Ask a Giants fan

Hello Saints fans. My name's Will, and I'm the unofficial representative of BBV and Giants fans of the interwebz. Any questions, please feel free to ask them so me and other dudes from BBV can try and answer them.

Normally I have something to say about the last game or some witty quip but I'm too dejected and mad from the last game. So enjoy some random stats I found that have no bearing on the game on Monday.

Star-divide

The Giants are 14-11 vs the Saints, all time. Currently the Saints have a two came winning streak, stretching back to 2006. The Giants are 4-7 as the away team vs the Saints and 3-7 in Louisiana.

Drew Brees is 3-0 against the Giants (2-0 with the Saints, 1-0 with the Chargers), and has never scored less than 30 points vs the G-men.

Eli Manning is 1-2 vs the Saints.

Sean Payton is 2-0 vs the Giants as a head coach.

Tom Coughlin is 2-3 vs the Saints as a head coach (1-1 with the Jaguars, 1-2 with the Giants)

Hopefully the game will be worth the wait, and free of injuries

Hey hey hey...

Here are a few that I was mulling over:

1.) Heard quite a few rumors of Steve Smith heading back to the Giants after his one year deal with the Eagles is over. Personally I don’t see that happening as you seem to have very good depth at WR and Smith really hasn’t shown anything as of yet.
2.) Rushing game. Must be maddening for you to watch. Bradshaw banged up, Jacobs talking the talk but not showing up on the field. What is your opinion? Cut/trade and restart after this season or are you happy with your backfield?
3.) The Manning face. Ever get tired of it?
4.) Do you think Coughlin has lost the team? Heard a few fans rallying around that idea lately. Thoughts?

1) I have his jersey (which ironically enough I got before the 09 Saints/Giants game so I’m biased and wouldn’t mind having him back.
However, I don’t think there’s a place for him anymore. He’s not explosive, while Cruz is. It’s possible we may loose Manningham to free agency next year, so then maybe there’d be room, but it’s more likely Barden will just have to step up.

2) You don’t know the half of it. There’s been some debate, but I think most of us believe Jacobs is running hard, just that the O-line is making absolutely no holes. Bradshaw had problems running behind the line too so that’s what I think the biggest problem is. I like Jacobs in theory, the bruising back who runs people over, but how much does he really do that is the question. Also, he can have big cases of stone hands, which doesn’t fit our more pass dominant offense.

3) I’ve never understood the fixation with it. Every quarterback looks funny when they’re mad after making a mistake.

4) Absolutely not. If you watch the locker room after the Patriots game this year, to say that Coughlin’s lost the team is ridiculous. (linky to that here)

Coughlin has been on and off

the Hot Seat so many times as the Giants HC his hemorrhoids have hemorrhoids.

Seriously though, it was real after the 2006 season. He went into 2007 with the mandate from ownership that he needed to soften his authoritarian style some as well as he had to fire the OC at the time, John Hufnagel. Giants ownership gave him a one year deal to prove he was still the man for the job and he, and the team, responded.

All the other times he has “lost the team” or been on the hot seat has been a media creation. And that’s why we see these polls that players always vote TC the least likely coach they would want to play for. because that is what the media tells them.

But if the teams fades down the stretch again this year, or worse they collapse, than TC is most likely gone. He is currently working on that one year contract extension, just like in 2007.

IMO Jacobs looks clumsy. He was not real clumsy in the past even though he didn't have Barry Sanders-type

of agility by any means. But, now he seems clumsy- like he gets bumped and loses his balance and is on his way down in a much easier manner than a guy his size should be,

I worked with a guy in St. Gabriel, LA

that said he helped coach Jacobs in high school. He said that they had to put him in “special” classes in order to keep his grades up so that he could stay on the football team. The only reason I’m bringing this up is because I really don’t care for Jacobs because of some things he has said about the Saints.

I wish

It has the potential to possibly be, but a combination of injuries and bad coaching strategy has negated that. Seriously, we’ve had 4 or 5 corners put on the IR this year alone, not including the 9 weeks Prince has missed. Ross has played admirably, but it’s seriously hampered the initial strategies.

In other key places, we’ve become healthier though like the D-line. Tuck probably won’t be 100% this season, but Osi and JPP are.

Someone else will probably rant on the defensive strategy, but we’ve made scrub qbs look awesome and Tom Brady look like a scrub quarterback.
And we do way too many 3 man rushes with JPP playing nose tackle. It started off as a good idea in spots, but now it’s become way too over used.

