This is definitely one to get psyched for

This one worries me, mainly because of the mobile QB of Carolina and the Saints being slow up front. If Newton wants to run, I can’t think of how they will stop him from getting 5-10 yards at will. Saints will have to bring the blitz pretty hard if they want to contain Carolina.

by Valmo on Oct 6, 2011 7:08 AM CDT reply actions

P.s. Saints will need to put up 14 pts quickly like last week and make Carolina play from behind and be more susceptible to mistakes. If not, we are looking at another shootout, and it could go either way.

The last thing I wanted in this division was another mobile quarterback

Vick used to run all over us every game. And now we have to deal with this kid for the next 10 years.

Unless he likes to make pit bulls fight against each other,

or does some other foolish stunt that will get him fired from the Panthers. He may go to jail like Vick and then come back and be with another division.

Transportation of stolen property. He didn’t steal it…but knowingly transported it knowing it was stolen. Basically someone else stole it and gave it to him. He knew it was stolen, brought it to his dorm yada yada yada.

Water under the bridge…kids do stupid stuff. To think the young man would do anything like that again regardless of the situation is ridiculous. Pretty much about as ridiculous as you keeping your fingers crossed hoping someone becomes a bad member of society because you’re scared of what it means to your football team. Yeah

I love the fact that we as Saints fans have come to expect perfection. But it’s way too easy to fall into the trap of wanting a sack or INT on every play on D. There is a difference between expecting perfection and absolutely demanding it. The very best defenses in NFL history occasionally gave up big plays (and I am in NO way saying the Saints D is anywhere near the best at anything, I recognize the problems), I’m just saying that giving up some plays isn’t necessarily the end of the world. They’re not always (or ever) going to get it right.

by Jimbo03 on Oct 7, 2011 7:11 AM CDT up reply actions

Another Panthers fan here. I’m not going to predict the score but I’ll simply say: we hung 13 points early on the Packers. We held them scoreless until the half. The same team yours got into a shoot out with.

We might have lost to the Cardinals but they blitzed on every play or every other play. Cam handled it just fine. Greenbay tried the same tactic. Camouflaged blitzes… Clay Matthews couldn’t bring Cam down. The Bears tried. Peppers was only effective in blocking a field goal.

The game looks to be more competitive than some of y’all are giving credit for. The Panthers are a lot more competitve than they were last year. I’m hoping the outcome is different than last year.

Might want to look at your stat sheet again. I’m seeing 4 sacks each from Arizona and Green Bay in those first two games. That’s not mentioning the 4 INTs across the same 2 games. If that’s handling the blitz then I hope he handles the hell out of the Saints blitzes this week.

"I want to hand this trophy to the MVP of the Super Bowl -- and the MVP of the entire league.''

by VAsaintsfan on Oct 6, 2011 12:22 PM CDT up reply actions

For the record......

Two of those “sacks” were QB runs that went out of bounds behind the line of scrimmage. One was a botched snap that Cam dove onto. Two of those INT’s were tipped by the receiver. Not making excuses though. A sack is a sack and a pick is a pick, but when put into perspective, they weren’t as bad as the stat sheet makes them look.

Your points are valid though. I think most Carolina fans will tell you that we’re “handling” the blitz because, of the number of blitz’s against us this season. That, and the fact that last season, we’d have given up 33 sacks and had 16-19 picks by now. We’re anything but perfect this season, but we’re much improved over last year. Complements to the coaching staff since much of the roster is the same.

Well, after watching last year’s games where Moore went out with a concussion and Clausen either folded under pressure and was sacked or threw the ball out of bounds, I’d say Cam’s handling the blitz fine. Like ALAC said, 2 sacks were Cam going out of bounds at the LOS… and he’s not nearly the interception machine Delhomme was or Clausen turned out to be.

