’d expect them to be, based on those differences. In recognizing that the results are unorthodox, all you’re truly doing is validating the faultiness of the comparison.

More TDs and fewer fumbles

Who has them? I’ll give you a hint – he doesn’t play for the Saints anymore.

I’m as happy as anyone the Saints signed Darren, but enough already with all the snide, self-congratulatory jabs at Reggie. He’s moved on. Time for folks here to do the same (and be thankful he didn’t go to a good NFC team).

by HB-NOLA on Oct 5, 2011 10:35 PM CDT reply actions   1 recs

I agree about letting Reggie move on..

but who does Reggie have fewer fumbles than? Mark Sanchez?

Reggie has 2 fumbles this year to Darren’s zero. Reggie also has almost double Darren’s fumbles career-wise (21-13).

by JRogers on Oct 6, 2011 10:15 AM CDT up reply actions

I compiled all the stats for their careers several weeks ago in a discussion about this. As a percentage of touches, Bush has fewer fumbles than Sproles. Naturally those numbers didn’t include the last few weeks, so I don’t know if the percentages have changed in Sproles’ favor. They may have.

My point is why the hell does anyone here care? At least once a week there’s some rant about how much press a crappy team like the Eagles are getting, when the Saints get so little. This is the same thing. How does a post about a tweet about Bush on Tosh.0 deserve front page status and as many comments as Juge’s offensive player grades? If I want to read about how bad Reggie is sucking this year, I can go over to the Phinsider where I’m sure they are ranting about it.

I was very interested in discussing the ups and downs of Reggie’s performance, when he played for the Saints.

now the matter can finally be settled.

Apparently not – why else we would keep seeing posts about him here, with the debate raging on? I would guess there are more comments about Bush on active CSC threads right now than there are about any of the current Saints RBs. I’ll admit I’m partly to blame by coming back here to make this comment, and more importantly for not having posted a FanPost about why Ingram keeps getting the lion’s share of rushes when Pierre is clearly running better right now. But I don’t get to decide what’s on the front page, and by extension, what gets the most attention.

I just find it disturbing, and a little annoying, that so many Saints fans are wallowing in schadenfreude about Reggie’s current performance and situation on a sub-par offense. I don’t understand the fascination with a former Saints player – it’s not like anyone is posting about Mike Bell failing even to make a practice squad this year.