I freely admit this and our next game are the two that worry me most. Your defensive front is intense, and as anyone around here can tell you….our tackles are a bit on the bad side. I’m expecting a lot of 3 step drops and use of our backs and TEs to hopefully expose your rookie linebackers. I have a feeling all it will take to figure out who won the game….is to look at the sack/QB hit stat the next day.

after what we saw Sunday

i’m not sure we could get past XFL tackles right now. Tuck is playing hurt, and thus ineffective, JPP is not getting as much pressure as before, maybe because he’s sharing snaps with Osi, and maybe because he lines up at DT on 3rd and longs, and just generally the last 2 weeks have been bad for our line. add to that that Brees is deadly with 3 step drops, slants and whatnot, and i’m anticipating a long Monday night for us.

lets just hope Boley plays…the less rooks against your QB, the better.

The Dline is awesome.

Can you, or anyone else, give me a quick scouting report of your Oline?

I always ask the opponents fans this question because this is where I believe a team wins or loses the game. When a teams Oline sucks, things are REALLY bad. The only time things are worse is when your QB sucks, IMO.

And you may like to know that your boys will be facing the worse Giants offense line since 2004. We are not good there. At all.

BTW, to your point about looking at the QB sack/hit stat to see who the winner will be: Sacks is the second best statistical predictor of who wins the game. 75% of the time the team that gets more sacks wins the game.

I bet you can figure out which stat predicts a win 83% of the time.

points scored?

just kidding – turnovers, I bet

our o-line is ok

We have beasts at the guard position (Jahri Evans and Carl Nicks), a decent center (Brian de la Puente) who’s in his first real extended playing time situation in the league, and suspect tackles (Jermon Bushrod and Zach Strief) who have played well at times. I’m hoping they all put it together for this game, but there’s a chance they will stink up the joint – consistency’s not been a strength of theirs.

They have given up 19 sacks this season, which is way too many for my liking, but not terrible in the league rankings. At times they have been absolutely terrible at run blocking.

I’m sure others will chime in as well to correct or add to my assessment…

Eli currently has 70 career wins under his belt, including the post season.
Archie finished his career with 35 wins, including the post season.

Archie played in 17 more games.

I personally don’t like any of the Mannings. That said, I don’t care how bad the Saints teams of the 1970s were. There is absolutely NOTHING to suggest that Archie was a better professional QB than Eli, outside of pure homerism.

I've seen all three play.

Daddy had a better arm than either of the kids, but took longer to develop some “touch.” He took a horrible pounding during his years with the Saints, and the arm injury finally did him in.

I also got to see him play against Alabama and Arkansas for a just slightly deficient Ole Miss team, and he was lights out in those games.

It is extremely difficult to compare players across generations, or even worse across different teams. But the old man definitely had some cred.

by Ship on Dec 2, 2011 1:55 PM CST up reply actions

Please, Louise. He was mediocre at best as a pro QB. I witnessed the vast majority of his career. Bobby Douglass, Bobby Scott and Archie’s supporting cast managed to win 4 games without him in 1976. Archie failed to match or exceed that staggering total in 10 other seasons as a pro.

by Ship on Dec 2, 2011 4:39 PM CST up reply actions

the Saints really did suck that bad up and down the roster.

Generally speaking, I agree with you. Manning was very much a part of that roster, though. Based on his statistics, one could easily make the argument that he weighed down the team just as much as the team weighed him down. That his most successful years were only successful because of the talent on offense around him. Chuck Muncie went to two Pro Bowls without Archie Manning. Wes Chandler went to three without him. Manning didn’t go to any without those two.

You can toga party, but you can't toga fish.

Opposing teams D used to help Archie off the turf and apologize for having to have to knock him down. It’s amazing his career was as long as it was, and a testament to his toughness. He only had one receiver you could say was decent during most of his career with the Saints. Since you are such a fan of stats, top five receiver with TDs for Archie:

Henry Childs – 20

Wes Chandler – 13

Ike Harris – 12

Danny Abramowicz – 10

Dave Parks – 8

You didn’t witness that his entire career. How would you know what opposing players were saying to him? The only reason you know this is because Jack Youngblood stated that he personally apologized to Manning numerous times throughout their careers as NFC West rivals. Youngblood entered the league in 1971, the same year Manning did. He also played against him in the SEC for four seasons at Florida. This is the source of his respect for Manning; as a collegiate legend. That would be like Rolando McClain apologizing to Tim Tebow today. Or Haloti Ngata apologizing to Reggie Bush, if those two happened to play in the same division in the pros. It’s more sympathy for a familiar opponent and possible friend, than it a testament to greatness at the next level.