^This

To control Newton, you have to chase him the entire game AND make sure he can’t complete passes on the run. A daunting task for any defense, and that is why the Panthers are the #2 ranked offense in the NFC. The only thing holding them back is that the other team scored more points than they did. My worry is that with the Saints coming to town, they have more incentive to win this game than possibly any of the previous four they played. If their defense brings it’s A-Game and can hold the Saints below 30 points – I think they might win. Only Jacksonville has managed this so far this year however, so it is unlikely. Final score NO 31 CAROLINA 27.

Justin needs to wipe out the eye buggars.....

This game will be very interesting. Greer vs Steve Smith is worth the admission price alone. Stopping Cam & the run game of Carolina will be the key. I still think GW blitzes should be better disguised and hopefully keeping Cam contained/rattled is top on GW’s list. Offensively we should be hitting on all cylinders. LB Beason is gone for the year which will hurt them in trying to stop our run and short dump off passes. Getting off to an early lead is an ok stratagey but Cam WILL try to put the team on his shoulders if need be. Cam is like J Freeman of TB but is MUCH better than Freeman as a rookie. Shockey is still a great TE being iffy brings back memories of him playing for us. I say if we stop their run game they’re still 2 dimensional with Cam’s ability to run with the ball BUT we should still win by more than 10 pts.

rotoworld.com:

Saints coach Sean Payton announced Wednesday that Marques Colston (collarbone) is “fully healthy,” and his role will increase going forward.
“His role was limited last week but you will see his role increase,” said Payton. “He is fully healthy.” Colston was limited to 20-of-81 offensive snaps in Week 4 (24.7 percent), but he’s going to be a full-time player this week after the Saints didn’t even put Colston on the Week 5 injury report. The Saints face the Panthers this week. Colston is probably now the best bet for production in New Orleans’ wide receiver corps. Oct 5 – 3:25 PM

I don’t think the Panthers defense will be able to stop the Saints. I’m just curious whether or not GW can come up with game plan to shut the Panthers down on that side of the ball, or is this another hold-on-for-dear-life-hold-them-to-FGs-and-get-a-few-turnovers affair that is one day going to kill either my heart or my liver.

GW will stop them in the 4th Qtr, when it counts.

It seems to me that GW has a more aggressive defense in the 4th quarter when the game is on the line. I think he purposely waits until the 4th quarter to show his aggressive defense so that the opposing offense has no time to adjust. Just saying.

Obviously with rookie QBs the natural tendancy is to try to apply pressure to the QB to force mistakes. However, YTD Cam has been significantly more productive against defensive packages bringing blitzes then against standard defences. And, dare I suggest, that a number of the blitz packages he has faced (ie Chicago / Green Bay) are as good if not better then what the Saints can offer. So my prediction is that Greg Williams tones downs the blitzing packages this weekend, rushing 4 a good number of times, forcing the rookie to try to pass into coverage.

by hrp on Oct 6, 2011 11:28 AM CDT reply actions

Chicago is not really a blitz team, they depend on their front 4 for a rush.

What city does Carolina play in? What’s the weather for this Sunday? Hopefully strong breeze blowing out the panters.

Ship, you are misinterpreting. I never suggested they did. I am saying that Cam did well against the blitz when he was blitzed in each game, even though he was blitzed in different quantities in each game. Chicago did blitz him during that game.

Only six NFL quarterbacks have attempted 25 or more passes when a DB is blitzing: Newton, Eli, Vick, Romo, Bradford and Cutler. Newton owns both the highest completion rate (68 percent) among those quarterbacks in that situation and the highest NFL passer rating (137.5) as well.

by hrp on Oct 6, 2011 1:08 PM CDT up reply actions

Here's some more on that, including LBs.
Through four games, Newton has not thrown an interception when a defense has sent five or more pass rushers, according to ESPN Stats & Information. In those situations, he’s completed 28 of 47 passes (59.6 percent) for 407 yards and one touchdown. Newton’s been sacked six times when opponents blitz.

i agree...

until the 4th quarter. Then he blitzes and goes for the pick.

Cam's not in college anymore!