1. Can you teach our FO/coaching staff how to select a quality pass rusher in the draft? We kinda need help there and y’all seem to do a good job with it.

2. How do y’all do in pass coverage against RBs and TEs?

3. Do you think Cruz will become consistent or is he going to be in the running for the lead league in dropped passes?

4. How good does it feel to see the “dream team” fail (still can’t believe y’all played so flat against them Sunday night)?

by BlackandGold4ever on Nov 22, 2011 3:20 PM CST reply actions

1 - Giant front office loves drafting DE's

2 – Not too well. Covering the TE and the pass catching RBs has been a problem for years. Rookie LB Jacquian Williams has been decent doing it. If Boley is a no go Monday, that will not help. And safety Deon Grant is very up and down in coverage (mostly down). Graham and Sproles could have huge games.
3 – Cruz is in his first full year playing, he will make his share of mistakes. At the moment he is on pace to finish with 1,280 yards and 10 TDs. He has the potential to be a consistent treat but right now is having his “rookie” moments.
4 – I always love when the winner of the “Offseason Super Bowl” falls on their faces when the games are actually played (Cowboys, Redskins, etc) and I have hated the Eagles the most since my college days. Sucks the Giants looked like crap against them on Sunday night.

If Cruz was in our lineup, our depth chart at WR would probably look like this:

Colston
Cruz
Moore
Meachem
Henderson
Arrington
Roby

is moore still above meachem on the depth?

i haven’t seen his name called too much on highlights…figured he was injured. Meachem is balling out for you this year right? do you think your receivers are a product of Brees being so good, or do you think they’d be this good regardless of who was slinging that thing?

Moore is our slot receiver, so he’s basically stuck at number 3. I feel like Cruz would bump Meachem down the depth chart, which would then slot him at 4.

I think it’s a bit of both. We’ve seen Brees fit balls into tight spots(TWSS), but we’ve also seen our receivers make grabs off errant throws, and turn those into big gains. I think overall, it’s just a great system, and with Drew basically being a coach on the field within it, everyone usually clicks

yeah i love Shockey

one of the last in NY who does.

Outside of last week, Ballard’s been great for us. not a physical specimen like Graham, but lumber’s into open spots down field and catches whatever’s thrown his way(USUALLY) but he’s outperformed Boss up to this point of the season. and Bosses role here was so exaggerated by the media its not funny. he caught 35-45 balls a year, and blocked decent. he was no Shockey in his prime, and injuries are gonna shorten his career dramatically. in Oakland, he’s already been injured twice and is now a backup i believe.

Cruz plays the slot for us, so I dunno bout the depth chart thing, but you would know better than me.

And I have always had the belief that Drew, like Eli, makes WR’s better. And that starts in the classroom and on the practice field.

BTW, Graham looks like the best TE in the league. I saw a Saints game in the preseason and I was Like WHOA, that boy is gonna tear it up! Especially with a QB like Drew,

believe it or not we'll try to run the ball

regardless of how effective or ineffective we are running, we never fully go away from it, unless we are down many scores. so expect to see plenty of jacobs(or hopefully some bradshaw as well) and some of our super speedy rook, Da’rel Scott. look for long pass plays of 20+ yards. Eli’s been a down the field passer alot this season, and he’s got the weapons to do it.

on D, i’d expect alot of short zones to cover the 3 step drop stuff that Brees is so good doing. hopefully our DC Fewell will dial up some more blitzes, but knowing him….prolly not. look for alot of nickel D, even in base settings, especially if Boley’s hurt. you’ll see our backup safety deon grant lined up alot at LB, along with (i’m assuming) Herzlich and Kiwi.

Atlanta completely stopped Sproles they sold out everything to cover him but that left our TE Graham either wide open or 1 on 1 most the game which is a mis-match Sean Payton will except and exploit all game long

don't know

on straight runs i’d just expect 7 man fronts, but if he goes out on routes, i’m thinking maybe our backup safety Grant(who’ll line up at LB alot) will cover him, along with Rolle. Maybe they’ll put in our rookie will backer Jaquain Williams in there at times to deal with him – he’s fast as hell. not Sproles fast, but fast enough to pursue and tackle Mike Vick fast.

since we pretty much know alot about each other’s teams already. you’ll see 1-4 Eagles or cowboys fans on the blog at any point during the day. so it’s a moot point there.

we have a better rivalry with BGN than BtB, since our rivalry is more intense, there’s more interaction b/t us. sometimes it’s fun, sometimes it gets real.

Us and them have a very passive aggressive relationship. People come over and go there so often I don’t see the point of it, especially with the NFC East off topic thread.

For me, I get along with about 50% of the BGN fans I converse with, the other 50% are just about complete knuckleheads. And I mean they can be real homer douche bags with no room for another perspective.

Most BTB fans are cool. I think they have one of the best sites on SB Nation. Lots of great writing and content from the blogs writers.

Hogs Haven is quiet. Not much going on there from the writers or the fans. The week leading up to the Giants game, the first game of the season no less, there was not one Giants vs. Redskins story until the middle of the day the Friday before the game! Pathetic if you ask me.

lead by example type

He’s not the kind of guy that does a “stomp you out speech”. He goes out there and plays and in press conferences says all the right things.
And yes, when things go bad in a game… you see the ‘face’. But he seems to have a short memory when he makes mistakes. He’s at his best when the team needs to score late in the game, 2 minute drills, etc.

If being white and goofy were the keys to being revered, then.......

Ryan Leaf = HOF.

AM was “revered” for a couple of reasons. First, he was the first real home-grown football hero the Saints had—up until then it was Kilmer (and I think Cuozo), who were seen as afterthoughts from other teams. Unlike Kilmer, he had the ability to scramble, and make the occasional great play that could win a game. And he had a cannon for an arm. Let’s face it, Kilmer couldn’t overthrow a Linebacker by the time he came to the Saints.

in regards to the Eagles hatred

I share that also – but at least you can take heart that your defeat of the Eagles earlier in the year (especially being in Phila) had much to do with their spiral downwards and (eventual) playoff elimination. The timing of that game heavily contributed to their 6 losses on record so far. It was the source of way more misery in Phila than the Giants loss caused in NY.

Chad Jones, Safety, 3rd round pick by the Giants in 2010 and former LSU champ in both football and baseball,

will be on the sideline with his Giants teammates for the first time this Monday night in Thunderdome.

His recovery from the horrific leg injury suffered in a car accident in June of 2010 is already miraculous, and it is now realistic that he will play football, probably next season, for the New York Football Giants.

This will not be the first time the Giants have supported a player through a catostrophic injury. Richie Suebert, drafted in 2001, won the RG job and played there all of 2002. In Oct of 2003 he had his leg virtually shattered, breaking his tibia, fibula, and ankle. Not until 2005 did he see the field again and only as a sub for injured players.

He earned the starting LG spot for 2007 and played there until breaking his kneecap in the final game of the 2010 season. He was released by the Giants this offseason.

Yeah, and actually, he was undrafted.

the story is how the Giants stuck with him for 2 years, paying him, and gave him a chance when he came back. Same thing is happening right now with Chad.

NJ.com has a good article from yesterday on where Chad is now with his rehab.

Accurate assessment HD

Too many fans, IMO, are ready to jump all over the negative with Eli. I suspect many of them are young and are not able to view the current Coughlin / Eli era through the prism of history.

I think Eli will get his due when he retires

just like Phil Simms. It’s rather unfortunate that fans don’t appreciate greatness until it’s gone. He will be missed when he’s gone that I can promise you.

That video

was actually stopped before everyone came.

But no the intelligent non pseudojet fans don’t.

It was after the Miracle at the Meadowlands 2

and eventually that room was filled but the video conveniently leaves that out. I will admit though, it is pretty funny watching him look around confused lol.

No.

I think the 13 in his name stands for all of HIS lovechilds.

Maybe Grandmaster Wang and Stujo4 are lovechilds of his?

Happened during one of our passionate arguments. I was dominant.

Tired of the speeches and the way that the reasons keep changing just to make the words rhyme

Congrats dudes

Usually I say hopefully we’ll meet again in the playoffs but… Not feeling hopeful about that.

Good luck going on

thanks, Will

good luck to y’all, too. Hope you get it together and smack around the rest of your division foes – that title and a playoff spot is still to be had…

And thanks for coming over here and striking up such a good conversation with us last week. I appreciate that very much.

Thanks, bro

you’re only one game behind the Cowgirls… don’t give up hope.

Please wop up on GB for us as well as yourselves next week

Then of course trash the Cow girls as well, and then this game will fade from memory.
And thanks for the Congrats as well. I will say your fans have been excellent visitors, and we have had some really bad ones before. Sorry I didn’t get my waiting period done in time to comment at your site. With the holidays I didn’t get on-line as much as usual. Good Luck going forward!