Putting a team on your back and carrying them to victory doesn’t work too well in the NFL! Not to discount Cam’s God given talent, but this is a whole new level, and the Panther’s record shows this to be true! Shockey may not play so his knowledge of the Saints may not be useful if he’s not on the field and if he is he’s not familiar with some of our new linebackers. I think the Panther’s homefield advantage is a key we are overlooking. In a divisional game, the crowd will be even louder. Our offense will keep them guessing because Brees doesn’t have a favorite weapon. If we contain Steve Smith and disguise our blitz packages well we can keep Cam’s numbers low. Personally I’d use a QB spy package with one of our faster LBs. I think Cameron Jordan could even hunt down Newton if he makes a run for it. The Panther’s don’t have the defense to stop our run or passing games, but this is one of those games we can’t overlook the obvious like beating ourself!

by thukel on Oct 6, 2011 11:50 AM CDT reply actions

It’s not that Cam’s able to put the team on his shoulders and drag them into a win… it’s that he refuses to accept that he can’t win every game. Whether he wins or not, he expects to win. That attitude is beginning to work in the locker room. Panthers are tired of losing like they did last season.

Panther fan here.........

I think this should be a good game to watch. I’d certainly give the edge to the Saints here, but I think we can keep the game interesting till the end. My biggest worry(s) with your team (aside from Brees of course) is Darren Sproles and Jimmy Graham. We’ve been awful against the run. So far, we’ve managed to make EVERY RB we’ve faced look like a world beater. We’ve gotten better up front, but we keep giving up 2-3 HUGE runs per game. The TE position has also been a thorn in our side. Again, we’ll contain it for awhile but then give up a couple of game changers due to busted coverage on the TE. Hopefully we can shore up these deficiencies. I just doubt it’s going to happen in a week. Between these two glaring issues, and the Saints ability to spread the ball around, I’d have to give you guys the edge this week.

The Panthers best chance to win/compete in this game is to get the running game established. The stat sheet shows that we haven’t been very good running this season, but it’s not the complete truth. D-Will had been quiet up until last week, but then had a decent game (82 yards on 10 carries). Stewart had a 100 yard receiving game against the Packers and has been our best rusher with 4.6 yards per carry. The problem has been that we just haven’t tried to run the ball enough, especially when we have the lead.

Between Smith, Olsen, D-Will, J-Stew, LaFell, and Cam, we’ve got some pretty awesome weapons on offense. Our problem here has been the number of targets to a wide open Legadu Naanee that have been dropped. I’m hoping LaFell is our #2 this week. I also hope we can get DeAngleo and Stewart 15-20 carries each.

Charles Johnson and Greg Hardy have been very solid rushing the passer this season. The injuries to Beason and Davis are sickening, but we haven’t dropped off in production as much as one might expect. Our deficiencies on defense have been at defensive tackle and safety. Whether it be youth (two 3rd round rookies playing DT) or blown coverages (I’m talking to you Pugh!), we’re killing ourselves in these areas.

I’m looking forward to watching this game because I think it’s going to be a good one.

May the best team win and may both teams emerge injury free!!! Cheers and good luck to you!

Looking forward to this game

Hope we improve on run coverage. I am interested to see how Cam does since everyone seems to be singing his praises and I have not been able to see him play yet. Will be interesting for sure.

Going to be a close one as usual....

Steve Smith and DeAngelo Williams always plays good against us, add Cam to that, and the game might be even more close. Our defense needs stay in their lanes and don’t break containment. Hope Chase Daniels got em ready. I was glad when Vick left so we didn’t have to worry about a scrambling Qb…then here comes Cam. Hopefully we get a couple of turnovers and dont give them any. WE TAKE THE SHOW ON ROAD….

If we don't shore up the middle of our defense........

Your backs might rush for 150 a piece. If we can keep you under 150 yards rushing, we might have a shot!!!

While I certainly don't want to lose the game.....

I could live with Kasay kicking the winner. He’s a stand up guy and we wish he were still with us. Despite the uniform, he’ll always be a Panther.
